He's funnier when solo. Takes the time to tell some goofy stories.

At Sweetwater in Mill Valley he talked about how some guy near the front of a different show was repeatedly yelled "MISSING YOU" at him. After a while Hiatt realized this guy had gotten all dressed up and brought his date to see John Waite... That was funny enough but, of course, near the end of the show as he asked for requests, the crowd yelled Missing You - and he obliged with the beginning of it...

We were in the audience of a solo acoustic show of his the night Leonard Cohen's death was announced.  He came on stage with tears in his eyes, and told us about meeting Leonard when he (Hiatt) was a young upstart.

I've seen him several times, solo and with various others, and hated to miss the chance, but I have to train someone at work today, and can't do that on little or no sleep.  Sigh.

I've seen him a couple of times, 3 maybe. GAMH with the Ben Vaughan Combo opening, the Roxy in LA, there was another one where I can picture the scene but nothing else, maybe DNA Lounge. Yeah, a good storyteller, even with the full band.

Oh yeah, it never closed. We were able to wriggle out from under it (after the people we sold owner-financed to defaulted); they sold it (literally the day our attorney sent their attorney the paperwork to take it back; they paid us off (technically) and scurried away) to a nice unsuspecting young woman who still runs it (had to change the name to throw off creditors), altho it's for sale again. She's had it for 7 or 8 years now, longer than we ran it. We opened in October 1996 I think. That makes it one of the oldest coffeehouses in the whole state.

No. Once a business gets to this point, there are outside pressures that prevent recovery. Anyway, they're only running a little classified ad. They still don't get it. They'll pay staff, taxes, rent, utilities for 3 months while they run this excruciatingly mild campaign, when they need to hammer the point home and blow it out in a week. A huge office supply store in Billings went out years ago and they sold 4 floors of random stuff in 3 days. When I got there on day 2, there were literally lines out the door. I got a pencil sharpener that was new in the box from 1950, and that's about it Day 3 they were down to the fixtures.

This place doesn't have nearly as much inventory but I'll bet a dollar they run a couple of weeks with a 20% off sale (except this and that and that and this too, 5% off), then increase it to 25% off for a month, then once everything's picked over, they'll hang on for 2 more months, paying people to take 10¢ on the dollar, and failing at that.

Can we see?
