I don't want to go very far down the well-worn rabbit hole on the DH beyond giving the DH my support. ftr, I grew up as a NL Braves fan.  I am also fine with the the difference between the NL and AL on this point. I love that baseball inspires such emotional reaction.  I do believe the reluctance by the NL to adopt the DH is largely financial and not much related to respect for tradition.

btw, Bumgarner is, for me, the exception that proves the point. I watched him hit earlier this year when the opposition had walked the #8 hitter w/two out to get to the pitcher, (waaay too common, but often very effective).  He got his rbi.

Lots of examples abound, good & bad. Giants scratched and clawed to get the bases loaded today... and Vogelsong struck out. Now the guy was pretty tough so maybe anyone would have struck out, but... it gets interesting when that happens in about the 5th or 6th and your pitcher is going well. Do you bench him? Hmm.

I'll read/shred your article later

I guess you have to be a Nats fan or the guy that drafted him as the #2 OF.

He's the #1 ranked hitter this season.If I had only drafted the #2 hitter,Goldy,I'd be good.

The writer's tactic is to misrepresent All Good People Everywhere by saying stuff they don't think. Refute me this... Madison Bumgarner vs. Clayton Kershaw. Premier pitching matchup, or corn liquor taste-off? When Bumgarner came up in the 3rd inning last week and broke the 0-0 tie with a home run, sure, it was a fluke, but it reminds everyone that you have to pitch Bum like maybe a typical 8th- or 7th-hole hitter. All of a sudden, you have the pitcher's spot not being a total washout, it's serious. You're getting the full 27 outs vs the other team's 24. Even if he goes 0-for the rest of the game, he's getting pitched like he's a hitter. You essentially give your team one full inning's worth of hitters more than the opponent. The obvious advantage is obvious. Teach your pitchers to hit the ball; don't abandon the skill, and get 2, 3, 4 or more FREE at-bats per game.

There's not one DH currently playing who's destined for the hall of fame except Ortiz, maybe. None of them are names I'd tell my kids, "check out this guy... he's one of the best in the game!" Take a random position and there's going to be someone who is worth watching a game for. Nolan Arenado might play for a team that sucks, and would be a quality DH anywhere, but his game at 3rd base is what makes him an exciting player who you want to root for when he's batting.

The writer says "people say DH? Why not a batter for shortstop too?" and then gets off on a tangent about how it's not a slippery slope etc. but really. If it makes sense to have a great hitter bat in place of a pitcher, why not have another hitter bat for whoever is below the Mendoza line? It's not that we're worried about a slippery slope, it's that we're saying if it's a good idea then it's a good idea. That the AL hasn't gone to a NFL-style Offense/Defense where players don't play both sides of the ball anymore is because the AL respects tradition, too. Mocking the NL's adherence to an old facet of the game is fine if you're going to have a team of batters and a team of defense and not ask any defensive player to hit. Sure, some could do both, but you could really jazz up the game if you had great hitters and didn't ask them to judge a fly ball in the wind. If you need to bunt, you could bring in a bunter who's only in on 2 or 3 plays per game and wears special shoes. Then you could have a whole Special Teams section where if it's a bunt play (you have to tell the umpire beforehand), they can bring in the "hands" team to make sure you have the best fielders out there. Really specialize. That's the ticket. Nobody wants to see a player try to do too much.

 I've think I've made a few rants here about the new owner's penchant for fixing the things that aren't broken in general and the dearth of day games recently in particular.  There is actually only one game scheduled in Wrigley next month the god ordained tine of 1:20 pm CDT.   I currently have plans to be in attendance for it and I'll be wearing my heart on my sleeve more or less when I go there too.

Next thing you know someone will be lobbying for the DH in the NL.  Hey, I wanna see Lester try to bunt and risk his/Cubs' $155M body to, say, breaking his hand being hit by a pitch. Beats watching David Ortiz or Prince Fielder .  And all that strategy, including that mysterious double substitution — mind-boggling!  I guess if the AL could just figure out how to the play the game they'd be doing better than their all time 2353-2126 advantage  in inter-league play (thru 2014).  Of course it's of little note that the NL rules were written before women could vote (but a woman could own a team). Let's have tradition rule something. {#Cheers}

Catch Maddon on ESPN last night giving the "we play too many day games, but that's not an excuse", excuse?  That's a much-used old one,  Joe, but may have some small merit.
