This isn't my first eclipse. I've seen the shadow part with the naked eye, I've seen it through pinholes, I've seen it in little half moons of dappled sunlight filtering through leaves of a tree....If it was THAT significant today, why couldn't we just see it FFS?

Not doing a good job of letting go, am I?

Yes, you should have seen some definition but you need to get the aperture small and a reasonable range for the focal length.

It would have appeared as the bottom due to the pinhole, but it was actually the top. Using a pinhole aperture on a camera is really tricky-  no matter the pixel count, it's really the size of the sensor that matters. iPads and phone cameras have tiny sensors. You would probably have been better off using the pinhole aperture to project on a sheet of white paper and taking a picture of that.

I used a pinhole aperture....still couldn't really tell. Which portion of the sun was occluded? There was a moment when it looked like the bottom left (7 o clock), but I think it was my imagination.

I guess I'm disappointed because we actually had fairly clear skies and the CHANCE to see it, but it didn't work somehow. You could be right about the glare...that is what one of my coworkers suspected. A member of the Science team across the office didn't speculate.

Top. Through a pinhole it would look like the bottom.

A pinhole aperture is best for viewing. We got a few glimpses in between the clouds, but then the rain came and drove us all back inside.

And OMSI said 3:03pm was peak viewing. Hmmm.
