You can take the BJ out of the name but you can't take the "sucks" out of the player.

***************************************************

Atlanta Braves outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. said Monday that his decision to change his first name has nothing to do with his struggles over the past two seasons.

"This has nothing to do with starting a new chapter," he told reporters. "I just wanted to. My father thought enough to give me his name, so why not?"

Upton will use his birth name this season after long going by B.J., short for Bossman — his father Manny's nickname — Junior. Upton's full name is Melvin Emanuel Upton.

Upton said Monday that most of his friends already call him "Mel or Melvin."

"Nobody really calls me B.J., except at the stadium," he said.- ESPN.com

Maybe after the 3rd and the 7th inning stretch, add another minute so you, in the first case, have a chance to run and get another beer, and in the second case, run to the men's room. They could cut the time between innings and no one would complain if they'd just go back to selling beer in the stands. They probably still do at Wrigley, hm?

Is he talking about cutting the # of games back to 154? I can see adding some real doubleheaders to every team's schedule so the season ends a week earlier.

Not actual beer but they do bring Budweiser, Bud Light, and Old Style into the stands.   Only in the main stands though not in the bleachers.  Probably some sort of insurance considerations.  You do have to leave your seat to get the real stuff. What flavors are available where does seem to change slightly every year though so you need to make a little scouting expedition at your first game (even briefly venturing into right field) to get reoriented.  I have noticed that there is a much higher probability of a home run being hit when I am not in my seat so I always take care of fluid management issues in the bottom half of the inning when I'm at Wrigley.   I like to do what I can for the team.

"New Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday that he would consider a return to a 154-game season if there was enough interest for it."

I haven't read all that much on what he said but thankfully he did add it's not a high priority.  And I really haven't heard about anyone else that thinks it it's a good idea.  It's almost like Bud was waiting until he could find someone even worse to fiill his shoes.  No wonder it took so long.   I would have no problem with taking the number of games down even as low a 150  IF  it was done to bring about a schedule where everyone in your division played the same teams the same number of times and to turn the damn 5 game division series into a proper 7 game one and maybe even a 9 game world series (which also has historical precedence) and you know how I feel about real double headers. I haven't heard anyone talking about that though.  I'm not entirely alone in views on the new guy either.

Yay. Obviously the devil is in the details, blah blah.   Most recent World Series? KC  (mini) vs. SFO  (not truly big market).  Thankfully we may look forward to another Yankee free playoff in '15.  Boston, go away too.  TB, Bawlmer, or Torontostan...they will all work for the AL East.

That is in essence is my take on it as well.   When I see a bunch of millionaires in a financial dispute with a bunch of billionaires it's hard for me to get too concerned but in general I tend to side with the millionaires.  I've noticed that nobody ever talks about bringing about more parity by sharing TV revenues.  A case could be made I suppose that total revenue is maximized by insuring that the star players end up on the big market teams, but not a very good one.  The current system helps a little and probably is about all we can hope for.

I'm basically okay with the current system; some teams will always overspend but you don't want to have to release a star player because you can't fit his paycheck under your salary cap. I certainly don't care for the sort of "parity" that means it's impossible to build a team that can compete for more than a year or two. And as we've seen, the Yankees cannot actually buy a championship; especially in the playoffs/series, coaching wins or loses the day as much as star players do.

The Red Sox took19-year-old Cuban infielder Yoan Moncada a record $31.5 million signing bonus to join their organization.

In all, the cost will be a whopping $63 million, as Major League Baseball will tax the Red Sox at a rate of 100 percent for excessive spending on international free agents.

Moncada is lauded by scouts and has the size, strength, and speed that suggest he will be a star. But the only guarantee is that he’ll get every chance to fail, not that he will succeed.

For the Red Sox, it was a risk difficult to resist. Moncada represented an increasingly rare opportunity to obtain premier young talent simply by spending money.

I also remember hearing about this outburst after the Cubs had beaten L.A. in an extra-inning game in the late 1970s:

"Tommy, what's your opinion of (Dave) Kingman's performance?"

“What’s my opinion of Kingman’s performance? What the F*C& do you think is my opinion of it? I think it was F*C&ING F*C&! Put that in. I don’t give a F*C&. Opinion of his performance? F*C&, he beat us with three F*C&ING home runs! What the F*C& do you mean, “What is my opinion of his performance?” How could could you ask me a question like that, “What is my opinion of his performance?” F*C& he hit three home runs! F*C&, I’m F*C&ING pissed off to lose that F*C&ING game. And you ask me my opinion of his performance! F*C&.. That’s a tough question to ask me isn’t it? “What is my opinion of his performance?”
