It's built using Soundflower and AU Lab, yes.

The equalizer in iTunes works only in iTunes, not with say the built-in audio player of RP. I downloaded and installed Soundflower but the interface doesn't look quite like the online instructions so I'm a little confuzzeled.

i tunes is necessary for your iphone

the iphone is a slick gadget and i like it however when i swithed providers long ago, my new wireless provider didn't have the iphone

so i've been using android for a while with desired results

for music on my phone i have a playlist but i use rp mostly (and with android/ samsung lists are easy drag and drop)

on my home machines i like have an easy music folder with drag and drop and the ability to create simple playlists

vlc makes that part very easy

i should mention that more and more of my audio and video consumption is from a streaming source

i'd experiment and see what works for you

I don't like iTtunes either. On the PC I liked Foobar best but unfortunately its not available for Mac and likely never will be. I emailed the author and he has no interest in doing a Mac version. Instead I use Decibel which is the closet thing to Foobar on a Mac only more simplified. Decibel also has the best sound quality on a Mac due to the way it takes over the output device natively. Its not free but well worth the $33 bucks.
I use VLC for watching DVD's and listening to RP though.

I'l still need iTunes for another year for syncing/updating my iPhone. But since I really don't use my iPhone much to listen to music, I don't suppose a separate/better media player on my laptop is out of the question. When our contract is up next summer I think we'll be going Android for phones, then it won't matter.
