Your rule book is apparently different from HST's... and mine. Go play in the Terry Shivo forum and try to see the grays between the blacks and whites.
You could start by reading the special edistion RS... It gives multiple perspectives on his life from people who knew him best. Most offered up stories of living life at 100mph and not one condemed him for his choice. Hell, he could have died casually any number of times... shooting at propane tanks, road trippin' while trippin'... This is a human who tested other humans and who would likely never imagine a god who would roll eyes, even if it could. |

It might be harder to live through another day but, numer one, it's his life and his choice and number two, as a self-professed agnostic, I don't think it was "chicken shit" at all. He owed no one nothing. |

Damn, man, that's awful.
It's something I hope to never have a close experience with, God willing.
Can't fathom what would drive a person to do it and can't imagine what it's like for the ones left behind.
As for Hunter, I like the theory someone offered up early in this thread that maybe a bat landed on his head and he simply missed. Coulda been multiple bats even, them damn bats. Treacherous.
Somehow I think HST might get a chuckle out of that theory, and I'll choose to cling to it. |

Thompson's send-off could fill skies
Writer wanted his ashes blasted out of a cannon
By Dan Elliott, Associated Press
Hunter S. Thompson, the "gonzo journalist" with a penchant for drugs, guns and flamethrower prose, might have one more salvo in store for everyone: Friends and relatives want to blast his ashes out of a cannon, just as he wished.
"If that's what he wanted, we'll see if we can pull it off," said Douglas Brinkley, a friend and now the family's spokesman.
Thompson, who committed suicide at his Aspen-area home Sunday at age 67, said several times he wanted an artillery send-off for his remains.
"There's no question, I'm sure that's what he would want," said Mike Cleverly, a longtime friend and neighbor. "Hunter truly loved that kind of thing."
Colorado fireworks impresario Marc Williams said it's doable. "Oh, sweet. I'd love to. I would so love to," said Williams, 44, owner of Night Musick Inc. in suburban Denver and a fan of Thompson's writing.
Williams said it's not uncommon for families to have their loved one's ashes scattered across the sky in a fireworks shell, though his company has never done it.
If the Thompson job was his, Williams said, he'd probably blast the ashes from a 12-inch-diameter mortar 800 feet into the sky. Then a second, window-rattling blast would scatter them amid a massive blossom of color about 600 feet across. "If you were going to light up a flash-bomb worthy of Hunter S. Thompson, you'd want to make it an earth-shaker," Williams said.
Thompson's wife, Anita, and son, Juan, are looking into the cannon scenario, said Brinkley, a Tulane University historian who has edited some of Thompson's work.
Brinkley also said Thompson did not take his life "in a moment of haste or anger or despondency" but probably planned his suicide well in advance because of his declining health. The author of books including Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was in pain from a host of physical problems that included a broken leg and a hip replacement.
"I think he made a conscious decision that he had an incredible run of 67 years, lived the way he wanted to, and wasn't going to suffer the indignities of old age," Brinkley said in a telephone interview from Aspen. "He was not going to let anybody dictate how he was going to die."
Thompson had spent an intimate weekend with his son, daughter-in-law Jennifer and young grandson William, the spokesman said.
"He was trying to really bond and be close to the family" before his suicide, Brinkley said. "This was not just an act of irrationality. It was a very preplanned act."
Family members had no hint that Thompson planned to take his own life, Brinkley said, and he did not leave a note. "There was no farewell salutation," he said.
Sales of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and other Thompson favorites have soared since his death. Fear and Loathing" was No. 15 on Amazon.com as of Wednesday and publisher Vintage Books has ordered a "significant" reprinting.
"We usually sell about 60,000 to 70,000 copies a year of that book and our next printing will be close to that total," Vintage spokesman Russell Perreault said. Other Thompson books selling well include Hell's Angels, Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail '72 and Hey Rube. |

I'm glad you caught the show, Daphne. We slept through it and will have to keep an eye out for a possible rebroadcast.
I don't think it's possible to truly understand the reason someone chooses suicide. I believe each person has his or her own reason why. John called it (and I realize he probably isn't the first to do so) a permanent solution to a temporary problem. The saddest thing to me is that so many times if someone has determined that it's the only solution for him or herself, it's too late for intervention because the deed is done before anyone realizes the thought is there. And then there are those of us who refuse to believe that the loved one would really go through with it because we cannot or will not see beyond ourselves. You know, similar to the "not my kid" line of thought. |
