RIP Frack, beloved cat
Posted: Mar 3, 2012 - 9:17am

Frack, fourteen years old,  beloved pet ''King'' CAT of my family.  The last of my children's cats, born here. He was once twenty pounds and  is now dead at ten pounds. I have no idea why he was losing weigh and it matters not. He was for sure on the last leg of a long and happy life here in the Hardwood Hammock.  Last night he fell or mis-jumped from the upstairs banister.  My precious, dog, Darla just kept barking and then, I saw him.   He let me rub him and started to breath.  After some time he gave a loud and proud cat holler ..like the Toms do when they are courting or fighting. He made an attempt at movement.  I felt after that, that  picking him up would not hurt.  We walked outside and he seemed to notice the cooler air and misty weather. I just held him. There was that twilight of between the worlds where the spirit hangs so close.

Do you use sunscreen?

Researchers at the Environmental Working Group, a Washington-based nonprofit, released their annual report claiming nearly half of the 500 most popular sunscreen products may actually increase the speed at which malignant cells develop and spread skin cancer because they contain vitamin A and its derivatives, retinol and retinyl palmitate.

The Lumber Queen Dies
Posted: Apr 2, 2011 - 7:31am
When I was in the first grade my daddy bought a ''city block' on the highway and built  a 'strip mall' where his first office was. Daddy was a builder. Then he rented that out and built the Hardware store and the Lumber Shed. I wish I had a bunch of pictures but I don't. Only one of Daddy  and his daddy standing in front of the trucks by the  Lumber Shed.

I sent one of my sons up there to Kentucky to help me make my decision.  He thought the buildings should be torn down as did my sister and mother,,, so I finally said ok..........I asked for pictures to document it all, but none were taken. It seems neither my mother nor sister, always ''ciy type folks' had any interest or investment in the place.  My son said it was creepy and somebody was living in the old Hardware Store.

Of course my vision is different. I see the lively businesses that were once so common a sight in rural America.  The after school ...

Something Pretty
Posted: May 21, 2010 - 9:00pm
I was in the Gulf on this day and all of a sudden I saw what I thought was out-of-season clumps of June grass in the water.  I avoid it so I didn't go any closer when the clusters swam off strangely.  So I think it may have been Manatees. Either way, I enjoyed seeing them swim in this video.... hope you do, too.

A Twist in My Life
Posted: May 9, 2010 - 7:26pm
I was responding to the What Did You Do Today thread when I realized what I had to say was going on too long. There have been many Mother's Days for ME. ... thirty-nine of them.  Most, I was too busy being a mommy to think much about it. I loved each and every card and hug and kleenix torn flower and special thing, but today especially was sweet.

I just realized this was MY first Mother's Day without all my children around me.  Usually, we all go out to dinner so I won't have to cook.  It wasn't that we couldn't or wouldn't it just didn't seem to fit. My red haired son had a new baby this past Wednesday, so that really kicked off the CELEBRATION. The new parents are staying home for a couple of weeks, adoring their precious baby and celebrating the new Mother in their lives.  Everybody and his uncle must be here this weekend because it is crazy with people and dining out didn't seem fun.

Soooo, my daughter ...

Old Beach Pictures

This is perhaps only interesting to us locals, but I thought it might have some interest for others.   It sure seems like a simpler time.  With the rapid decay from quasi jungle, hurricanes and sparse population of this area,  there is very little that is  old.  Grayton Beach is our oldest community here. Although I grew up in Kentucky, I have lived ...

Frommer's Top Desinations 2010 or Just Gotta Brag
Posted: Dec 4, 2009 - 5:23pm

I hope everyone can stand just one more little bit of sharing my beloved Florida Panhandle.

Frommer's Top Destinations 2010

Like the Rodney Dangerfield of the American Southeast, Florida's panhandle never gets the respect it deserves. Dubbed the "Redneck Riviera" by dismissive northerners, northwest Florida, in fact, contains some of the most diverse recreation choices along Florida's drastically under-appreciated Gulf coast, and some of the best options for visitors seeking an affordable family vacation. From Destin to the west, where you can hire a fishing or sailing charter, to the smattering of National Seashores as you move east, there's really something for everyone. Seaside's planned community is so "perfect" it was the setting for the The Truman Show, yet you'll also find old-school Florida towns with funky shops, tiny hotels, ...
