Snow was on its way.
Walking to the bus stop this morning, I felt it. There is a special quiet and stillness in the hours and minutes before a snow storm, a stillness that city noises can't really intrude upon. The chilly air seems almost pregnant with moisture; the low hovering clouds seem to absorb much of the world's background noise.
As the snow began to fall while I waited for the bus, I was reminded of my younger days growing up in the country. I used to love walking in the woods while it snowed; it made me feel bold and adventurous. In that stillness, you can distinctly hear the sounds of a snowstorm, particularly if there is not much wind; first, the staccato of granules or flakes of snow striking the dry leaves and branches covering the ground. A softer sound is heard from above as the snow falls on living leaves and pine needles on the boughs above. ... |
| Suggestions/ideas for my SS Posted: Nov 21, 2010 - 9:20am |

As a repeat participant in the RP gift swap initiated by Mary I wanted to provide updated guidance/hints in case my SS is looking for ideas (they've probably already gone out and bought some business envelopes and a ream of paper). I do try to get into genuine (noncommercialized) spirit of Christmas, so if you'd like to donate some money to a worthwhile local organization, or even donate some of your time helping out with a toy drive etc. instead of sending something my way (I truly live a blessed life, so I don't really "need" anything),that would be greatly appreciated too. You can see what sort of music I like from looking at RP songs that I rate highly. I'd say my tastes are pretty eclectic, not really into classical, despise mainstream (Nashville) "Country" music (but I like the real thing), have developed a liking for jazz, and as always enjoy progressive, rock, blues, folk, bluegrass, R&B, Soul, Cajun, Irish/Scottish, West African Ju-Ju ... |

I took the day off from work on election day and spent the day volunteering, driving people to the polls. It was a very uplifting experience. |

| Wildlife sighting Posted: Mar 14, 2006 - 2:31pm |

I just remembered!
I had my second sighting of a nocturnal canidae this year last night heading home from work. Very unusual as I basically live in a City. Apparently, both red fox and coyote have been found in inner city habitats, though. Not sure whether it was a fox or a coyote, seemed too small for a coyote, but it looked awful scraggly. The strange part was I saw it at the end of the street where a friend of mine got killed at his home in a standoff with police. When it first spotted me it trotted off down the street towards his former home. If I was a believer in spirits coming back in animal form I would have wondered if it was him paying a visit to his old haunts. I followed it for a few minutes, then left so as not to upset it too much. Wildlife sightings are always a rare treat, especially here in the city. [ Show Comments (8) ] |
