Functionality is very very good. I like the ability to have multiple books in the unit when we take it on trips. Wife reads stuff, I read others, it's easy to tote one thing instead of multiple books. Also, the near instant download makes it easy to reload if you finish something and want more.
It's unexpectedly important that the screen isn't one of those backlit LED things, so you're looking at the page, instead of a light shining into your eyes. Feels different, especially over the long time if you're engrossed.
Put it into recovery mode and it shows as any other USB storage device on your computer. Drop PDFs into that storage device and presto: instant reader for other docs you may have at home!
So, four thumbs up from us, although it makes me sick that I paid retail for it and now the price has dropped...
I noticed how much nicer the screen is without a back light after a couple hours of reading. Also between books, records, CD's and movies I am out of storage space.
I had been interested in getting one for a while and then when they dropped the price to $189 I took the bait.

I did get the regular Kindle yesterday and my first impression is very good. It is a bit smaller than I expected but that is fine. Several reviews I had read said after a few minutes you really don't realize you are reading an electronic device and I have to agree with that. I had set up a free "Kindle for the computer" account about six months ago and had a number of public domain works like the Complete Mark Twain, the entire Robert Howard "Conan" collection, entire Jules Verne, entire Shakespear and a couple mystery novels that had been free promotional items. After powering it up and a few quick clicks the entire collection I had on my computer was available on the Kindle. The reading screen is actually more comfortable to my eyes than a normal book. The font size can be changed so I don't even have to use my reading glasses. Controls are very convenient. I did buy a copy of Girl with the Dragon Tattoo just a click and it was there. It is a 3G device and provides basic web surfing but I was so engrossed in reading last night I never even tried it. I did order a cover for it as it needs some protection if you are going to carry it around. All in all my initial thought is it was very much worth $189. If you are an avid reader I would recommend it.

I don't know much about it but from what I've heard, I doubt you'll be disappointed. I got Borders' free eReader iPhone app and they offer free ebooks every once in a while. I just downloaded 3, 1 of which, The Alchemyst, is the first in a series I've been wanting to check out.

With Amazon dropping the price of the standard Kindle to $189 I'm starting to give some thought to purchasing one.
Anyone here have one?
Let me know your thoughts both positive and negative. thanks.
