Very impressionistic. I like that a sunset doesn't have to be intense to be beautiful.

Yow! You lowlanders gotta be careful! I'm only at 5000 here so when we go up to Yellowstone at 10,000 I can get a little loopy... 0–14k is a pretty radical climb. Mauna Kea is in the top 10 (probably) of highest US places you can drive to. Paved roads, I think a couple in Colorado are higher, everything else that high is dirt. 4WD probably is a good idea in anything but summer? Rain/snow/mud etc.

If you measure Mauna Kea from the sea floor to its summit... it's the tallest mountain in the world.
We got up at 3:05 am to leave by 3:30 am. It takes about an hour and a half to get there from Kona.
And I also wanted to defy the commandment of "4 WHEEL DRIVE ONLY" on the road to the top.
It also cost big bucks to rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle in Hawaii. Money we wanted to spend on other things
So we didn't see any "4 Wheel Drive" police at that time of the morning. {#Mrgreen}
I've been off- roading for over 40+years now, and I knew this "dangerous road" was really a freeway in ways we "Jeepers" see it.
It was indeed.

What a treat it was to be there at sunrise.
Debbie really struggled with the altitude... it's right at 14,000'.
She got out of the car, walked about ten feet from the car, and almost passed out.
I was holding her and said to take some slow deep breaths.
And then put her back in he car.
It was really cold too... 38° F.
After I made sure she was alright, I ran around like a little kid a snapped a bunch of pictures quickly so we could head back down for oxygen.

After we drove down from the summit, we went to breakfast in Hilo. Then we went Zip Lining.
A busy day... so much for a relaxing anniversary trip. {#Cheesygrin}

Very cool (literally).  Nice photos.

There's about 20 different telescopes on the summit...

This shot shows the shadow of Mauna Kea...

This is a section of paved road before we got to "Extremely Dangerous Off Road" section...

The whole area is full of inactive cinder cones. That's Muana Loa in the background...
