dmax wrote:Whoops - sorry.
Pros: I didn't have to spend much to get it started. already had the popper. I'm a miser, so this appealed to me.
Cons: Doesn't get it as hot during roast as I think it needs to be, for the roast as dark as I'd like. Paradoxically, putting in more beans makes it more able to roast hotter, so it helps fix some of the light roast problems I ran into initially - but it's not what I expected/want. Still very drinkable, though! Enjoying a fresh cup this morning.
So, if you're starting from scratch, SweetMarias recommends the iRoast2 - which I'm about ready to buy. If you don't have the popcorn thing already, which I did, then that seems like the easiest and most successful approach for a beginner like me.
So, even though the iRoast is expensive - I'm not planning on stopping coffee drinking anytime soon and so it's a good long term investment.
To cut the cost of my fresh beans to about $5/lb - shipped directly from some folks who seem to be the RP of the coffe world - I think it's a fine way to go. Finally, I got an old corn-popper from my mother in law.
I burned the beans at the first try, but then it was ok. It's quite interesting, how much the taste could differ even with the same kind of beans. Now I'm searching for the perfect color.
It's fun.... |

I've officially gone fair trade and organic now.
I shop at local organic health food stores for most of my groceries. I went to Whole Foods for some supplies and needed coffee. I summoned the store coffee guru and put this poor guy through the paces, actually he loved it. I opened freshly filled bins with glee, stuck my face in there and smelled the beans and let myself go. I made funny noises, I snorted, I tasted and I loved it. I was in coffee heaven. People passing by were laughing and watching. I coulda cared less.
I purchased small amounts of individual beans from several different regions. I told myself that I would like a lighter roast, I'm not really sure why, maybe because I don't drink dark beer much anymore, I like the lighter stuff. So I thought this would apply to my coffee as well. I can now say that ain't true. I love some of the dark roasts.......
Coffee. I want to try it all. |

Working on an Organic Uganda Bugisu that I roasted last night. Less full bodied than an Ethiopian Harrar, but a pleasant abrasive edgy-ness to the flavor. The bag says "chocolate with hints of papaya." I don't get the papaya, but I think I might have roasted past its recommendation.
Pimping, again. |

there are several ways to get into "gold", an easy way is GLD, check the ticker.
also another good energy play in a MF is GAGEX. I want to get into silver first, because, if you need to pay for something with gold, it's hard to make change, because it's so expensive. But it also worries me that, in the past, the gubmint has outlawed private ownership of gold. Maybe some folks kept it anyway, but it's still a concern.
EDIT: This has been kind of a "threadjack" hasn't it?
