On Sunday, June 20, 1948 a new show called Toast of the Town debuted on CBS. This was the first broadcast of what later became known as The Ed Sullivan Show.
 Guests for the first episode included Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis, as well as Rodgers and Hammerstein.

1955 – The polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, is declared safe and effective.
On April 12, 1955, Edward R. Murrow asked Jonas Salk who owned the patent to the polio vaccine. “Well, the people, I would say,” Salk responded. “There is no patent. Could you patent the sun?”
