Why Some of the Worst Attacks on Social Science Have Come From Liberals

Many liberals, after all, have convinced themselves that it’s conservatives who attack science in the name of politics, while they would never do such a thing. Galileo’s Middle Fingercorrects this misperception in a rather jarring fashion, and that’s why it’s one of the most important social-science books of 2015.

At its core, Galileo’s Middle Finger is about what happens when science and dogma collide — specifically, what happens when science makes a claim that doesn’t fit into an activist community’s accepted worldview. And many of Dreger’s most interesting, explosive examples of this phenomenon involve liberals, not conservatives, fighting tooth and nail against open scientific inquiry.

daughter into her arms to soothe her and she started to rock her gently. She rocked her a little more and slowly the little girl started to calm so her mother,
seeing that her rocking was easing her daughter's fervent weeping, started to shake her. She shook her so hard that the little girl's head began to flop around as
if connected to her body by a bundle of thick yellow noodles. Then she realized what happened. She was half-crazed with guilt and could not think of what to do.
Her mind raced. This couldn't be real. She tried to imagine how she would explain this to her husband. She ran into the bathroom and took a calming pill to relax
her and help her cool down. She felt a tiny bit better but she still couldn't control herself and smashed a lamp. Then she knew that one pill pill was not enough
and she returned to the bathroom and took four or five more pills.

In a very short time she felt limp and exhausted and lay down beside her lifeless daughter's body. The small, blond head was twisted and her head faced down
at an impossible 180 degree angle. The mother couldn't look at her sweet young child nor could she the touch the twisted blue cords that were once her neck.
She staggered back to the medicine cabinet and took all the pills that were left. The tranquilizers and the pills for constipation. The she stumbled back to the bed,
to her daughter, and the ragged kitten, whose cloudy eyes stared at the sheer curtains blowing slowly in the hot afternoon breeze which came around this time every
day in Summer. With a whisper like a broom or once-told secret, the woman voided her bowels completely and massively as a thin ropy bubble with a lovely
green and blue opalescent hue gently deflated in the corner of her red, red mouth. The remaining psycho-electric power in her mind and nerves and twitching
muscles drained like a river delta into space and time, absorbed by all that is and she never knew. Never knew of anything ever again.
