I passed a student in the hall a few minutes ago and he was carrying a fast food bag. The smell of fries was overpowering. I almost knocked him down for the bag.

But, I didn't. So I'm eating my leftover tilapia, and mixed veggies and rice. {#Grumpy}

Grocery stores here don't sell beer, wine, or liquor.

There is no 3.2 distinction.

A liquor store, retail only, must have a full license: Package, Bar, Restaurant. Restaurants can have a restaurant liquor license but a bar is also always a package liquor. If you only want to have a corner convenience store with a 6' cooler for beer, you still have to have the same license that allows you to carry liquor, serve drinks at a bar or restaurant. Makes no sense.

Our liquor stores essentially carry whatever the distributor brings in. It is impossible to excel in selection or price (prices are often set by the route driver!). The store we go to 98% of the time gets almost everything the distributor wants to bring in. There are no exclusives per se, but no other store in town takes the whole array. One or two stores in the next town do, so they sometimes have a little different selection, and one takes all the 22oz bombers, so I go there for odd stuff sometimes. Other stores take a more mundane selection, and gas stations get the bare minimum and on those strata, the stores are all identical. The driver knows "this is a 3-tier store" or whatever, and stocks the place with cheap beer, main-brand American stuff, plus the Bud-distributed micros like Widmer and Red Hook. All of them, all the same price, unless the manager is not a lazy idiot. The distributor wants maximum distribution so they seem to think price competition would be bad. I will never understand how such a right-wing state ever allowed this system to come to be.

The only reason I got some Dales Pale Ale one time ONE. TIME. was because the brewery gave a case to the distributor and they gave it to the liquor store and I paid for it. Despite me saying it was great and I bought it all, they never got it again because the distributor didn't ever stock it.

The only way to differentiate yourself as a store would be to really blow out the old stock and keep the stuff fresh and/or treat the stuff that "keeps," better. Haven't seen that, tho, so I just buy whatever's new, when I can.

One of these days we're taking a road trip that direction... we'll have to visit some outlets...

Here it's like this:

Liquor stores sell booze, strong beer ONLY (ABV greater than 3.2) and wine.

Grocery stores, convenience stores, etc. AND brewpubs sell 3.2 beer.

Bars & pubs can sell whatever.

Liquor stores are closed on Sundays and holidays, but bars are open. So, you can't go the liquor store on Sunday for a bottle of vodka, take it home and get tanked; but you CAN go to a bar, get tanked and DRIVE home. Brilliant.

Road trip? Bring it.

distribution is an issue here. basically one outfit controls the state; tho this is technically illegal I'm sure some politicians get well-compensated to keep it that way

The RateBeer site lists a few places that might have a better selection, although if it's anything like Wyoming, they're not allowed to stock random stuff but have to get whatever the state or distributor carries.

  1. Good people and service
  2. Decent selection, possibly not the freshest, hard to browse
  3. Carries a lot of 22oz Bombers, which are often very limited releases.
  4. "The best beer bar in OKC"
I'm sure you know about all of those but I'd just browse around and see what clicks...
