Every 3rd week my wife and I clean this large house for a well off couple who are just so nice. They pay us which helps and give us lots of used clothing and sometimes kiddy furniture, lamps and other stuff. Its good stuff and they get some of it from their own kids.We don't keep any of it but give it to 3-4 diff. charities who in turn sell it. Sometimes I carry a few sweaters or jackets, winter and fall type coats and the like,in my van. If I see somebody thats obviously down in thier luck I'll stop and give them a coat or whatever they need for free. Makes ya feel good knowing you helped somebody !

gotta respect this...

Japanese return cash recovered after tsunami

In a testament to Japan's culture of honesty, finders have turned in $78 million to authorities and some have waived their right to the money even when the rightful owners cannot be found.

True, but my point is there is nothing wrong with being selfish. It is a basic tenet of human sanity and necessary for survival. Acts of charity are both selfish and selfless acts all in one, you are selfless because you are giving up something that you otherwise could have spent on yourself whether it be money, material possession or time and selfish because of the joy and appreciation you receive from the act. In other words, it's all good and to over analyze it IMO is a waste of time.

For me personally, half the joy of doing an act of charity is keeping it on the lowdown.

I know a couple people who lived in England for a short period of time during college so they can't donate due to the whole Mad Cow thing.

That's exactly what happened to me. Couple years ago I started giving regularly, three or four times I guess, then they decided they didn't want mine anymore.

My uncle has a rare blood problem, he's getting at least one transfusion a week (!!), so the family has exhorted folks to donate. I'd do it if they'd take it!

Inviting Ingrid for dinner every night.

Giving another neighbor a package of ramen soup so she didn't have to walk to the store to buy some.
