Sad and similar - after we'd moved to WA, we kept our NJ cell numbers (still have them). hobbitt was getting calls frequently from a couple who wanted to know where their wedding pictures were. It can get exhausting. Once I was one number off of an attorney.
also, now my number is recycled and to my parents it comes up as "Terri smith" on their caller I. D. So everytime I call, she says "hey, Terri." That's my mom.

Yeah - "I didn't listen to the message."  I had gotten several callers for an "Earl" and they would leave messages if I didn't answer the phone for some reason (driving, sleeping, unfamiliar number), and some of them seemed kind of urgent.  There were a few messages which contained things like: "It's your mother; it's really important you call me back" or "You can't hide forever".  I state my first name in my outgoing message - WTF?

At first I was nice and told them they had the wrong number etc but a large portion of them would get mad at me like it was somehow my fault they misdialed.

Oh, THAT'S a horse of a different color, then.

I was just thinking of the poor people who accidentally misdialed one time (one of your couple of hundred)—because to them it was one honest mistake. It wasn't their fault you were slammed with pizza calls, but you made them pay anyway.  I've done that with a Papa Johns before—and I apologized profusely, because I knew from the sound of her weary voice that she must get quite a bit of those, especially on a Saturday night. I'm glad she didn't mess with me and take my order.

When my brother lived in Nashville his number was one number different from a local hotel.  He put a very generic just the phone number message on his answering machine and viewed the messages left as a form of entertainment.  When I answer my phone and hear a long silence I just give them the number of the trash hauling company.

Yes. Get some poster board and make giant, brightly-colored arrows with the word DENTIST emblazoned on them. Place them on the walls and floors.

because we thought most people who ask don't know how to read or can't read english (this is being kind) instead of just being too lazy to read all of the signs saying where the dentist office is, one employee here put a picture of a cartoon tooth and an arrow pointing in the direction of the dentists office outside of our door. until management decided it wasn't acceptable.

i like the NOT A DENTIST OFFICE idea...but again, people can't/don't read, so that's the main problem.
