Pretty much everything I do throughout the process is geared toward making the photo pop.

It starts when I frame the subject. I try, as much as it's possible, to put the subject against a dark background. The limited depth of field that comes with being that close also helps to make the subject pop.

It continues with software. I use Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop, and Nik Silver Efex Pro 2. The first thing I do when processing is make sure I find the black point and near white point(white with detail). Think of it as having a full range of tones in music. Everything from the deepest bass to the highest highs. In addition, there are controls for contrast and clarity/structure(midtone contrast control). Most of my photographs also have some amount of vignetting added to help push the eye to the center of the image.

One of the most important steps is sharpening. I usually produce three different finished files. One is 600px for web. One is sized for a full frame slideshow on my computer. And one version is for print.  All sharpened based on size and whether it is print or screen.

It sounds like a lot, but it really only takes a few minutes per photo.

Got it, and, in fact I'm using similar techniques (probably learned from you years ago). But using the same techniques with color and monochrome I am seeing different results. Do I need to spend more time with sharpening on monochrome?

Time to ask a novice question: What do you do to make your B & W pop? I think I've taken a few shots that would lend themselves to B&W, but I can't get them to really wake up there.
