A friend says because we became meat eaters, starting the leap in brain power and intelligence.  If this were so, why haven't the other large carnivores and omnivores on this planet kept pace?  It's possible I think too much.

Well 700 mL of shitty vodka will set you back about $35 here {#Arghhh}. You will get considerably different extraction with the higher proof. I have some makings for green walnut liqueur sitting in a cupboard that I really should finish up. I had to split it up because I couldn't get the rectified spirits at the time except from a little I had lying around. So I have some using 40% vodka, Wild Turkey 101, and the very high proof. The difference was remarkable and I basically ended up putting all of it away for 18 months to see what would happen. The 40% vodka was really insipid but maybe the time will help. I have heard that Everclear makes for a really harsh infusion.

A friend did some bitters using really vile high proof Chinese spirits that he got from the grocery in his somewhat dodgy neighbourhood. The bitters are fine and I figure a few drops of the stuff won't kill me but I wouldn't trust any larger volume.

Let me know how the experiments turn out.

But they say cheap vodka can be made to taste as good as good vodka if you run it thru a Brita filter a few times. I wouldn't know because I don't care, but a half a gallon of shitty vodka might cost $12. I'm not sure why he wants to use 50%ABV vodka either... a little better maceration? I could buy a pint of Everclear (190 proof) if it's that important. That stuff's cheap too.

Anyway, I think I'll keep an eye out for some fancy herbal shoppe when we're on vacation because I want to make my own Bay Rum after shave too.

I used Tanqueray  which tastes as much like a Christmas tree as anything I've tried. You can buy "essential oil" stills here that can be used to distill flavours into vodka. But a problem with infusion here is that you can't get 50% abv vodka. I think they are trying to save the bogans from themselves (even though you can get overproof rum and bourbon if you are willing to pay the tax premium. And you can get 95% rectified spirits. Go figure). Personally, I'm willing to leave the compounding to the experts since the tax structure means that vodka isn't much of a savings. That is unless I decide to try to import a real still from New Zealand where distilling is legal.

In any case it's a bit of problem getting juniper berries to make gin to replace the juniper berries I lost somewhere in the back of the pantry.{#Lol}

Honestly? Probably. If it's good gin.

In looking for what gin has the most aromatics in it, I ran across this article and I'll be doing this asap. I hate vodka, and most gin doesn't have enough oomph for me until you get to the expensive stuff.

And another extraordinarily geeky article with comments that outdo the article's geekiness by a factor of about infinity.

But I think a small investment in some botanicals can make average vodka into great gin. We'll see.
