I know all about this and have become an expert on it pretty much. When I bought the house it had been empty for years and was home to thousands of bats that I had to deal with. Took several months to get them all excluded as these Victorian homes have so many places they can make nests. I got bit dozens of times while working on the house. I had so many rabies shots and boosters they call me "Batman" at the ER. The ER is the only place in VA you can get them. And none of the docs or nurses knew anything about rabies. The first time I went in they didn't even have any vaccine in stock and had to wait 3 hours in the ER for a messenger to bring some from Richmond. Then they gave me the doses for the entire course the same night instead of over a month and had to stay 24 hours for observation. I've had so many rabies shots that when I was tested for a booster 3 years after the last one my level was so high I didn't need it. They said  because I had so many I may become immune to the shots.
The national average of rabies in bats is 1 to 3% but here in Damnville its as high as 11%. If you catch the bat the Health Dept will test it so if its neg you don't need the shot. I've only been able to catch the offending bats twice and one was pos and the other neg but they gave me the shots anyways because it took so long for the results. One time my cat Stinky caught one and it was pos also so he got boosters and quarantine for a month.
Only once did I actually see the bite. The bat had landed on my arm when I was sleeping and when I rolled over it bit me and flew off. I wasn't able to find the damn bat but there were 2 tiny holes about 1/8" apart on my arm and it was visible long enough for the ER doc to see it.
But you can still catch rabies from the spit from the bat when it makes its navigation noise if it gets into your eyes, mouth etc, Like if it flies over you. A child died this way right here in town 3 years ago.

In fact, even waking up in a house with a bat means you needs shots.
You don't need to see or feel a bite; it can be very small and undetected.

It did hit her and probably didn't bite but you can still catch rabies from their spit if it gets into a mucus membrane like your eyes, mouth etc. And this bat was most definitely acting sick. Bats avoid lights and humans and this one was doing neither. It was also flopping around on the floor. Looked everywhere. In the toilet. behind it and even in the tank as high tank toilets don't have lids on the tank. Even looked in the light fixtures. In the 30 secs it took me to find a box and a towel it was gone. It may have got out under the door as there is about an inch gap under it.
Both cats were upstairs the whole time so they weren't exposed. I looked for it until 2 am before giving up. I think it went down the floor register for the HVAC as Squeaky stood in front of it for hours. I closed all the floor registers before going to bed in case it was down there.

I'm just hoping this doesn't become a "They're in the house" type thing.

Because then, they would have to leave.
