Actually I think in Texas they are more like guidelines than limits. Nobody pays attention to them anyway. I use the cruise out of pure laziness. Shoot, when they invent a car you just tell where you want to go and then enjoy the ride, I'm in.

Cruise control is really only good for, wait for it, cruising. At a steady speed.

Those were probably not a steal. If you got forty K out of factory tires without running them right down to the belts, you done good. I'm convinced that the factory tires—even though they will be a brand name and model—are substandard grade. Lucky if I get twenty-five K, replace them with more or less the same thing from the aftermarket, and get fifty out of those. I'm not shy about used tires in general, but I'd be leery of OEM stuff, unless the price is really, really a steal.
I figure breakeven point is about one year from now. If I make it into 2014 I'll have saved money over new. If not, well, I needed tires now.
And it's a well-established fact that I drive like an old lady so I do expect I'll get more wear out of a set of tires than most people.
Well I let these go, then had a tire-not-completely-round-on-all-sides episode and was foraging around again and found a set for $150. Plus $65 to mount them, I should be good for a couple of years with these now, for the price of one new tire. I have never noticed used tires in the paper before (the paper I've worked at for years and years ) but it seems now that they're in there pretty often. I guess I could get used to buying used tires, tho... so many guys get trucks and want knobbier tires but I want street tires, they should be out there whenever I need some. Maybe.
The real pisser is the last set of tires we got thru the paper as trade-out for advertising. I have been asking for that benefit for several months but they don't get around to it. They'll probably come in next week with some tires and give 'em to someone else because I got new tires now.

Anybody know what the used tire market is like? I'm close to needing some tires on the pickup and there's a guy selling a set of four for $200. They have "less than" 20,000 miles on them. They're the stock 4-ply street tires that come on pickups, he traded them out for some 10-ply mud & snows. I initially thought he said they were like new so I was really interested but now... not sure.
Goodyear Wrangler ST, retail about $200 each. I got around 40k miles out of the first set I had (the stock tires) so I figure maybe these are half used up. Figure in mount/balance at $50 it seems like a fair deal but not a steal. But if nobody can sell used tires for any amount of money then it's way too high, y'know?

It's not just the ticket, it's also the increased insurance premium.
