JHZ Dec 06, 2012 - 03:21 | Sounds to me as if you are discussing two different kinds of overconsumption here. DrLex seems to talk about collective overconsumption, i.e. not enough earth for all these people to live on, so collectively human kind overconsumes the resources offered by the planet. The others here seem to talk about overconsumption by an individual. DrLex wrote: Overconsumption is just a consequence of overpopulation. Above a certain population density, it becomes impossible to survive without overconsuming.... cShaggy wrote: |

Perhaps, but I would guess that the more than 900 million people who suffer from chronic malnutrition may feel that overpopulation has more grave consequences than over-consumption. I understand the connections you are making, but it is possible to survive in a densely-populated area without over-consuming. ^^ ..DrLex is incorrect..population density doesn't correspond to over-consumption..our personal proclivities & desires for self-satisfaction do.. ..it's possible to be population-dense & still consume with consideration..it's just that we opt not to consider things..consuming is so much easier.. ..while a population center hasn't yet been proven to be consuming-neutral, it's mostly because people haven't TRIED..if we can send a man to the moon & robots to map Mars, i'm pretty sure we can handle population centers responsibly..it's just in the DOING of it..why not?.. ..apocalypse will change minds like DrLex, i'm sure..maybe this December (haha, jk).. |

I've been listening to George's "All things must pass" on the way to and from work each day in my car's cassette player. Absolutely uplifting and helps keep things in perspective for me. Each day, each moment can be refocused... Thanks George. |
