That's sort of what I'm saying.  Killing yourself is suicide, just like killing someone else is murder. But we have different kinds of murder (one/two/manslaugher/involuntary manslaughter) based on the circumstance.

Maybe we need some extra kinds of words for suicide to denote the ones who explode themselves in a crowd of infidels vs. the ones who just want to make the news vs. the 56 pills and a bottle of wine.  I think they are all suicide, but I think the motivations, planning and outcomes are all pretty different.

The term "murder/suicide" is pretty commonly used.  Legally, 'homicide' is a general term for causing the death of another person, "murder" (which implies deliberately killing another person), "manslaughter", etc. are subcategories.

Again more construct to the words would help. 3rd degree murder (- murder where there is a circumstance that would cause a reasonable person to become emotionally disturbed) / Suicide?  Of course you could argue that he was emotionally disturbed initially and that caused the circumstance.

Either way he clearly had problems.  I just don't get the reasoning that he takes 149 people with him - but there it is: no reasoning.

Semantics, no? He killed himself. That is suicide. He killed other people. That is murder. So maybe it's a suicide murder then as he probably died first. Semantics.

You don't know the reasons this guy committed suicide. This is a murder suicide on a grand scale.

suicide bombers are ideological, no? They are referred to as comitting suicide... how is this different from referring to the 911 people as comitting suicide as well as being terrorists.

Good point. The word really isn't good enough to separate the act from the driving cause. We have degrees of murder, and an alternate word of manslaughter when murder doesn't quite fit. Suicide hasn't quite reached that level of refinement yet - yay?

Technically I guess. But I think the distinction is that it was more an act of war/terror driven by ideology, not simply a impulse desire to kill themselves.

And I thought this was the 3rd one, with the jury still out on Malaysia being in there as well (making 4). Still, consider that there are something like 90K flights a day globally the odds are pretty heavily in your favor.  It's getting a lot of airplay for the horrific end and high body count, but it's not really something to worry about.

as i started out...no disrespect was meant...obviously a huge tragedy for those directly involved.  It was just an observation that we all are very scared of death, fear death, yet no one really wants to talk about it...even when there is a big story like the recent crash.  We dont directly point out why we are so keen on covering these, in the grand scale of humanity, relatively minor events.  Meanwhile, how much coverage did a recent story like the one on the gas cloud passing the black hole at the center of the Milky Way get?  We are still very primal, instinctive creatures.
