Why We Fight

By Chris Hedges
Truthdig
June 25, 2012

I park my car in the lot in front of the rectory of Sacred Heart in Camden, N.J., and walk through a gray drizzle to Emerald Street. My friend Lolly Davis, whose blood pressure recently shot up and whose kidneys shut down, had been taken to a hospital in an ambulance but was now home. I climb the concrete steps to her row house and ring the bell. There is an overpowering stench of garbage in the street. Her house is set amid other brick and wooden residences, some of which have been refurbished under Monsignor Michael Doyle’s Heart of Camden project at Sacred Heart, a Roman Catholic parish. Other structures on Davis’ street sit derelict or bear the scars of decay and long abandonment...

Camden’s plight is worse than that of Youngstown, Ohio, or Detroit, worse than that of east New York or Watts. It is a dead city. It makes and produces nothing. It is the poorest city in the United States and is usually ranked year after year as one of the most, and often the most, dangerous. Camden is one of our many internal colonies in North America beset with the familiar corruption and brutal police repression that characterize the despotic regimes I covered as a reporter in Africa and Latin America. The per capita income in the city is $11,967, and nearly 40 percent of the residents live below the poverty line.

Large swaths of Camden lie empty and abandoned. There are more than 1,500 derelict, abandoned row houses, empty shells of windowless brick factories and gutted and abandoned gas stations. There are overgrown vacant lots filled with garbage and old tires and rusted appliances. There are neglected, weed-filled cemeteries and boarded-up storefronts. There are perhaps a hundred open-air drug markets, most run by gangs such as the Bloods, the Latin Kings, Los Nietos and MS-13 (Mara Salvatrucha). Knots of young Hispanic or African-American men in black leather jackets, who can occasionally be seen flipping through wads of cash, sell weed, dope and crack to customers, many of whom drive in from the suburbs, in brazen defiance of the law. The drug trade is perhaps the city’s only thriving business. A weapon is never more than a few feet away from the drug set, usually stashed behind a trash can, in the grass or on a porch, always within easy reach. Camden is a city awash in guns, easily purchased across the river in Philadelphia, where Pennsylvania gun laws are lax. The guns are kept for protection from rival gangs that send out groups to prey on rival drug dealers, stealing their drugs and cash. To be poor is to face the awful fact that nonviolence is a luxury that few on the streets can afford...

Camden fell into grim decline in the 1960s as industries that had once provided employment, including a shipyard that at its height provided 36,000 jobs, packed up and left. The riots in August 1971 dealt Camden a near-fatal blow. The word spread among African-Americans as the city erupted that they should hang something red in their windows if they wanted their homes spared from arson attacks. Lolly immediately informed her white neighbors to hang red in their windows to save their homes.

“My brother came into the house, and told me, put red in the window because they’re going to firebomb the house,” Lolly says. “I said, ‘Oh my goodness! Oh, my goodness!’ I went across the street and I told my friend Gigi, ‘Look, y’all gotta put some red in the window.’ I said, ‘Y’all can’t tell nobody where you heard from, because they gonna kill me, you know.’ So they put up a red Christmas sock. I put my brother’s red underwear. I go tape it in my window, tape in my window.”

“Stores moved out” in the aftermath of the riots, Lilly says. “J.C. Penney left. … Five-and-10 closed up downtown. … All the supermarkets, we had Acme, we have an Acme no more.”

“Everything is gone,” she adds. “Camden went downhill.”

Alec Baldwin punches Daily News photographer after obtaining marriage license in New York with fiancee Hilaria Thomas

NEW YORK DAILY NEWS
updated today 1:07 PM EST

An enraged Alec Baldwin punched a Daily News photographer in the chin Tuesday morning for snapping his picture outside the city Marriage License Bureau.

The volatile “30 Rock” star popped lensman Marcus Santos once in the face outside the Worth St. office after apparently obtaining a license to wed fiancee Hilaria Thomas.

Santos was standing innocently with two other photographers when Baldwin, 54, approached with an angry glare...

Alec Baldwin 1

Alec Baldwin 2

This is also illuminating—

Baldwin posted on Twitter: "A 'photographer' almost hit me in the face with his camera this morning." He also said paparazzi should be "waterboarded."

and this is, too—

Baldwin said on Twitter— "I suppose if the offending paparazzi was wearing a hoodie and I shot him, it would all blow over..."

More anti-partisan, actually. I once was a jnee-jerk Republican. But after a course in social psychology and friends thoroughly debunking every last one of my GOP-sponsored beliefs, I set out to determine exactly how I had been so easily duped.

Doesn't "flip-flop" sound funny when it's not coming from a Republican

The motives mentioned in the article appeared rather complementary (or one more specific than the other), though of course we could get lost in semantics again.

Let's see:
Hellman, per Glantz wrote:
Democrats are afraid to appear weak on national security
...
The issue is jobs, pure and simple

Sorry, but I don't see it. It could be either-or, and it could be both. It could be neither, too. The only way to know for sure is to ask each and every Democrat involved. Had that been done, and supported his claims, I suspect that Hellman would be featuring the findings prominently.

Not only is "the issue is jobs" completely different from "(the issue is fear)", but that "pure and simple" qualifier seems very dismissive of any other motives. Was Hellman just plain sloppy? Who knows? I don't even know if such a person really exists. Anybody with $5.00 can put up a website. But all things considered, even if it was an "honest" mistake, the overall presentation of speculation about possible things to come as absolute truth is a disingenuous tactic at the very least.

I doubt that they're really cowering in fear, but it's obvious that the Democrats must project a hawkish image in order to maintain the support of a misled electorate.. But seriously now, whose fault is that?

It's not like Democrats are afraid to fight, either. Look who fought and won WWII, on two fronts, no less. Look who had the balls to beat the Soviets in a game of nuclear "chicken". Look who took military action during the Iran hostage crisis. Look who was the first to identify Bin Landen as a threat to the US, and bomb Al Queda training camps.

Let's face it, The US' military strength has dropped precipitously after the massive post-cold war stand-down (I'm still waiting for that Peace Dividend) and three very costly wars. Ironically, the US has more enemies now, and is in greater danger than it was during the Cold War. No, it's not a good time to be spending more money. But something has to be done, and soon. Blame the people who put us in this predicament, not those who must risk their necks to fix it.

Surely you meant a tall tale?

Yes, I did. But that "flip-flop" text did conjure up visions not unlike the photo. A Freudian slip? Or an aquarian flip(-flop)?

That last sentence is correct. The sentence ending in a question mark was the first part of an if/then statement.

Edit: it would also appear rather central to the article whether Dems are indeed concerned with being perceived to be weak on defense/security.

I haven't kept current on the Eurofighter, but the last time I did look, Jane's considered it more advanced than the Raptor. Time to catch up...

So that leaves Dassault and Saab in Europe, Mikoyan and Sukhoi in Russia, and the commies in China building 21st century fighters. Despite the couple of notable crashes, I would still take the Gripen seriously. I don't know much about the Rafale, but if it's anything like the Mirage was in its time, I'd consider it a real threat. Even moreso because the French will sell to rogue nations. Now that the Russian design firms have access to the latest computers and avionics, their proven models are even more lethal. Time will tell about their next-gen platforms, but with the current stock selling like hotcakes, I have little doubt that both houses will be able to bring them to market.

The big worry is what Communist China is producing. I'd bet that like so many of their munitions, the designs are borrowed from the Soviets. But their powerhouse economy and the Boeing technology that the Reagan administration gave them, I'd say that they have ample capability to go far beyond simple copycats.

China is still a closed, Communist nation. Given the unknowns and other factors, I'd prefer to assume that they have something that can kill Raptors. Therefore I see a need for a new twin-engine attack / fighter / interceptor design to be in the works.

I also have my doubts about the JSF. Think "Harrier & Osprey have a child". IMO, the next light single-engine fighter needs to be more like the F-16: (relatively) simple and inexpensive. The Marines can get by with helos and learn to trust the USAF for CAS. The reality is that Dubya spent all of our "mad money", so the fancy stuff has gotta go.

I'd also like to see an A-10 replacement. Even better, build new A-10s!

Re: Democrats Expected to Increase U.S. Military Spending

Hellman said that because Democrats are afraid to appear weak on national security, they are likely to continue funding Cold War weapons systems like the F-22 fighter plane, which was designed to address projected Soviet capabilities that no longer exist.

Does Hellman have any evidence of the stated motives? If not it's pure speculation...and spin.

As for the F-22, are the Dems really planning on buying something like a thousand of these things? I think not. In truth, since WWII, wars are won or lost in the air, and the US still needs something to replace the aging F-15 air superiority fighter fleet. Even the Air Force's newest fighter platform before the F-22, the F-16, is being retired. Currently the "C" revisions are being decommissioned.

Meanwhile the former Soviet Union, the EU and their customers have new fighters coming online that can match the F-22 in every way, and possibly exceed the current generation of F-22 jets. Is Congress supposed to sit on its hands and do nothing, just because of a Democrat majority?

"The issue is jobs, pure and simple," Hellman said.

First it was "because Democrats are afraid to appear weak on national security". Now another supposition. Looks like Hellman is taking potshots in the dark. Again, speculation, spin.

"America needs a bigger and better military," reads an October report by Will Marshall of the Progressive Policy Institute, the policy arm of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council that counts Senators Hillary Clinton (D-NY) and Evan Bayh (D-IN) among its members.

Let's not forget that the GOP-led Congress shrunk our military, promising a "peace dividend", that, like so many GOP promises, failed to materialize. And, as usual, the Democrats are left to clean up the wreckage of their GOP predecessors. And they're getting blame for this?!?!?!?
