John Lennon - #9 Dream
(May 03, 2013 - 20:34)
I've always adored this song. Beautiful, exquisite in a way. Heard first on Shaved Fish, which I bought in my youth. Just a marvelous, gorgeous tune.

The Raconteurs - Steady As She Goes
(Apr 27, 2013 - 23:05)
I have yet to hear anything that Jack's been involved with which isn't very good. Love his stuff.

Sniff 'n' The Tears - Driver's Seat
(Apr 12, 2013 - 23:46)
Wow. May have not heard this for twenty years. Ha. Thanks, Bill. A great one.

Nirvana - The Man Who Sold The World
(Mar 30, 2013 - 01:34)
A first-time hear for me. Had no idea that they covered this tune. Marvy to hear immediately after Lady Grinning Soul. Not altogether different than the original, but still quite worthwhile. Thanks.

David Bowie - Lady Grinning Soul

Absolutely.

Elvis Costello - Everyday I Write the Book
(Mar 30, 2013 - 00:09)
Some of the best lyrics ever written (in my opinion) by this master songwriter. A long-time favorite.

It's A Beautiful Day - White Bird
(Mar 30, 2013 - 00:08)
Some pretty iconic harmonies here, strongly evoking images of late '60 San Francisco pop music. If the rest of their music sounded like this track, then I'm surprised that they didn't gain more traction. But perhaps sharing a small town with the Dead and Jefferson Airplane, there wasn't any bandwidth to spare. Too bad.

Peter Gabriel - Don't Give Up
(Mar 29, 2013 - 23:54)
The always exquisite and angelic vocals of Kate Bush.

10,000 Maniacs - Don't Talk
(Feb 22, 2013 - 23:33)
This was the band near their apex, as far as I'm concerned. Great stuff. Loved her voice at that point. In my opinion, they should have stayed together, were it possible. Natalie's solo career has been underwhelming.

Talking Heads - Thank You For Sending Me An Angel

Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes
(Feb 22, 2013 - 21:26)
Have to tell you guys that I *saw* Ian on tour just two or three weeks ago at the Fillmore here in SF, and he was *fantastic*.

Every song was great, both new and old, Mott and solo stuff. He has a new album out, and the songwriting on all tracks was first-rate. No weak songs at all during the show.

I saw Bowie sing this song in a small venue in the mid-90s, and I'm super-happy now to have seen Ian sing it himself. It was a great experience.

and he wrote it for Mott, of course.

Empire Escape - Silhouettes
(Feb 15, 2013 - 23:24)
To me, the vocals are reminiscent of The National, and the music is reminiscent of Arcade Fire. An unexpected combination which I'm liking very much. Thanks, Bill. :-)

Sweet - Love Is Like Oxygen
(Nov 24, 2012 - 21:52)
Wow. This is SO ELO.

Besides that, I just like saying 'This is Sweet!'. :-)

Cat Power - Ruin
(Oct 12, 2012 - 22:33)
A month ago (during my first vinyl shopping spree in years), I saw this double LP in the bins. Didn't get it, but it's cover intrigued me, the way covers in the 80s would intrigue me. I'd buy those, and discovered many an artist that way. Call me superficial. I looked up Cat Power on my phone (no less) in the store and read a review, and stewed on it. Read more reviews later at home. Decided the next day to go back and buy it. Very glad that I did. Came with a coupon to download mp3s of the album, so it's in iTunes as well as on the turntable. Several songs on this album are compelling. I understand that it's sound is very different than anything else she's done. I'll eventually acquaint myself with her back catalog. For now, I'm happy to have this nice collection of tracks to enjoy. Ruin is one of the best.

The Clash - London Calling
(Sep 15, 2012 - 00:07)
One of the best albums of all time, in my opinion.

Yoko Ono - Walking on Thin Ice
(Jul 28, 2012 - 01:57)
Hahaha, haven't heard this in many years. Never forgot it, though.

You know, I used to thing it was really weird and not listenable.

Not having that impression tonight. Pleasingly avant-garde.

Thanks, Bill.

Patty Griffin - Wade In The Water
(Jun 29, 2012 - 22:33)
Damn, coulda sworn this was Alice Russell. Huh.

Fleetwood Mac - Brushes (Never Going Back...)
(May 18, 2012 - 21:56)
I was fairly stunned and confused when this came on. A mix that I'd never heard, and sans vocals, at that. This was not on the album. Was it a B-side of a single??? Never heard this version before. Wow.

New Order - Ceremony
(Apr 28, 2012 - 19:23)
Wow, what a surprise. I never hear New Order on RP. I love their early stuff (like this) especially.

Thanks for playing it.

XTC - Senses Working Overtime

This Mortal Coil - Song To The Siren
(Mar 16, 2012 - 22:23)
This is why God gave us ears.

A more beautiful sound I've never heard. Thirty years on since I first encountered this track, and it amazes me as much now as it did then.

Thanks for playing it, guys.

Bruce Springsteen - Thunder Road
(Mar 09, 2012 - 18:50)
To me, this song's lyrics are some of the most poetic and moving ones ever written. After more than thirty years, I can sing along from beginning to end, not having forgotten a word. After so many years going through punk, new wave, industrial, jazz, etc., it's nice to come back to my roots and enjoy this classic tune. The memories unfurl.

Roxy Music - More Than This
(Mar 02, 2012 - 20:50)
Well, More Than This has a different feel than many Roxy songs, but to me from it's very beginning this song is utterly beautiful, haunting and magical. An instant classic that I have always loved.

Robert Palmer - Sailing Shoes / Hey Julia / Sneakin' Sally
(Jan 06, 2012 - 21:50)
Love Sally. The refrain gets stuck in my head for days. Good times.

Khachaturian - Sabre Dance
(Dec 24, 2011 - 21:29)
Wow... haha. Haven't heard this in ages. Thanks!

Shriekback - All Lined Up
(Dec 23, 2011 - 20:59)
*classic*

I was in mid-sentence when this came on; I started dancing instantaneously, and forgot what I'd been saying.

Julee Cruise - Summer Kisses, Winter Tears
(Dec 23, 2011 - 19:06)
And here I was gonna write 'man, this artist owes everything to Julee Cruise'... nevermind!   :-)

Marvin Gaye - Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)
(Nov 19, 2011 - 19:15)
*classic*

Spirit - Morning Will Come
(Nov 19, 2011 - 18:19)
At first listen, most of this song is kind of ho-hum to me, but the chorus is killer. The song gives me hints that I would REALLY like the album. The influences on the Glam period to come are obvious, and that alone makes me want to pick up this album and give it a serious listen. Plus, there's the whole Bauhaus tie-in. Thanks for playing this, guys. It's a reminder that I've needed for a long time.

Dead Can Dance - Radharc
(Nov 18, 2011 - 21:40)
Dramatic, enchanting and exotic, as always.

Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me
(Oct 21, 2011 - 22:09)
An instant classic from a master storyteller and songsmith. Roy wrote sooo many absolute classics, and this was one of the last ones he pulled from the depths of his beautiful soul. Rest in peace, dear angel.

Zombies - Time of the Season
(Aug 20, 2011 - 08:58)
as it happens, we were just talking about brain-eating amoebas, haha! Brrrraaaaaaaiiinnnnnnnssss!

Roy Orbison - She's A Mystery To Me
(Aug 19, 2011 - 21:31)
An instant classic from a God among men.

Ennio Morricone - The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
(Jul 29, 2011 - 15:21)
Heck yes. Thanks so much for playing this, guys. Realllllly takes me back. I took a ride on that time machine which is that album cover and song. I agree with what you said about those spaghetti westerns. That particular series was fantastic.

I've also enjoyed the two remix cds of Morricone's stuff which came out a few years back.

Anyhoo... this pulled my trigger. :-)

Elbow - High Ideals
(Jul 23, 2011 - 00:38)
That little progression with the guitar really gives this track a unique signature. As far as the vocals are concerned, I'm instantly reminded of Peter Gabriel. Haven't heard anything other than this track (which I've heard several times). I'll be checking out the rest this weekend. Thanks as always, Bill and Rebecca.

Guster - Ruby Falls
(Jul 15, 2011 - 21:22)
Well, goodness. This has lots to like about it. Some almost Beatlesque harmonies in there. And the sax near the end, that reminds me of... something. Now I'll have to go hear the rest of this album somewhere. Thanks, guys.

Julee Cruise - Falling (Twin Peaks Theme)
(Jun 03, 2011 - 21:10)
 scraig wrote:
can you imagine seeing them in concert? do we all bring sleeping bags and pillows?

Geez Louise, the prospect of that scares the Bejeesus out of me. Can you imagine? Bob? The dwarf? The giant? The red velvet curtains blowing in the breeze between the redwoods? I just shivered.

Exquisite terror.

Julee Cruise - Falling (Twin Peaks Theme)
(Jun 03, 2011 - 21:03)
Paradise, THANKS a MILLION for playing this. The song perfectly evokes the bittersweet feeling of Twin Peaks. It has always been an exquisite bit of perfection, in my book. Julie Cruise + Angelo Badalamenti = doubleplusgood.

Bryan Ferry - You Can Dance
(Feb 25, 2011 - 20:31)
Personally, I think this song sucks. I think that because I can't help comparing it to True To Life, which is where he got a lot of the music for this song from. It was his song (along with Roxy Music's), but Jesus, Bryan, be original. What's the point exactly of 'writing' and recording a 'new' song if a very large portion of it is simply a recording of something that you did twenty-nine years ago? Extremely disappointing. I expected better.

The Dandy Warhols - Hells Bells
(Jan 21, 2011 - 21:02)
This version of Hell's Bells is hilarious (cuz of where it comes from, and what it's become in the hands of the Warhols). Really great stuff. They've made it their own, completely. Sounds very spaghetti western! :-)

The Cure - A Forest (tree mix)
(Jan 17, 2011 - 21:32)
well, I far prefer the original to this remix, but it's great song either way. :-)

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights
(Sep 04, 2010 - 23:39)
A good track from a fantastic band. Second coming of the James Brown Revue. And then some. If you ever get the chance to see these cats live, don't pass it up. Absolutely amazing live.

The Clash - Train In Vain
(Sep 04, 2010 - 22:51)
A catchy (and somewhat commercially successful) track on a FANTASTIC album. There are better songs on there than this one, IMO, but this one was the hit on American radio.

Roxy Music - Avalon
(Sep 04, 2010 - 22:49)
A beautiful track on a wonderful album.

Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants To Rule The World
(Sep 04, 2010 - 22:46)
When this album came out, it seemed to me that lots of us who'd loved their first album kinda felt hoodwinked. Here was a band with an amazing and pretty unique first effort, who sounded like no one else. Then their second album (this one) came out, and it seemed blatantly commercial by comparison. Of course they got a lot of radio play from the stuff on this album, so it worked for them. But, it took me a long time to accept (and like) this album. I'll always like the first album better. Each to his own. :-)

Simple Minds - Speed Your Love to Me
(Sep 04, 2010 - 22:29)
 albertgf wrote:

Best album of Simple Minds together with New Gold Dream , more than 25 Years ago , and still sound so different .

I totally agree. It was my fave back then, though Sons and Fascination/Sister Feelings Call and Empires and Dance were all great, as well.

I actually missed hearing this on RP tonight. Guess I'll have to pull out the vinyl now. Aw, shucks.

To me, the album that this track appeared on was their last good thing. Just my opinion.
