Sounds very time consuming. Kudos to you all.

Sixteen people in an hour... needs to be a lot faster. Would have been more people but the lift had been stopping and starting so people said "meh, let's go to the other lift" and most chairs were empty. We were all very lucky to have such good weather and extra help.

Here's a photo from training a couple years ago. The woman on belay, Carol, is getting extra help because she's too light and we don't often have a convenient tree to tie ourselves to. She was my partner yesterday... worked out great.

We start by throwing a (weighted) bag of nylon cord over the cable, and using it then to haul a 10mm climbing rope back up and over the cable. If the cable is too high to throw over (as every occupied chair was yesterday), we use a line launch gun with a .22 that fires a big red rubber football. One patroller ties in with climbing harness while another uses the rope to haul a small seat up to the chair. The seat is a 3-foot bar that has a loop of rope at the top that the people drop around their waist and cinch up tight, then at the bottom is a small platform, about 6x10", that the person scootches under their butt. The belay person on the ground then heaves back a little, which lifts the skier off the disabled chair, then they tend to naturally swing forward and away. From there it's a simple belay down until they get to the snow, when the 2nd patroller catches them, orients them correctly on the mountain so they don't immediately start sliding down the hill, helps them out of the seat and up it goes to the next customer. Once that chair's empty, we can usually flip the rope downhill to the next chair without having to re-string the whole setup.

Something like this? (Says google) SFW, do they have to shoot cables up and over the main lines to attach them?

I guess we don't have a thread for "Photos other people haven't taken of you" but I wish some of the people who did take photos would start posting them and tagging the ski area on facebook... because yesterday we had a not-a-drill chairlift evacuation*. It went very well but that's mostly because we had 3x the number of patrollers on the hill for some previously-scheduled toboggan-handling training. If it had been Friday instead, there were only 4 patrollers, temps were 20° colder with a constant breeze... it would have been a bit more desperate.

*The lift had some electrical short somewhere that kept tripping a safety emergency stop. There wasn't any mechanical or safety problem but after any 15-minute stoppage we lock it down and start unloading... people don't like hanging up there for hours on end, for some reason.

I measured 14 inches in the morning and it snowed pretty much the rest of the day, so I'm not sure exactly. Definitely a boatload.
