Still the best of the new shows. And it isn't just one thing. The acting is great. The photography is great. The music is outstanding. The stories don't feel contrived. Excellent.
I'm enjoying watching it with my high school boys - gives us a chance to talk about what they're going through without them realizing it.

Lee Wang @ PopMatters wrote: Friday Night Lights' greatest boon may be exactly what keeps people from watching it. The Peabody Award-winning drama mixes seemingly disparate genres and narrative modes, focusing on high school football while also providing small town melodrama. It also merges realism with idealism, the quotidian with the heroic. Much like fans of the Dillon Panthers, viewers are absorbed into the romance of ordinary people who play above themselves.
The realism starts with how and where Friday Night Lights is shot. Friday Night Lights's "documentary" style is effected by three cameras and little artificial lighting. Set and filmed in a small Texas town outside of Austin, the show often employs real-life residents as extras, providing local color in addition to an impossible-to-fake authenticity...( more)
While it is a decent article about an excellent show, I find the author's inability to choose where to place the apostrophe rather amusing. |

Hey edieraye and sunybuny (and fans of good, atmospheric storytelling everywhere), here's some great news:
NBC GOES THE WHOLE NINE YARDS IN GIVING CRITICALLY HAILED 'FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS' A FULL-SEASON ORDER OF EPISODES FOR 2006-07
BURBANK November 13, 2006 NBC has given a full-season order for 2006-07 to its critically hailed freshman drama "Friday Night Lights" (Tuesdays, 8-9 p.m. ET), it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.
"We're proud to reward an authentic, poignant series like 'Friday Night Lights' with a full-season order, demonstrating our confidence in it's appeal and quality," said Reilly. "Television critics and devoted fans have supported the show with well-deserved praise for the executive producers, writers and exceptionally talented cast."
This show gets better every week. Every character and situation is achingly believable and I haven't found a false note yet. People seem to think dramas about sports are too predictable and that they won't like them. This one really breaks the mold and pulls you in if you give it half a chance. |

- beautifully framed shots, gorgeous use of depth of field
- all of the little touches that the show gets right (It is these little touches that push me over the edge - I think I've kept it together and then one little detail will start me bawling.)
- well-rounded, flawed yet lovable characters
- lack of obvious villians
- I'm not sure exactly how to express this but the show, while acknowledging the small town touches, does so with a certain amount of respect that I find a refreshing contrast to the knowing sarcasm found on so many TV shows these days.
I think that everyone would enjoy it. And if you live in Texas, have ever lived in Texas, have ever wondered what it would be like to live in Texas, you'll find it that much more compelling.
The show isn't doing well in the ratings - please check it out before it is too late. And once you've fallen in love, tell all your friends about it!
Well, I tend to prefer Pennsylvania football . . .
I have seen the show, and I do like the way it brings forth its drama, humor, and overall human components in an understated manner that is relatively absent in many shows today. Unfortunately, that's also probably why it isn't doing as well. |

Oooh! Good call. I set many of the new series to record the first couple of episodes to see if we were interested. Some of them we watched the first episode, some the first 10 minutes. And Friday Night Lights we didn't watch at all. I was fixin' to delete everything we weren't hooked on. And then I read the article in Slate and that convinced me to give FNL a chance. I was thrilled to realize that I still had the first two episodes on the DVR. I think my favorite scene so far is the one with the pee wee football team. It was exquisite. Although, really, I already have several favorite scenes. The hand held camera seemed too gimmicky to me at first but it is growing on me. And the photography really is awe-inspiring. The colors, the DOF, they aren't afraid to crop a shot too close. Beautiful.
Anybody know where to find a list of music used in each episode? Lots of unexpected indie bands. |
