Watching it right now, thanks for the heads up. It's...well, okay, so far. But it needs to pick up, if it can stand comparison to Tin Man.

We need better original sci-fi programming, and this network (apart from this, and Tin Man, and Eureka) is not providing it.
They have had some good shows, I love the original Stargate series as well as Atlantis. BSG was absolutely fantastic! Admittedly most of their programming is dreck though. |

Has a lot of great actors in it: Kathy Bates, Matt Frewer, Tim Curry, Harry Dean Stanton. It is a re-imagining of 'Alice in Wonderland', with a healthy dose of social commentary thrown in (not unlike the original). The characters are identifiable (Tweedledee and pal, The Dormouse, et al) but not one-for-one recreations. Anybody else see it? I was impressed with the cast and production. Looking forward to tonight's conclusion. http://news.lalate.com/2009/12/07/lewis-carrolls-syfy-alice-2009/http://www.syfy.com/alice/

Did he write some stories with Larry Niven? |

Heinlein? Loved his stuff as a kid and as a teenager. As I grew up I became more aware of the scary, even sinister crypto-fascist subtext in some of his writing ("Coventry" and Starship Troopers for two examples). That rather turned me off of his "philosophizing" big time. |

If you're looking for SF (SpecFi) to read - check out Dan Simmons - especially the Hyperion / Endymion cantos. You will not be sorry.
I'll second you on the Dan Dannerman being a pain... at least some of him was (were?) anyways.
Also, I have the hardback vertions of Hyperion Cantos as well as the Endymion books. I absolutely love the Hyperion books, and greatly enjoyed the Endymion books (not as much though, I liked the style of the first two in addition to the story told).
One other thing Pohlwise I can add to this that I've read is the Starchild Trilogy. It was something for the fledgling days of science fiction, and had the distinct ability to still be able to be unique (early 1960's I believe). |

A terrific read by Pohl: The Way the Future Was, his autobiography as a writer, editor, and thinker.
As much as I love his books and stories (especially the Heechee series) I am most grateful to him for guiding Galaxy magazine thru some of its most productive years. He's a hell of an editor.
It's currently fashionable to deride SF as not being "character driven", but Pohl has managed to both build memorable characters and put across interesting ideas. If you're looking for an introduction I recommend Gateway, but his short story collections are also good fun. |

The half dozen or so we have just aren't enough I tell you!
How many people have read any of Frederick Pohl's numerous series or standalone books?
Gateway is easily in my top-ten sci fi books that I'll recommend to people. The remaining Heechee books I found to be enjoyable reads, though I know they have their detractors (a similar case to A. C. Clarke and Rama, where the introduction of the aliens is met with criticism).
I've also read the Eschaton Sequence, and while he has some unique approachs to transportation and duplication, I found myself floundering during parts of the series. I'm planning to give these another go soon.
Of course there are the single books that seem to make up a pretty good foundation for science fiction over the past 30 years (The Forever War, Space Merchants / Merchants of Venus, and what I'm currently reading which is The Voices of Heaven.
So let's hear it, who's a Pohl fan in these parts? I'm betting at least one of you fellow RPers are! |
