RP is putting me right where I need to be this morning. As always, thanks! {#Sunny}

The Avett Brothers - Head Full Of Doubt - Road Full Of Promise
(May 17, 2013 - 09:28)

Feels like a beautiful connection between this and "Ripple." Thanks for this combination.

Richie Havens - Freedom
(May 16, 2013 - 10:37)
I played this song for my Lyricism classes when he passed recently. The kids sat spellbound watching this performance and loved his exit. RIP, Richie.

Bill, thanks for reading Cynaera's most eloquent quote.

Van Morrison - It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
(May 15, 2013 - 12:28)
I love this song, but definitely not this version.

Awesome segue from Leo. {#Dancingbanana}

Corey Harris - Parchman Farm Blues

Oh yeah, old timey, down in the dirt. I dig.

Joe Bonamassa - Stones In My Passway
(May 13, 2013 - 11:32)
This song is BA.

Tony Furtado - Portlandia
(May 13, 2013 - 11:11)
A treasure from our corner of the world. Tony's the real deal.

Owiny Sigoma Band - Owiny Techno
(May 13, 2013 - 10:55)
Wow! It's early, but the first numbers do not look good! 2.4 at this time. Ouch. The first 30 seconds sounded like a serious case of hiccups.

Neil Young - Unknown Legend
(May 08, 2013 - 14:01)
One of the first songs I presented to my Lyricism classes, with specific looks at imagery and storytelling in songwriting. Even 16 and 17 year olds liked this song.

Neil Halstead - Seasons
(May 07, 2013 - 14:46)
Perfect song for a road trip in this Oregon sunshine, windows down, feeling good about the present moment and this great song. {#Sunny}

Anna Ternheim - Bow Your Head
(May 07, 2013 - 14:33)
I thought this was Suzanne Vega before I looked. I like this song a lot.

Richard Shindell - Transit
(May 03, 2013 - 15:07)
What storytelling! Love it!

Neil Young - Natural Beauty
(May 03, 2013 - 08:07)
Nicolette Larson's backup vocals on this work so well. What a beautiful voice she had, and what a shame we lost her so early.

Mumford & Sons - The Boxer (w/ Jerry Douglas)
(May 01, 2013 - 12:55)
The only redeeming quality about this is the work of Jerry Douglas.

Vision Thing - Barcode

(Oh, who cares if the cats fight? Someone will win, someone will lose. And broken dishes are just a reason to go to the dollar store and buy stuff that actually matches.){#Sunny}

I miss these posts.

Bonnie Raitt - Burning Down the House (live)

Bonnie is underrated as a solid guitarist. This is not bad.

Fanfares are common to all ages.  That you're ignorant of that fact is . . . unsurprising.  But then you're probably too 'cool' to bother actually learning anything.  Like where the volume control is.

A little over a year ago, I was invited to London with a friend who works in show business. We had many activities scheduled but there was one meal that stood out.We were invited to a dinner at a small home in central London owned by a well known artist. Nothing fancy. My friend and I along with four other people. I recognized one of the people right away since he is a very famous TV producer here in New York.While I was saying hello to him, a short fellow with whispy hair came up to me, shook my hand and said, "Hi. I'm Paul." It was Paul Simon. I fought the collapse of my knees and the tears that automatically came to my eyes and we all sat down at the kitchen table for a simple dinner. We talked all night (I work in healthcare and he has a particular interest in the field). He was funny, charming and made me feel like what I do was the most important thing in the world. An incredibly nice man who just seems so comfortable in his skin.
I got back to my hotel and stayed up all night listening to every song he wrote that happened to be on my ipad (most of his catalog). All I wanted to do is tell him how much his music meant to me as a child and teen. How I would listen to his records over and over until they were so worn that I knew when the next pop or skip would come up. Or how many times a tear would come to my eye when I realized the meaning of what he was singing and how I was convinced he was singing to me.
I've lived an amazing life and have met many famous people. But never a hero. I've thought about that dinner almost every day since. I hope  I continue to think of it every day of this life.

Beautiful! Thanks for sharing. In the words of Napoleon Dynamite, "Lucky!"

I agree with the previous comment. Play it again, Bill. Why? Here's why:

Definition of ECLECTIC

1. selecting what appears to be best in various doctrines, methods, or styles
2. composed of elements drawn from various sources; also : heterogeneous

So playing Journey every day, along with a variety of other classic rock/pop hits that anyone can listen to on ANY generic, homogenized format geared to the lowest common denominator of crass, money-driven commercialization: that is NOT eclectic

Playing the odd Journey song (or yes, Boston, Kansas, or ELP song - that's about as far down that rabbit-hole as I am willing to go) on an otherwise outstanding, taste and personality driven station that specializes in interesting, smart, always moving and lovely mixes of almost every style of music that humans have produced over the years? THAT is eclectic.

Now, Motley Crue? THAT might be taking it too far {#Bananajam}{#Angel}. Keep on jamming, y'all.

I remember listening to this whilst driving over the yorkshire moors on a cold, misty, winters day in the late 1980's.  Life at the time was pretty damned grim.  Shortly afterwards I decided to leave my job working for an old industrial giant in the north of england and moved on the brighter, better things, never looked back!  Not sure it was all down to Mr Waters and co but he helped!

I, too, have followed them from the beginning—in fact from the time they were The Warlocks, and regardless of what you think of its place in the greater canon of their work, this is a pretty cool song. Garcia's solo could serve as an object lesson to beginning guitarists on how to build your solo around the song's melody.

I'm metastatic and one of the things I amuse myself with at work is creating a soundtrack to my death.  When my mom was in hospice, no one told us the signs of impending death and instead of hearing calm, she heard us freaking out.  I'm thinking that her last thought was that my sister and I had to stop being such ninnies - that being a favorite comment made to us and especially to me.

This song is on the top of my list.  I don't want sad b/c I when the time comes, I don't want to delay my passage by thinking about sad things - I want music that feels calm and 'pretty' and which might be reassuring to my husband, sister and cousin.

I don't mean this to be morbid.  I have a concurrent list called 'Things to play during Remission Periods'.  Lots of dance tracks on that one!

This is not morbid at all. In fact, this is a tremendous post and an idea I will borrow for my passage as well. When my mother-in-law passed, the hospital had a harpist summoned who played through her last breath and kept playing for some time after. We like to think that it helped her, but we know that it helped us. Thanks for sharing this idea.

Many of us have very strong associations and memories with specific songs that get played on RP.

On The Turning Away.

It's January of 1988 and my father passes away. I fly down to the Florida Panhandle from UMass. In the days preceding and post his funeral, I spend a lot of time in cars, driving from place to place. Everywhere I go, I hear this song. Even at two separate taverns, this song finds me. Must have heard it 8 times in 5 days.

My father was a very flawed man with a huge heart and a wonderful sense of humor. I admittingly don't think that much about him any more, 22 years after his passing. When this song plays however, it feels like I lost him yesterday.

Could not live without music.....

This is beautiful, eloquent stuff. You have captured the essence of what music means, and reading this with "On the Turning Away" as its soundtrack makes it that much more meaningful. Thanks for writing this - your father would be proud.

True story. I am a photographer who shoots live rock n roll and jazz.  It's 1985 and I'm driving a convertible with my fiance down the PCH 1 from San Francisco to have dinner with her friends.  It's before Map Quest so we are following unmarked dirt roads.  Off the majestic Pacific, we come to a simple hut with a pole across the road serving as a road block.  Out steps a smiling elderly lady who asks us who we've come to see.  We tell her and she says to take a right at the fork while raising the pole and waving us on.

While having drinks before dinner I say to our hosts that I feel like I've seen this terrain before. They said their neighbor is Neil Young and that he invites them to a hoe down every summer.  So I'm thinking of images of the farm and the barn on Harvest and Ol' Ways. It is called Broken Arrow Ranch and it I believe the same name for his recording company.

The "Live at Carnegie Hall" bootleg (1971 approx) , Young talks about this song, "Old Man" he recently wrote about this old man who works on his farm.  I can't help but think that the old woman who greeted us that day was his wife.

Keith Richards (2002): "Sympathy is quite an uplifting song. It's just a matter of looking the Devil in the face. He's there all the time. I've had very close contact with Lucifer - I've met him several times. Evil - people tend to bury it and hope it sorts itself out and doesn't rear its ugly head. Sympathy for the Devil is just as appropriate now, with 9/11. There it is again, big time. When that song was written, it was a time of turmoil. It was the first sort of international chaos since World War II. And confusion is not the ally of peace and love. You want to think the world is perfect. Everybody gets sucked into that. And as America has found out to its dismay, you can't hide. You might as well accept the fact that evil is there and deal with it any way you can. Sympathy for the Devil is a song that says, Don't forget him. If you confront him, then he's out of a job."
