An update on the recovery from our fire(s). We were out there a couple weeks ago, and it's kind of weird how things are coming back. Among the burnt-up sticks of trees, there is a carpet of green coming up. Mostly oaks, I think they're post oaks, but no matter. Apparently the roots are very fire-resistant, and they are sending out strong bunches of baby trees around the base of each burned-up tree trunk. The big issue right now is making sure the pines for which Bastrop is famous get a chance at recovery as well.

In Colorado, huge swaths of trees had already been destroyed by beetles. Entire mountainsides brown where they should be green and lush. The fire is merely finishing the job. Not to say it's not a terrible tragedy, of course it is: lives lost, homes destroyed, lives changed forever. Just like here. And just like here, the land will recover. It won't be pretty, or quick. But there will be green on those hills sooner than you would think.

Absolutely, and those beetles will continue to destroy our pine forests until they've all been replaced and probably past then, too. The only things that kill the beetles are fire and temps that drop below -30°F for a week or so. Or an unseasonally early or late hard freeze (September or May, 0°F-ish). Since it hasn't frozen that hard here for a couple of decades and likely won't again for a couple of millenia (give or take an eon), it's up to fire. Certainly worth re-thinking that chalet in the mountains. Unless you like meadows and stone buildings, I guess.

On that fire note...

Beware!
It's not very dry out there because of all the rain we had this season.
Lots of fuel to burn!

Of course, if we didn't have a wet year, it would be a bad fire season too!

Sarcasm intended.

Sure seems like it. We're used to hearing about fires south of the Bay Area, but it was another matter entirely when my subdivision came within a half-mile of getting wiped out last Sunday afternoon here in (North) Auburn.
