Should be about a week and 14 hours until pitchers and catchers report for the Nats.

Well, thank god that's finally over.  Now if we could just get rid of all the damn basketball we could get back to important matters.

OK, I understand why we need a leap year.  The earth's orbital period is not exactly 365 days and if we didn't correct for it in few hundred years we'd have blizzards during baseball season.  What kind of idiot though puts the extra day in February?  It's cold, miserable, and we're all about to lose hope waiting for baseball then they decide to give us an extra day to wait until April.  What would have been wrong with May?  If you have an extra day don't you want to be one that's warm and sunny when you can have a beer and watch a ballgame?  A day where every team in the league is still in the running and life is good for everyone.  We might even be able to have a 163 game season.  How does such a monumentally stupid system get put into place?   It's almost as idiotic as the designated hitter.  It's just not right.   I think I'm going to just go back to bed now.

Do they still have very many infielder-outfielder players?

Funny you mentioned that. The aforementioned Orioles first baseman Chris Davis played 30 games in the outfield last year, hitting 9 homers in 111 at bats.

Like most people these days,I've been putting a lot of thought into the future of the Orioles offensive production after Chris Davis's contract expires in 22(or is it 23?) years.2038 will be here before we know it if we allow ourselves to be distracted by elections and terrorists and whatnot.
Anyway,I'd be selfish if I didn't share the scoop on Baseball Prospectus's 101st ranked prospect. It's must reading.I mean,it would be if there wasn't anything else to read.

Naw.Anyways-

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Rod Carew is about four months removed from a massive heart attack that nearly killed him.

The 70-year-old Hall of Fame infielder carries a battery-powered device with him to keep his heart on track. But he says without hesitation he'll be at spring training with the Minnesota Twinsnext month.

The meticulous and slender Carew was fit enough last year to look like he could take some cuts in the batter's box with that sweet swing.

Now he's a heart transplant candidate.

You don't want a mesh cap that says ARIZONA on the side?

I agree about Timmy but the Giants do have a soft spot for putting players on the roster just because fans like them. And also a knack for getting washed-up pitchers to somehow throw a no-hitter, come out of the bullpen & salvage a World Series, etc. And right now there's room on the 40-man roster. I say if he looks okay in his demo next month, then the Giants should invite him to camp. Nobody wants him to fail, and to be on the Giants and fail would be bad. But worst of all for the fans would be for him to find success with another team. Especially in the NL

This guy gets more specific and I generally agree.

I really have to admire the guy's level of fandom, but I'm not sure if this is really that good an idea.  I don't think letting fans make roster decisions is all that helpful to a team.  It also kind of taints the player's achievements if people can say he's only there because of his rich friends and may generate a little resentment from other players as well. He probably gets less playing time than he could get on a team that really needed him which sort of sucks too.   Admittedly there's not much of a chance this will become a trend, but if it did it would be a terrible thing for baseball.  I kind of think even if his hip is all better now Timmy's Cy Young days are behind him.  He probably does have several more years as a solid middle of the rotation guy though the Giants may not be the best fit for him.  He'd probably ends up as your 4th starter at best while there are teams that would make him 2nd or 3rd.  How do you feel about it?  Is there a real place for him on the 25 man roster?   On a related note there's rumors going around now that we might be getting Dexter back next year.  I have really liked him as a Cub.  He really seemed to be the spark plug for the team last year.  When was hot the team was winning, when he slumped we struggled.  If he does come back though we can just write off next year's draft entirely and Soler probably gets put on the trading block.   Even if I did have an extra 20 million or so I didn't know what to do with though I still think I would trust Theo to make the right decision.
