I wasn't completely dazzled either, but it was enjoyable. I like how it paid respect to the 1978 original (even aping the soaring opening titles) while creating new intrigue.
The actors are well cast, but fall a bit short. Kevin Spacey has a nifty entrance as Lex Luther, then sulks through the rest of the picture. Parker Posey is almost completely wasted as his moll.
I think I'm pretty much done with CGI, though. What can you say when the flying scenes in the Christopher Reeve films look better than in this?? Many shots of Superman, especially as he does his vertical levitation and the camera pans around him, look artificial. Brandon Routh's face looks synthetic. It reminded me of some of the scenes in MATRIX RELOADED, as Keanu Reeves (Neo) hovered over the one-hundred agent Smiths. Once the film looks like a Playstation game, my involvement becomes nil, and I just don't care about what happens. The recent SPIDERMANs have similiar problems for me.

I couldn't suspend my disbelief. The airliner scene started it all off on the wrong foot. A baseball field? Please....
And I still don't see how the kryptonite scam worked.
I left the theater when "modern medicine" got invloved.
You'll know pretty quick if the movie's right for you. I'm not saying it's bad. It just didn't work for me at all.

I saw it last night too! I would have to say that your review is right on. I really enjoyed it too. Spacey did an excellent job continuing the Lex Luthor that Gene Hackman had started. I also loved the old school titles and the way that they didnt' try to make Superman's powers any more spectacular than they were in the original.
All in all, it was a great movie... except for that one little plot point which I will not reveal.

My husband and I went to see it last night. I didn't go in with extremely high expectatations considering I don't particularly care for the original (I don't dislike it...I just never really took to it) and wasn't worried about the new one comparing to the old.
I really, really liked it. I think Brandon Routh did the character justice and I was even ok with Kate Bosworth as Lois (I really don't care for her usually).
Even though Superman the character tends to be pretty two dimensional as a rule I think Routh brought some feeling to him, even if it was ever so subtle.
Kevin Spacey as Lex was entertaining although not really menacing. I actually enjoyed the story that existed outside of the rivalry between Lex and Superman more, the story and relationship between Superman and Lois (I'm a romantic, what can I say).
That being said the special effects were fantastic and the movie is really good visually. There is a lot of action.
Also, there's a feeling of nostalgia with it that relates back to the original and the director really did a good job paying homage to Christopher Reeve and the original movie while presenting a Superman of his own that lives up to our expectation of what Superman should be.
