And then they complain about promoters. Take all the risk, keep 5% of the gross.

Turns out the band leader wasn't the problem at all.  It was the twit who injected himself into the negotiation.

Twit has earned himself one of these.

Okay so the problem is too many cats. Given. What are the options? The bird people don't come out and say it, but TNR isn't satisfactory for them: they want the captured cats killed. Fine. Oh, but wait: as clearly explained, cats reproduce far too quickly for even an aggressive capture/euthanize program to be effective. Without mass killings of stray and feral cats via poisoning, the population of cats in an area will always be at or near its carrying capacity. I disagree with the TNR people in that article about feeding the TNReturned population, however. The bird people have proven (more or less) that fed TNR cats still hunt. Whether they hunt as much as they would if they were not fed, this article doesn't say. I suspect not. And someone in that article whined that they don't deserve to starve. Well they won't. Okay, some will. But removing sources of food will reduce the carrying capacity of the area and over time, the cat population will diminish through shorter life expectancy and smaller litters. Birds will return. The cat population will return. But one would be hopeful that at that low ebb in the population, the TNR will be able to get ahead of the curve, reach that 75% threshold, and keep the population from rebounding to such a degree.

We can euthanize the cats we capture; it won't have any more effect on populations than TNR; I think that it will have less effect: In 6 months, the euthanized cats will be replaced. Or we can return TNR cats, which will compete with intact animals for resources, which means to me that there will be generations of cats lost due to this competition (as long as we don't feed the cats/increase the ability for an area to support more cats). The only losers here are birds and bird people, who need to come right out and say what it is they want: nationwide mass poisonings of feral colonies. Which will have only a temporary effect unless an aggressive TNR + mandatory spay/neuter laws are in place.

You say "a more holistic view is called for." What exactly would that entail? The "Better Solutions" sidebar in the piece you link to is either superfluous (most of these things are done already) or gasping-for-breath funny: "remove stray and feral cats from communities, parks, and other public areas that provide habitat for wildlife, and take them to a shelter." Really? Someone sat down and in all earnestness, typed that out, thinking "no one has tried this, and shelters are giant cavernous spaces with abundant staff and resources to accommodate hundreds of ferals!"

Right. The only shleter available here is municipal and they euthanize most of the animals they take in.

Oh, I have lots of articles.

I like cats.  And I like a lot of what cats' prey upon.

If they were in a healthy ecological balance, I'd be okay with it.  The science (ie...non-anecdotal, statistically sound, evidence) shows that doesn't seem to be the case.

So I think a more holistic view is called for.  I understand, tho, how that might be very difficult.

Can we agree science is cool? {#Cool}
Speaking of ecological balance...I'd support TNR for humans.  {#Whistle}

Science is the bomb, but even science continues to argue about a great many things. As I said, our experience so far is that what we are doing is beneficial. The cats are healthier and breeding less, there are still plenty of squirrels and birds around, and everyone seems happy. I would agree that these results are specific to our situation/area and others results may be different.

TNR for humans is certainly an idea that bears further discussion. {#Wink}

That's one article with an opposing perspective/opinion. You and I can both google up others that say TNR does work and is humane. In our experience, having practiced TNR for several years now; the cats we have trapped and returned are visibly healthier, semi-social with humans, and aren't making any more cats. Also, we don't find dead kittens around anymore. We'll continue on, thanks.
