 It does seem to be a fairly common feature in browsers however it also seems to me that whichever one I decide to use will quickly become the worst offender.

Me too.  I blame chrome.  I think restarting it on a regular basis is a good idea if for no other reason than to keep it from grabbing all of virtual memory.

IIRC it's 7 or higher. If it's something you hate, you must not have ever rated it.

And every so often it randomly picks one of your lowest rated songs just to annoy you.
It will also pick songs you haven't yet rated and that can be a good or bad thing.

When you click Play Something Different does it just advance you to the song next in the queue?  I ask because sometimes it seems that other people are hearing the same song combination I am (based on their comments).
