I get to meet up with an old friend soon.  He's visiting the States.  It's been 24 years since my trip to Australia & New Zealand.  I guess Facebook can be a good thing! {#Music}

Reagan went on tv and made a big deal of declassifying some grainy photos of an airstrip being built by in Grenada by Cubans funded by the Russians. At least I think the Russians were funding it. Used it to justify invading and overthrowing the military government. Not like it was that they didn't know they were building an airport and the US had to keep it secret from them.

There was a good bit more than that going on.

A good friend of mine was in medical school on Granada right before the invasion. He told some harrowing stories; the president, Maurice Bishop (it was never really clear to me what his true title was; he had been prime minister) was under house arrest after a coup. There was sporadic fighting and chaos.

Bishop and much of his cabinet were later executed. There was some violence between factions supporting and opposing the coup. The government (such as it was) had been allied with Cuba since the 1976 revolution and the coup plotters were a Stalinist faction within a one-party state. There were Cuban military personnel on the island and they took part in resisting the invasion.

Whatever you think of the legality of the invasion it isn't like Granada had been a peaceful oasis untouched by other cold war powers up to then. Granada has had a democratic government ever since—that's over 30 years now. It was a heavy-handed operation but the country is better off.

Yeah, I just did the TL;DR. I hadn't realized or remembered until I refreshed my memory with Wiki that there had been a coup against a coup. Still, I think the supposed protection of the medical school (kind of dodgy sounding to me overseas degree, but what do I know?) probably was just an excuse since that was a good source of income. Then again I wasn't there and governments aren't always rational, eh?

The Trump-Russian thing got me thinking about other times the President has released classified information. On one hand I still believe that information is over-classified, often because it is easier for the spooks but also because knowledge is power and a way to protect your funding against other agencies. And because there are things governments make secret mainly to keep them from their own people. On the other hand, there are legitimate reasons not to Wiki-leak everything.

Remember when Reagan declassified air photos of the Soviets building an airstrip in Grenada to justify invading? Like it was such a serious situation that he had to reveal state secrets? Yeah, this is nothing like that.

There are no political parties. There is just humanism and the smaller circles within that are trying to give themselves fancy names, circlets trying to be bigger than that other circle that is also not the whole.
