You know I think I would have felt better about this if he had had something similar to your guy or really any kind of bandaging or bracing at all.  This quantum treatment of putting a cat in a box where he's both healed and not healed until you observe him is still kind of mystifying to me.  If I could go off topic for a moment I had a dog once who had a very similar injury only with his shoulder rather than his hip.  He not only got taped up on the outside, but they also cut him open and put some hardware on the inside to help hold him together too.

When I got him home after the surgery I didn't want him reinjuring himself getting on and off the furniture so I flipped the sofas around so that their backs were horizontal and a foot or so higher off the floor than the seats were.  He limped over to one, looked at it strangely, looked back at me strangely, then gracefully leaped all the way on top and laid down very proud of himself.  In the baseball picture below Theo's on a stack of boxes about five and a half feet off the floor and one of his favorite places in the whole world to be.  I've been trying to decide if I want to do anything to discourage his daredevil activities when he gets out the box or just try to create as easy routes up and down as possible for him.

We're kind of going through that now with Spock who has a bad tear in his Achilles. They want to have him in a small leg brace after a few weeks being wrapped up. But it bothers him, and the skin got really bad under it so now he's in a cone. If he was a horse he would be kept in a stall. I think we will try short periods of using the brace with enough time to give it air when we are around to watch.

Wattle's leg was the first time I had seen the external bracing. It was held into the bone with pins. He actually had it on both back legs - one broken and one with the tendons torn to shit. Unfortunately I caught him heading across the street yesterday. We don't have a lot of traffic but it's a route for the oversize trucks and the way to the Stock  Exchange so there are livestock and other trucks all the time.

We took down the routes to the highest perches after Wattle gained his freedom and made sure he had an easier way up to his food cart. But it is hard to keep them from doing further damage. I wish you well.

Well of course right now he's still doing hard time.   Even when he gets out of the slammer though it probably wouldn't go to well.  He just doesn't seem to get along well with other cats.  I did once catch him giving my dog lessons.  I came out and saw them sitting together staring down at the ground between them.  Then I saw the chipmunk make a break for it.  Theo was right on its tail, nabbed it, and brought it back to where it was so they could both continue to stare at it.  Killjoy that I am I distracted them long enough for the little critter to make it to the woodpile.   I've worried about long term limitations resulting from his injury and it was good to see he hasn't lost that competitive edge.  I think the real question now is will he still be able to play shortstop or will I have to move him to left field.

He looks a lot like our Clyde that we rescued from the vet.  He got in a tussle with a raccoon that tried to disembowel him.  Luckily the vet stitched up his belly flap and was able to save him.
