The construction crews showed up bright and early last Tuesday, just when they said they would, to start digging a big hole in our road so they can build us a new bridge across it.   They put up all their signs, flashers, and barricades, dug up just enough of the road to make it impassable, then took their shovel and left.   They haven't been back since.  My poor neighbor's dog is really starting to get depressed with no cars to chase anymore.

In this town, they love to set up barricades blocking part of a street for some repair or other and then just leave the barricades up for weeks - even months - and do absolutely nothing.

My guess was that they had some kind of incentive to "start on schedule" regardless of how the project was actually going.  They showed up with a shovel, a drilling rig, and more supervisors than you could shake a stick at.  They also had a lot sticks that they pounded into the ground at various locations all over the site.  They used the shovel to put a berm across the road at the other end and build the mother of all potholes at my end.  They had the drill in its upright and locked position during the day but I can't see where they actually did any drilling.  It's back down and sitting in the middle of the road now and the shovel has moved on to cause more mayhem elsewhere.   It'll probably come back someday though.

This is interesting because it would make Neil one of the rare cases in entertainment where jerks still succeed. I've met quite a few rock musicians and generally speaking, they're all nicer and more polite than I am. Bob Geldof was pretty snippy but still courteous, hell, even El Duce from the Mentors, as phenomenally wasted as he was, was still concerned for how I was doing. As he ripped up a black t-shirt to make himself a new hood. Tommy Stinson probably wasn't exactly nice but he'd just kicked his brother out of the band. Anyway, almost all entertainers I've met were successful because someone (or many someones) did them a favor along the way... which is far less likely to happen to a jerk.

Most entertainers have an almost pathological desire to please others.*

Actually, my dishwasher has a 2 or 4 hour delay setting, which I never use; maybe you accidentally set something like that.
