"Ripper Street" starring Matthew MacFadyen, Jerome Flynn (who also plays the mercenary Bronn in "Game of Thrones") and Adam Rothenberg. My God, this is so good. MacFadyen plays Inspector Edmund Reid, head of H Division of the London Constabulary in Whitechapel. Sergeant Bennet Drake (Flynn) and former US Army Surgeon Homer Jackson (Rothenberg) assist Reid in solving crimes in Whitechapel, about six months after the last Jack the Ripper killing (1889).

Incredible acting, writing and directing. Attention to period detail is outstanding. Be prepared for more convoluted dialogue, especially from Inspector Reid. I kept re-winding to track the subordinate clauses and inverted syntax. Definitely worth it.

Season 1-4 now available on Netflix streaming and DVD.

My guilty pleasure is Upper-Middle Bogan. A sit com about an upper crust doctor who finds out she is adopted and her bogan birth parents want to meet her. The merging of the two families is pretty funny without being too mean.

Westworld was pretty satisfying. With Ed Harris and Anthony Hopkins, one knew it was going to be good, but it surpassed expectations with rather complex plot lines.

I was expecting a lot more. It was ultimately mediocre wrapped in some fancy packaging, IMHO.

Picked up the book on a whim, not knowing anything. Really enjoyed it. Kind of a grown up Harry Potter story.

Bertie Carvel, the actor who played Jonathan Strange in that series, is in another good series, "Dr. Foster" on Netflix. Dr. Gemma Foster loves her husband (Carvel) dearly but begins to suspect that he may be having an affair. Haven't watched the fifth (and last) episode but overall it's quite entertaining even when some plot developments feel a bit bolted on. I can't imagine how the series could have a second season. Edit: just finished watching the last episode: brutal.

Also on Netflix:  "Spotless" about two brothers with a very troubled past who get pulled into working for a calm but ruthless London gangster (played by the actor who was Bates, the limping valet in "Downton Abbey.") Not for the squeamish. Another series that creates so much suspense and conflict that you can't imagine a second season.
