I think it is largely voltage that determines the efficiency of transmission.  The higher the voltage the more efficient the transmission. AC voltages unlike DC can be stepped up (for transmission) and down (for use) with transformers. Wind and water power turns turbines to produce AC.  Solar cells produce DC.  DC's efficiency comes from its being produced locally and not requiring much transmission.

Rotary generation can be either AC or DC (dynamos), but bigger ones are typically AC.  DC is great for putting power into batteries, and Solar to battery is really perfect for small localized loads like you typically have with a house. A solar array w/ a modestly sized battery pack can power a lot of homes if they are concientious about their use, and can offset the load for more normal households. These also have the benefit of having an ammount of stored energy that can be backfed into the grid during times of peak load. This lowers your cost, and also lowers the generation demands for the utility, it's a real win-win.

I thought the opposite was true. I seem to remember Edison said something about DC requiring 'boosters' every few miles, but Tesla's AC system could transmit much greater distances with less losses. I think it also has something to do with voltage: transmission lines run at high voltages because it reduces current, which in turn reduces losses over distance. But I seem to recall high-voltage DC has a whole 'nuther set of drawbacks. I'll have to research it and refresh the old memory banks. Good information for a nerd like me to know regardless...

Yep.  The main advantage of the AC distribution is that it can use ridiculously high voltages (750K+ Volts!) and low current. The power losses (I^2*R) are substantially less that any you would have with DC. AC has some other issues with Skin load, and some other annoyances, but is generally really good for long distance transmission.  It is also cheap and easy to transform into other voltages for various needs w/o rewiring anything. Straight DC would work really well for my industry, but considering the rest of the system load, and the amount of things that would have to be replaced or adapted, AC is really the way to go for distribution.
Edit:

A couple more words here - distributed generation with solar, wind, tidal, and home stations contributing to the grid is really good too. And the ability to use idle electric cars as storage capacity for peak loads has also been mentioned. All the generation points matter, but when it comes down to the baseline needs and our projected growth patterns, only large scale generation is going to cut it. And that really means nuclear power.  The safe/sane/smart way to do this is how the french do it - STANDARDIZE.  We custom built all of our electric plants and found they were costly and complex to maintain.  If we use one set of plans and replicate, we will get economies of scale in construction as we will in generation. Then a standardized grid to plug into, some improved battery technologies - or even other options for making it portable (wireless, capacitors, etc.) and we can really get back to using oil just make things slide easily.

I thought that line was funny when I heard it!  At least he can crack a harmless joke!

Reagan's been dead for some time now & everyone knows (since Nancy confessed) that the last couple of years in the White House, when his Alzheimer's had kicked in, that she consulted California horoscope readers for advice on how to run the country.

Maybe it's also time to consider making that grid a direct current grid. i read somewhere that a DC grid would be a more efficient way to distribute power nationally, with conversion to alternating current at the major end-points.

Al Gore group urges Obama to create U.S. power grid
It's about time! Everyone has been talking about more and more electric services, and more and more electric generation. But our grid is woefully inadequate for what we have now.  A nationalized standard system setup in a similar standard as our interstate roadway system will help a lot of growth on many fronts.
