This is why you need to watch spring training games too.  It's where they're going to discuss these things at length.  I'm kind of in favor of it.  It almost never worked and the change is much more in the spirit of the rule, preventing deceptive motions to prevent stealing and pick off runners, than a lot of the little inadvertent things which aren't attempts to deceive but are balks nonetheless.  It apparently went into effect for the 2013 season and it was discussed here at the time.  The wording has gotten a little better since the original 2013 edition too.  That was the same year that this addition was made as well.

That's what I mean by the defense compensating. I assume that statistically, Major League infields are more successful at throwing to 2nd and back to home than are little leaguers, so much so that they've made it not-a-good-play to try. But I think in a tight game, I'd lean toward manufacturing a run rather than playing it safe and hoping for a hit. But maybe in a tight game is exactly when you don't want to risk your man-on-3rd-less-than-2-outs.

I'm sure there's a statmonkey who has all the details...

And yet, you don't see it often. Seems like with runners on the corners and less than 2 outs, the runner on first should always attempt to steal, even if they'd be trading an out for a run. Of course, if a team gets a reputation for stealing home, the defense will compensate; giving up a 1st-and-3rd/1 out situation for a 2nd/2outs isn't a good trade at all, so as the team doing the stealing, you better make sure you don't get picked off 3rd. Still, nothing wrong with forcing the action by taking 2nd, getting out of a double play situation etc. Except for "taking the bat out of the hands" of your best hitter, it's always better to move up 90 ft, right?

Yes, I like to see some thinking in those situations and you are correct, which makes me ask did Tiger catcher McCann totally forget about the runner on 3rd?

I think it went a little past unnerving when the first two guys got on in the 9th.  As a long time Cubs fan I've seen my share of closers that although effective really make you sweat.  I would like to see Hector cut this shit out right now before it gets to be a habit.  I'm getting too old and I don't know how much more of it my heart can take.

After dark I can pick up several out of state AM radio stations and I'll tune into a baseball game to fall asleep to. Last night KMOX out of St Louis was coming in good.
In the Card-Cub game  Matt Adams hit a pinch-hit home run and they said it was the 9th pinch-hit home run for the Cards this year.
That has got to be some sort of record for 45 games played. I don't recall the last time the Tigers had a pinch-hit home run, not many opportunities in the AL.
I do remember in 1968 Gates Brown beat the Bo-Sox twice in a double header with a pinch-hit homer in one game and played left field and hit another in the other game.

Well they've had to come up with a way to differentiate themselves...

I went back and listened to the Giants radio broadcast and they did pick up on the fact that Baez started from 3-4 feet inside the line but didn't explicitly say that that establishes a new direct path that the runner can't leave to avoid a tag. Maybe I should go listen to the Cubs broadcast too now and the Spanish...

ESPNs crew were useless, so I hit the rule book for Baez being called out for running out of the basepath. It seems he was called out just on the fact that he was to the right of the runner's lane they paint on the ground (announcers Boone and whoever she is) saying he could still reach the bag... that's not relevant. I think DeMuth was calling it on just the fact that Baez was out to the right, but Baez could have been called out for running so far to the inside of the path, attempting to interfere with the play... he's allowed to run there if he wants, but not to interfere with the throw... but once he does go there, the basepath for him becomes a straight line to the bag from that point. So he clearly ran several feet to the right of that new basepath to avoid the tag.

Well I might have enjoyed a slightly different outcome a little more, but other than that it was a great series.  I'm really looking forward to the NLCS.   And anyway I did say last month we were bound to fall below .700 sooner or later.  I actually thought it was going to be a little sooner than this too.
