Ennui

He often expressed
A curious wish,
To be interchangeably
Man and fish;
To nibble the bait
Off the hook,
Said he,
And then slip away
Like a ghost
In the sea.

LOVE SORROW ~ Mary Oliver

Love sorrow. She is yours now, and you must
take care of what has been
given. Brush her hair, help her
into her little coat, hold her hand,
especially when crossing a street. For, think,

what if you should lose her? Then you would be
sorrow yourself; her drawn face, her sleeplessness
would be yours. Take care, touch
her forehead that she feel herself not so

utterly alone. And smile, that she does not
altogether forget the world before the lesson.
Have patience in abundance. And do not
ever lie or ever leave her even for a moment

by herself, which is to say, possibly, again,
abandoned. She is strange, mute, difficult,
sometimes unmanageable but, remember, she is a child.
And amazing things can happen. And you may see,

as the two of you go
walking together in the morning light, how
little by little she relaxes; she looks about her;
she begins to grow.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR ASSEMBLING THE MIRACLE

By Peter Cooley

Go light a candle in your darkest room.
If you can’t find the candle, find the room.
If you can’t find the room, then the candle.
If you go, you know, one of them will come.

It is simple, to pray, to meditate
You need to fly beyond expectation
And all you need is darkness and some light.

This morning I came into my study
Before dawn but the candle was this poem
Disguised as a sheet of plain white paper.
Because I left it here to wait for me
Last night before I slept it was on fire.
It’s a small flame I put my hand into
Without pain, with the gold transfiguring
Just everything in sight, which is enough

The rented lakes of my childhood

I remember the lakes of my Michigan
childhood. Here they are called ponds.
Lakes belonged to summer, two-week
vacations that my father was granted by
Westinghouse when we rented some cabin.

Never mind the dishes with spiderweb
cracks, the crooked aluminum sauce
pans, the crusted black frying pans.
Never mind the mattresses shaped
like the letter V. Old jangling springs.

Moldy bathrooms. Low ceilings
that leaked. The lakes were mysteries
of sand and filmy weeds and minnows
flickering through my fingers. I rowed
into freedom. Alone on the water

that freckled into small ripples,
that raised its hackles in storms,
that lay glassy at twilight reflecting
the sunset then sucking up the dark,
I was unobserved as the quiet doe

coming with her fauns to drink
on the opposite shore. I let the row-
boat drift as the current pleased, lying
faceup like a photographer's plate
the rising moon turned to a ghost.

And though the voices called me
back to the rented space we shared
I was sure I left my real self there—
a tiny black pupil in the immense
eye of a silver pool of silence.

Once upon a time there inhabited the wood
A festering sparkling irony
A crystal clear melody
A tongue tied and twisted epiphany
A litmus essential eventuality
Lichen to perfect harmony

"Dog," by Lawrence Ferlinghetti

The dog trots freely in the street
and sees reality
and the things he sees
are bigger than himself
and the things he sees
are his reality
Drunks in doorways
Moons on trees
The dog trots freely thru the street
and the things he sees
are smaller than himself
Fish on newsprint
Ants in holes
Chickens in Chinatown windows
their heads a block away
The dog trots freely in the street
and the things he smells
smell something like himself
The dog trots freely in the street
past puddles and babies
cats and cigars
poolrooms and policemen
He doesn't hate cops
He merely has no use for them
and he goes past them
and past the dead cows hung up whole
in front of the San Francisco Meat Market
He would rather eat a tender cow
than a tough policeman
though either might do
And he goes past the Romeo Ravioli Factory
and past Coit's Tower
and past Congressman Doyle of the Unamerican Committee
He's afraid of Coit's Tower
but he's not afraid of Congressman Doyle
although what he hears is very discouraging
very depressing
very absurd
to a sad young dog like himself
to a serious dog like himself
But he has his own free world to live in
His own fleas to eat
He will not be muzzled
Congressman Doyle is just another
fire hydrant
to him
The dog trots freely in the street
and has his own dog's life to live
and to think about
and to reflect upon
touching and tasting and testing everything
investigating everything
without benefit of perjury
a real realist
with a real tale to tell
and a real tail to tell it with
a real live
barking
democratic dog
engaged in real
free enterprise
with something to say
about ontology
something to say
about reality
and how to see it
and how to hear it
with his head cocked sideways
at streetcorners
as if he is just about to have
his picture taken
for Victor Records
listening for
His Master's Voice
and looking
like a living questionmark
into the
great gramophone
of puzzling existence
with its wondrous hollow horn
which always seems
just about to spout forth
some Victorious answer
to everything

Unslept

... stare into the lake of sunset as it runs

boiling, over the west past all control

rolling and swamps the heartbeat and repeats

sea beyond sea after unbearable suns;

think: poems fixed this landscape: Blake, Donne, Keats.

-Muriel Rukeyser  “Homage to Literature” (1938)

Of an evening sky this blood entailed

There was blood in the forest

And blood on the trails

A shotgun suicide sky has wept

All its forlorn gory and most of its flesh

Bone - it had none nor tendons to stretch

Its breath without lungs but still sucked once

Then strangled the last neck of twilight

The silence the night the quiet the none

A torn photo of daylight remained

Like eventual or sometime or maybe

A thin sprocket of light a razor the drain

Of becoming but teased - extinguished

His tar becomes dark

Of deep night sky this charcoal emitted

The patient's mouth gaping

His charcoal ingrained

Upon lips and between broken teeth

His stomach is pumped completely

And all that remains is sweet stain

And black sticky between his burned ribs

This is where the suicide patient

Lies darkly his wrists without skin

This is where the wound was compressed

And this is where they found the bottle

Empty of his daylight prescribed

And having swallowed it all

He vomited night

Of specular dawn this horror arising

A stainless steel table

At an angle of seven degrees

Sluiceways catch serums and juices that seep

From the suicide patient with sun in his eyes

Wrinkles of cloud sprinkle drops of despair

Over purple edged moles with black shaven hairs

The urine is dried by a pale burning sun

The saliva stains gathered in jars

The snake stalks the rodent with a tongue

That can smell and the tang in the forest appalled

And people who sleep through all of this glory

Never visit this forest at all

This is the place where insomniacs walk

The landscape where suicides fall

I love like this

I love like this

With hair spilling blue and dark blonde

My breath is blue my son is born

Orchid dying cold then

Blooming twice

I love like this

Scrape the boat

Peel oxide white with my knife

And patch some holes

I love like this

Apricot jam from fallen fruit cooked

And canned for winter

I love like this

Ink from the heartwell cracked

My feet are dry and thin

Sweeping
Into the dream of the swollen blue evening
Leaping

I have some turquoise and amber
Where the sweet and sour pull of flesh
Releases my talk song whisper
Releases my cactus flower scent
When the tumbling clay roof of the church
Gives up its heat
Like the smoke from the farmer's
Dark brown prayers

Tomorrow we must visit the priest
He has injured himself

Golden Bones

A new morning
Sparkling golden ball
Of racing running ringing sun
A new morning
For T-cells counting
A new father
And his child is swinging
Her rags are waving
In the wheeze
Of a sun-damaged song
Above a photo of hunger
One hundred forms of loneliness
One hundred ways for the wind to blow
And they flap flap flap
Like the chicken in the wind
A new type of cellular desire
Without a virus
When my bones cry
I have a golden spine
Waiting for a needle
I transfuse
Yes I do that
You missed
Please wait ... Oh Jesus ...
And proper alignment
I opened a new vein
When I tore my old skin

My God look at this ...
What we have done and
Where we are now

Sick sun ran
Yellow and hot
Crossing the sky violent
Here
I became wrong
Here
My heart began to tremble

Here my eyes
Smell the new world
Chloroform or ozone?
A barrier between the air
And my delicate instruments
My flash of blue light
On the jagged horizon
My adrenaline
And my little mermaid
My world begins sha -
SHA-SHA-tremor
Touch me
Touch me
Through the broken window
Because ...I'm lost
Everything is so unreal
So cyan unreal
My vision and nausea
Undulating waves of loneliness
My inch-wings pulse
This view from the floor
And tongue still bleeding
Would you counsel me
You must know
I became something
Weighty and wrong
Then I feel your love
I love
Pity pink and wet
And stiffness white
Sterile compassion
One blue tiled bathroom
Two night lights
A red E-X-I-T
This new morning
My gorgeous wrecking-ball sun
Dragging his feet over the dance
Blue glow of television
Crosswords puzzled
Cigarette break
Medicine time
Crush paper cups
Doctor's coffee breath
Surveyed me

- Rob Diebold
