There is a huge difference between a sound/style/mode that a group goes for, and a specific melody. Melodies are not "derivative of everything else", as we hear repeated here on this board ad naseua - they exist apart from style, in their own sphere. They can be appropriated, and it is unethical to do so. There is nothing less interesting to me than "style", even though the thousands of bands that litter the musical wasteland go to market almost exclusively on style. It keeps the musicologists in business, that corporate teaching factory. My definition of a musicologist: someone who lacks the talent to write a good melody. Talent is the rarest thing in the world, when it comes to writing melodies. [ Reply ]
