Yep. I almost like this system, because it shuts up the fans of teams 2nd place who had good enough records blah blah but it's so so unattractive to "qualify for the postseason" and have it potentially be just one game and go home. I like the ugliness of that. Win your division, boys.

Knowing full well that the Gnats were wild cards in 14. I guess it was the Marlins doing it twice that skewed my perception but only 4 WC have won the Series out of 21 years. I guess that actually is a greater success rate (should be 1 in 8, right?) than division winners.

You have to have a wildcard with three divisions and as I've mentioned before the one and done was a case you know who spoiling things for everyone again.  It is a big factor now in insuring that race though.  One in eight would be correct on the assumption that all the teams have an equal chance of winning which in baseball if a fairly close approximation.  You would sort of expect the wildcard team to be the weakest though and their success rate a little less than that.  The 4/21 is I think the result of the small sample size.  Like batting .600 in April.  When I had nothing to do last All-Star break I thought about trying to figure out just how much of an advantage home field advantage really was.  If the series goes 4 or 6 games you get the same number of home games and who gets the extra one depends on whether it goes 5 or 7.   I'd only need seven rows of Pascal's triangle to do it, but like most mathematicians once I thought I knew how to do it I lost interest.

I think it's fair to still call it a pennant race.  There's just a few more flags now.  Whatever you call it though it is the sole good feature of the wildcard system that it sort of insures one now.

I suppose my feelings concerning the DH are about as well known as yours about Angelos so it probably isn't surprising that I have come to view the NLCS as the defacto World Series.  At least after it was made a proper seven game series.  I know it's baseball and anything can happen especially with the damn five game division series, but that's what I'm really looking forward to this year .  To this point they have been the two consistently best teams in baseball in my unbiased estimation.

Yes, you have let your feelings concerning Mr. Angelos be known in this forum from time to time.  He certainly is a far cry form when Veeck owned the team.  Now there was a man that knew what the fans wanted.

I am reminded of a game I went to at Wrigley where our getting three runs off of Kershaw in the first was tempered by the fact that Jackson had already given up five in the two thirds of an inning he was allowed to pitch.  It was nice seeing Edwin again last Monday.
