Vagina: say it loud, Lisa Brown
by Naomi Wolf
The Guardian
June 21, 2012

Conservatives can legislate for vaginal probes but if a woman says the word, it's a scandal? Damn right, we should call it out

Brown, with strategic audacity, insisted that she was kept from the statehouse debate because of censorship around the word "vagina". House Republicans denied that this was the reason. They claimed something even more crazy, and more interesting: that it was her comparison of anti-abortion legislation to rape that led her — properly, in their view — to be barred, because, as they put it, the language she used was itself an act of chaos, disrupting proceedings. GOP Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons, of Alto, said in a statement last week:

"Her comments compared the support of legislation protecting women and life to rape, and I fully support majority floor leader Jim Stamas' decision to maintain professionalism and order on the House floor."

Brown understands her moment, and that the best defense is a great offense. Female liberals understand that when you enrage the opposition, you don't back down; you go further. She staged a reading of "The Vagina Monologues" on the Michigan courthouse steps: 2,500 people, men and women, came to watch Brown, along with an appearance by revered playwright and rape campaigner Eve Ensler...

V-Day rocks Lansing at protest reading of 'Vagina Monologues'

by Dawson Bell and Kathleen Gray
Detroit Free Press
June 18, 2012

LANSING — Several thousand people thronged the state Capitol lawn this evening, to protest the treatment of two female lawmakers who were barred from speaking on the House floor last Thursday following an emotional debate over abortion.

The performance, kicked off by the work’s author Eve Ensler who flew in from California for the occasion, was the culmination of five days of reaction to the decision by House Republican leaders to issue one-day revocations of the right of state Reps. Lisa Brown, D-West Bloomfield, and Barb Byrum, D-Onondaga , to speak on the House floor...

Tornado season is upon us once again - here's the one we had last night.

In Michigan, when there's a tornado, we party!  On the serious side, this thing damaged or destroyed more than 100 homes.

Wow, I so wish. rd, thanks for resurrecting this! I'd forgotten that I'd started it years back. I'll head to TC probably in February, and then I'll be in Glen Arbor off and on from May to October next year.

Do we have any Michigan Peeps here? Seems we have a bit of dearth of Michiganders.

I see from the map that there's a listener in Livonia of all places (my home town.)

I'm heading there for the annual vacay/family visit... might be fun to catch a few RPeeps while I'm around!
