Facebook billionaire Sean Parker's $10 million California wedding just got even more expensive.
The California Coastal Commission and Parker on Monday said they have reached a $2.5 million settlement to pay for coastal conservation programs after the Napster co-founder was caught building a movie-set-like wedding site in a protected area without proper permits.
Parker, the former president of Facebook, married singer-songwriter Alexandra Lenas on Saturday.
Parker built a cottage, fake ruins and staircases near redwoods and a coastal stream without getting permission.
The commission said the money will be used to purchase public easements and hiking trails and as grants for coastal conservation nonprofits.
Parker said in a statement that he was excited to support conservation-related projects.
I just refreshed the page several times. It's just so cool all the things I'm interested in. If I ever forget what they are I can just go to the hatchcam site.
I'm not really worried about anything. Maybe I'm not making my point well. A local service I've used for years that has typically had windsurfing ads suddenly has ads for the kitchen faucet I looked at the other day from the site I visited. It was a WTF moment. That's why it's in the WTF thread.
I'm just amused by them because they usually feature things I researched on Amazon and bought locally. "Don't need that, got one!"
I suppose I really don't mind the ads, and I suppose I'd rather pay by having an ad on the page than paying a subscription. It was just a WTF moment when I realized what was going on.
Yeah, I get that. That's why I use notscripts and adblock. But I do like the idea of having add free options when available. The RP model works if there is value in the service.
Everyone is looking to make a buck. As an option / solution, since you know him how about striking up a conversation about it? Tell him it felt weird and ask if he's ever thought about just making it a subscription kind of service. Or maybe donation based? If it's like most associate/referrers, he's not getting rich off it. So if he was getting enough $s to offset his ISP bill a couple times a year he'd probably be happy.

But if I bump into the guy I'll mention to him how it felt when I first realized what I was looking at.

If you're worried that he and others can see you've been on Amazon looking for Peat Moss, don't. I mean, he probably could figure out a few things about you but it isn't like he gets a report "SS was served up an ad for 3-toed-shoes".

Yeah. The point is, I guess, that I'm not way out there on the web encountering this. The cam is a mile away. The site is local. The guy is local. It just feels weird that some little service from a guy I see around town once in a while, a service that one would never guess would have evolved to this, is now linked to the greater internet and everything that comes with it. And how simple that must be to do. I kinda feel betrayed. And violated.

I live in a small town. A local guy has a cam pointed at the river so windsurfers and kiteboarders can see the conditions. There have always been ads for windsurfing sails and boards and stuff cycling through around the perimeter of the image. Now I see the ads are from Amazon and Faucetdirect.com, sites I've recently visited, trying to sell me things I've viewed at their website. WTF?
