I understand the point. I get their schtick. I just don't care for it. Pop culture can and usually does inspire artists to embellish a style or genre...I just don't think its particularly interesting. Just my unpopular opinion.

Wow. Two Dandys, two Sinneads, and two Son Volts in the same day. Or have I been listenting too long?

The Dandy's aren't bad, but why not play The Brian Jonestown Massacre instead? Way more talent.

Not sure about way more talent, but just as good. You speak the truth though...where is BJM on RP? Serious omission in my/our opinion.

Can these guys write anything other than three-chord infinitely-repeated songs?

I like this band and it has potential...especially if they try NOT stealing ideas and trying to make them theirs. How blatant is this to "Matchstick"...and the other tune sounding just like "My Sweet Lord"? Like I said...potential people...potential. Plagiarism isn't something to be too proud of.

You know, I am not one of those that has a problem with derivative because everything is derivative to a certain point at some level. However, the Warhols take it to need to hire a lawyer level all of the time and it just shows their lack of creativity and effort. Bah, bland band. Their old running mates the Brian Jonestown Massacre were not as pleasing to the ear maybe, but at least they were creative.

There is a huge difference between a sound/style/mode that a group goes for, and a specific melody. Melodies are not "derivative of everything else", as we hear repeated here on this board ad naseua - they exist apart from style, in their own sphere. They can be appropriated, and it is unethical to do so. There is nothing less interesting to me than "style", even though the thousands of bands that litter the musical wasteland go to market almost exclusively on style. It keeps the musicologists in business, that corporate teaching factory. My definition of a musicologist: someone who lacks the talent to write a good melody. Talent is the rarest thing in the world, when it comes to writing melodies.

Excellent read - tnx for the pointer.

Just read in Smithsonian an article by David Byrne that touched on a lot of parallels with this one. Good read, thanks!

Absolutely agree, they are entertaining but as a big music fan every time I hear a song of theirs I immediatley begin to hear the antecedents. Pictures of Matchstick men indeed...
