SCLR is one where I know some people. It's more of a curiosity thing. ARNA is another biotech that I put a tiny bit into, Interestingly - both biotechs on my list are tiny and tanking hard.

The other 'penny' stocks typically have similar reasons for being watched - Level 3 is my industry and an interesting barometer for a company w/ big capex costs; Q and ALU are former employers, I know people and have some legacy stocks there ( I had Lucent options at $85/share!); OpenWave is a company w/ a local branch and some people I know - they are making an interesting transition in business models as the market changed around them.

CMG has some interesting numbers, but this one scares me: P/E 43.76. And it's a fast food stock.  I sold out when the P/E got close to 20 because that wasn't making sense. At nearly 44, those are really expensive earnings you are getting yourself into. There just isn't room for that kind of growth, and you're counting on momentum and the bigger fool theory for future returns.  Note that I said that exact same thing when I sold out last year at $100 a share.

Just checked this forum again after quite a while as I need to rollover a 401K & an IRA into another retirement acct. that I plan on managing myself. The IRA is small, so I thought I would utilize that portion in something approaching venture capital-type of investments...frankly, penny stocks. I remembered you had a few on your watch list and glanced over them again. So, if you are willing to discuss it, are congrats in order for investing in Arena Pharmaceutical or was your timing a little off or are you still holding it?!?

well, hell, if you like that You're gonna love this; my complete total utter lazy procrastination resulted in me waiting until early 2009 to move my old 401(k) out of a stable money market (at 3% per annum) and into the stock market, back when it was trading around 6500 and some change.  It is the only reason I'm not completely in the hole right now.  My financial strategy consists of benign neglect.

Aw, go ahead and take credit.  I won't tell...
On a related note, you guys are, like, way more paranoid than I am!

It's not paranoia (at least on my part) as much as it is "once burned twice shy".  If you lost over half of your net worth (including retirement money) overnight and then was forced to pay a whopping capital gains tax on the money that's no longer there, you'd be distrustful too.

Even better take it (or at least some of it) home in secret after finding a very good hiding place.  I agree that physical possession is important.  Don't trust a broker to make your sale fast enough to be in your best interest.  They can and have sold their most important client's holdings first, which means that prices have dropped considerably by the time they get around to doing yours.

Could you please explain how President Obama did this all by himself, without Senate confirmation?  While you're at it, please explain how the decision to keep Bernanke is directly connected to Obama acting alone to destroy America?  For example, how did Obama get Bush, Cheney et al. in on his diabolical scheme?  Are you saying that President Obama has irresistible, God-like powers to make people do his will?

I mean, if President Obama really is this deity, the wise move would be to fall down and worship him, and beg for his favor, wouldn't it?

And if he's not a god, and is only a man operating under the constraints of the Constitution, aren't you just singling out Obama to be a scapegoat for the sins of all of the GOP politicians that are on record as doing what they did?

There are all kinds of precious metal hucksters coming out of the woodwork these days.  That alone is a good sign that the worst of the recession is behind us.  They buy low and sell high.  They're not spending all that money on late night TV commercials out of altruism; they want to fleece gullible investors.  This has been going on forever...buy low, sell high.

Based on my lifetime experience in investing in various financial instruments, I will never put a substantial amount of money into corporate stock.  I might invest in bonds one day, if the return makes it worthwhile.  The first thing I want to invest in is in arable land.  Real estate that I can live on and use to grow food if necessary.  I'd buy now if I had the money or the ability to finance it.  When (and possibly where) the economy gets to the point that precious metal prices fall as low as they're likely to get, I'll buy some as a hedge against inflation.  Other than that, I'll invest in things I can trust, like myself.
