I think you're right that it's unrelated.  None of his targets seemed to be the usual ones for religious extremists.  It seems like he was more a of an extreme sociopath with little or no religious motivations.

Good point, but they tracked him by his purchases, and he was in his car at a motel (but he lives here). They were closing in on him when he detonated the bomb, so it's pretty clear he was the one.

It'll be interesting to see the timeline of this investigation, because when a package explodes in a FedEx, UPS, USPS (sometimes) facility, they know a LOT about it, even if the package is destroyed. Where it was sent from, and to. I heard they found one unexploded in another facility, probably by searching the first package's history. So I figured they'd have a line on the guy pretty quick. But it sounds like he was a "person of interest" already. Maybe for taggants in the explosives, etc. I don't know what he used, but probably some tannerite or something you can just buy.
