Apparently rumors of Yahoo's death have long been premature but really, they need to die. We were just laughing in the office about this front page news:

Prep cheerleader laughs at own misfortune after epic cheer FAIL

And if you think that's pathetic, see how the actual article fails to even live up to that level of uselessness.

And then, finally, watch the video (4 sec) and see how the actual event makes the article seem like Hemingway, and proves the headline's so wrong, criminal charges should be filed.

NYT:
Breaking News 7:54 PM ET: Microsoft Says It Is Abandoning Bid to Buy Yahoo

(no details yet)

This could mean two things: 1) Microsoft might probably seek another target; 2) Yahoo! might not be off the hook yet from others as a potential takeover target.

EDIT: news.yahoo.com has this blurb from AP:

BREAKING NEWS: Microsoft spokesman says it is walking away from its offer to buy out Yahoo (AP)

Yeah, MS hasn't done too well with their online ventures.

But like you said, as long as whoever takes over Yahoo! leaves Flickr alone (which I think they would), then it would be OK. It was the same reaction people had when Yahoo! bought Flickr, remember?

EDIT: Google could another possible suitor, but that won't happen; monopoly and all that. BUT, I read about Google possibly stepping in a working out an ad-sharing deal with Yahoo! That would be the best possible bet for Yahoo!.

Best end result for me would be for yahoo to get split up and google get flickr. Not anyones monopoly, but google is far better than yahoo or microcrap.

Yes, I am sure Yahoo! will be acquired. But it will take a while.

When the news broke a while back I was reading through some forum threads on Flickr; lots of people there are ready to jump ship if Microsoft takes over Yahoo! The logic is that MS fubars everything it gets its mitts on.

And I guess I can understand that. If and when the time comes, I may indeed switch to another service. Fingers crossed that whoever takes over Yahoo; will leave Flickr alone.

It was in the business pages in our paper.

I wouldn't worry about learning a new site yet. The new management might leave Flickr well enough alone. We can only hope!

Yahoo! is hemorrhaging money; Microsoft put in a takeover bid about 10 days ago or so.

Someone's going to take over the company. Might be MS, might be News Corp, as Abhi said.

As for the ramifications of this, I only have conjecture right now.

Don't be so sure yet...

Yahoo! is definitely going to be acquired. I would bet my money on Microsoft, but another possible contender that Yahoo! approached is News Corp. The question is, whom would you prefer: Microsoft, which is known to have very liberal social policies, or News Corp which, well, we all know about Murdoch. But he seems to have stayed off My Space.
