THANKS MUCH for the insights my peeps! I am going to keep this up for a month or so and if I just feel to uncomfortable with it, I'll try something else... I am also going to get on my bike more and do some resistance training at home. I just cannot afford the gym right now.... Seattle has some great places to bike and walk. I dance alot with my 2 year old niece.. The Mediterranean diet looks interesting.. and I have heard of burning fat like Suzanne Somers suggests, but in a different book.. Interesting stuff. xo |

Nowadays you can replace the starchy pasta and rice with organic whole grain pasta and brown rice. Okay, so it's not exactly the same. And I have had some pretty bad stuff (stay away from Ezekial 4:9 pasta ) But you can find viable substitutes so y ou don't feel deprived. Shop at Trader Joe's, if you have one nearby. They have precooked, frozen brown rice that micros in 3 minutes. |

Lots of great insight here - I had extremely high blood pressure and went on the "South Beach" diet - kind of like a diabetic diet. Lost cravings in a few days and a lot of weight. Then I got lazy and backslid. Now, it's back to the starting line for me.
What a great thing, though. I get to begin a journey and shape it. And if it does not work out all I have to blame is myself. A good opportunity for me to grow and use eating and exersise to become more balanced. |

Here's an odd-sounding suggestion... go to the library and get Suzanne Somers' "Eat Great Lose Weight". The premise of her diet is to keep your carbs and fat/proteins separate. Fruit is eaten by itself, and veggies can go with anything. (A bit of "Fit for Life" philosophy.)
She suggests that the enzymes that digest fats and proteins are different and in conflict with the enzymes that digest carbs. This really makes total sense. And was very much worth learning.
However, the diet is too difficult to keep up because it's too different from how everyone else in the world makes food.
But 2 huge benefits from her book:
1) She starts out having you throw away ALL processed foods and empty carbs and EVERYTHING with sugar in it. And we've kept some of those habits... no white flour, no white sugar, organic condiments, checking labels on sauces and salsa and such... Everyone could/should do this. No one benefits from all that added sugar.
2) Great recipes in the book. |

The exercise element is HUGE. I am empathetic to Justine's comment about being too tired to exercise, but I know that the moment I swing my leg over my bike or head into the gym, I'm glad that I did.
Don't know if you can get this in The Great White North, but Dreamfields is the *best* low carb pasta I've ever had. It's good enough to compare to real pasta.
I'm doing a modified Sonoma Diet, which is more of a Mediterranean-type diet, with greatly reduced sugars. But it does allow whole grains, breads and cereals in limited quantities. And after the first 10 days, you can have one glass of red wine with dinner.
But, as so many people have stated, exercise really is the key. I'm doing 30 minutes a day on my rowing machine (and walking 1/2 to 1 1/2 miles every weekday when I trek to my bus stop). And this is after getting up at 5:20am, working until 5:00pm, and usually not getting home until 6:15pm. First thing I do after giving my sweetie a kiss hello is change into shorts and a t-shirt and hop on the rowing machine, before I can talk myself out of it. With Stanley Cup playoffs in full swing, it's been great to put a game on the telly and row. I *completely* lose track of time (unless I have the bad fortune to start right before an intermission). I've just started, but I've already lost five pounds. |

I think limiting carbs can help but in the end you have to expend more energy than you consume. I'm into eating a well-rounded, healthy diet and exercising. It's slower but lasts longer. IMHO.
Yo-yo dieting actually makes your average weight go up. And it's hazardous to your health, I hear.
Apparently it's all about calories after all. The only difference is that outgoing calories are at least as important as outgoing calories. The healthy diet is just common sense whether you're dieting or not.
Of course if you have triple-digits to lose, it's a whole different ballgame. One that requires an MD's guidance. You don't want that exercise part to kill you!

I think a more normal diet is best. I have done Atkins, Sugar Busters, etc. The only diet that has really worked for me is Weight Watchers.
but that is just my results. I always check out my carb levels and try to keep them as low as possible while doing this diet. I miss apples and other fruit while on the low carb diet.
