I know some of my friends and family are planning to vote for Mitt Romney. You will probably cite economics or foreign policy. However, I’d like you to look my daughter in the face and tell her, “I voted for the candidate that wants to limit your rights as an American.” Many of you have young children and some of them will be gay. I want you to imagine looking them in the face years from now and telling them, “I voted for a candidate in 2012 that didn’t believe you deserved full rights as an American under the protection of the law.” Some of you may want to quote Biblical scripture to me. Save it. The fact is, this country was founded on a separation of Church and State. Laws cannot and should not be made based on religious belief. As far as economics and foreign policy, I’ve never noticed much change from administration to administration. I believe, sadly, that America is going to keep believing it is our job to police the world no matter who is in office. But it is my job, both as a parent and a conscientious citizen, to stand up for the rights of all Americans. I will not support policies or representatives that deny my child equality ON ALL LEVELS! We have seen similar battles for equal rights throughout our nation’s history. I’d like to think that all my friends and family would have found themselves on the humane side of those battles. These fights are no different. I hope that you can find yourself on the side of humanity.
