I just checked the wiki entry for Taco John's, and it says that Olés were originally (late '70s) cylindrical and filled with refried beans. I don't remember that.  They've been the little crowns/discs since at least the mid '80s.

This would have been mid 80's. I was driving at the time so that's the right window. I'm going to claim it as a tiny window of availability rather than simply faulty memory. I'm also now considering that maybe it wasn't them at all and this discussion now counts as prior art for my patented "Hot Tots" (yeah go ahead and google that one).

There was a brief window when they were still more tubular like real tots (before they became the little disks), where you could get them with a Durkee style center...

I'm sure I'm remembering this right, but google says no.  Maybe it was that little window in the early 90's when the internet didn't know about Wyoming?

Okay for the midwest/wyoming crowd, didn't Taco John's have a potato ole, that was really just tater tots with hot sauce inside?  I searched but all I find is the seasoning stuff.
