Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
(Apr 23, 2013 - 22:15)
Apparently there are at least 30 human beings - or whatever - on our planet who think this song ranks a "1"
Honestly people, seek help.

Pink Floyd - Pigs (Three Different Ones)
(Apr 23, 2013 - 21:58)
Just freakin great and the furious lyrics ice the cake.

The Lumineers - Stubborn Love
(Apr 23, 2013 - 17:54)
 sirdroseph wrote:
Nothing wrong with it, but everyone is playing this kind of music now blends into the woodwork, all of these bands are blending together blase blase.{#Yawn}

Yep, it's like the Mumfordeers.

Massive Attack - Teardrop
(Apr 23, 2013 - 14:03)
Immortal.

Crosby Stills Nash & Young - Almost Cut My Hair
(Apr 23, 2013 - 12:38)
First record (remember those?) I ever bought and this is still just one of many terrific songs on this LP. It's amazing how many years good music keeps bringing joy to so many people. Whatta gift to be a gifted musician. Thanks C, S, N, and Y.

Joan Baez - Diamonds and Rust
(Apr 23, 2013 - 10:57)
A mild case of Dolly Partonesque warblage. Ack.

Pogo - Bloom
(Apr 12, 2013 - 15:39)
Second coming of The Cocteau Twins?
Well, it's happy.
+1 pt. extra credit for the perfectly appropriate and groovy cover art.

Vince Guaraldi Trio - Cast Your Fate To The Wind
(Apr 12, 2013 - 15:36)
VIVA JAZZ !

Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
(Apr 11, 2013 - 10:22)
Has Neko ever done anything that wasn't utterly terrific.
I'm beginning to wonder.
She has the amazing ability to sound like a throwback and brand new all at once.

Josh Ritter - Joy To You Baby
(Apr 03, 2013 - 17:47)
Is it my imagination or is that pretty guitar hook straight out of The Cure's "Pictures of You"?

Dave Matthews Band - Seek Up
(Apr 03, 2013 - 17:30)
How many years does Dave Matthews plan to continue re-recording the same song?

The Black Keys - Sister
(Apr 03, 2013 - 10:30)
Most utterly boring percussionist of the year award with whathisname from Arcade Fire nipping at his heels.

Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
(Mar 21, 2013 - 14:23)
Christ....make it stop.

There's like 3 Arcade Fire songs each played 5 times in 4 weeks...not like their so easy to tell apart.

Mewling + POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND.
POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND. POUND...

A trained chimp could play that "percussion."

Monotonous cacophohy.

White noise.

Mercy, please.

Neil Young - Harvest Moon
(Mar 21, 2013 - 12:54)
I'm not a huge Neil Young fan but I love every single vaguely country sad/happy song on "Harvest Moon".
And I especially love this live rendition of one of those songs - first time I've ever heard it.
Thanks for the variety RP!

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
(Mar 20, 2013 - 16:45)
 Misterfixit wrote:
"You were born to run" says a lot of things in a simple sentence.  For the Jingoists amongst us American it says everything.   "America first and foremost, ruler of the world, the top, the ultimate, AMERICA!".  I am sure that the nay-sayers and the leftie lickspittles will find fault with this statement. So be it and so mote it be.  America is still the one and only hope for the world.

End of political rant.

From all I've read the ancient Romans felt the same about their culture, as did the Byzanntines, as did the British, as did the Soviets, as did the Nazis, on and on. Empires, they come and they go and somehow civilization in general gets by without them and builds new ones upon the old.

Hubris goeth before the fall, I think that's worth bearing in mind.

And now, how about let's get back to the music eh?

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

Ha! Touché! Well played my friend.

Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run
(Mar 20, 2013 - 16:33)
Perfect ear floss to dislodge that sticky Arcade Fire residue still clinging from a few minutes ago.
Thank you oh merciful R&R god.
Thank you.

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)
(Mar 20, 2013 - 15:57)
Welcome to yet another episode of Sesame Street singalong Mousekateers!

White noise.

Blech.

Men At Work - Overkill
(Mar 20, 2013 - 11:56)
A strong contender for happiest song of all time.

Pixies - Where Is My Mind
(Mar 19, 2013 - 14:50)
Percussion, base, vocals, guitars: All weird, ferocious, and beautiful.

The Cure - Purple Haze
(Mar 13, 2013 - 17:35)
More cow bell !   {#Lol}

Jimi Hendrix - Fire
(Mar 13, 2013 - 17:31)
Still standing next to his fire after all these years.
Thanks Jimmy!!!

Cowboy Junkies - Blue Moon Revisited (a song for Elvis)
(Mar 11, 2013 - 14:48)
I've never heard this live rendering of the recorded version (also excellent). Thanks for  that RP!
That single guitar bubbling up in the middle is so wonderfully lonely.
The accordion is a nice touch as well.

Neil Young - Harvest Moon
(Mar 11, 2013 - 12:09)
Agreed...  10 !

ZZ Top - I'm Bad I'm Nationwide
(Mar 11, 2013 - 10:02)
ZZ's nasty guitar work never gets old.
I also love the way it sounds like Dusty is singing into an empty coke bottle.
It's bad, it's nationwide.

Faith No More - Stripsearch
(Mar 08, 2013 - 15:10)
Dayum, that sinister guitar at the end sounds like a dive bomber.
Wicked good.
The whole song.
Sizzlin'

Sade - Bring Me Home
(Mar 06, 2013 - 16:06)
A voice like Sade's inoculates a song from any rating below 7.
I think that's the baseline.

Arcade Fire - Half Light II (No Celebration)
(Mar 06, 2013 - 15:28)
The "drummer" actually got paid for this bit of work?

Tom Waits - Step Right Up
(Mar 06, 2013 - 15:19)
Not one of my favorites but again I applaud RP for its adventurous spirit. I will say this, there are some performers who are more interesting to see perform as opposed to simply listening to them on the radio. I have a hunch Tom Waits may be one of those.

Devo - Beautiful World
(Feb 22, 2013 - 19:07)
Ah nIce. From mediocre new Cars to great old Devo. I love you guys' sense of humor! What's next? Wall of VooDoo?

Porcupine Tree - Dark Matter
(Feb 21, 2013 - 16:12)
I just really enjoy the way so many PT songs evolve over the course of 3 minutes or so. There's a complexity there that keeps them interesting over repeated plays. And they just create so many wonderful melodies.

Anni B Sweet - Take On Me
(Feb 21, 2013 - 16:02)
For me the original is actually a guilty pleasure. There, I said it. However, this cover actually makes me want to start smashing up the furniture.

Santana - Oye Como Va
(Feb 21, 2013 - 15:01)
A solid 8 + 1 bonus point for the wickedgood album art.

Yahtzee.

Basia Bulat - Heart Of My Own
(Feb 12, 2013 - 15:14)
Dolly Parton warblage: -2pts.
Luscious violin: +1 pt.

Crowded House - Into Temptation
(Feb 12, 2013 - 14:44)
Melody, musicianship, and exquisite vocals; all in all the perfect antidote the the Arcade Fire aural demolition cacophony that preceded it today.

Cake - Comfort Eagle
(Feb 06, 2013 - 11:48)
Wonderfully creepy.

Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath
(Feb 06, 2013 - 11:25)
42 years old and still smokin' hot. What music from today will they still be listening to in the year 2055?

The Black Keys - Run Right Back
(Jan 29, 2013 - 15:32)
I try to like them, I know I should like them, I just can't.
Forgive me.
That nasty guitar business at the end is pretty cool though.

The Vapors - Turning Japanese
(Jan 28, 2013 - 15:45)
Ha!...Seriously?...Well now, THIS was a fun break in the action...I like it.

Heckman what's next?
Uhh..."Mexican Radio" by Wall of Voo-Doo !?    {#Dancingbanana_2}

Interesting observation.

English Beat - Save It for Later
(Jan 28, 2013 - 11:22)
Has it really been 30 years? Crikey! It's a lotta' fun.

Morcheeba - The Sea
(Jan 24, 2013 - 15:45)
a) Super hot.
b) Super cool.
c) Both.

Arcade Fire - No Cars Go

Dave Matthews has been writing and re-writing the same song for going on 10 years now.

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
(Jan 04, 2013 - 12:21)
Epic bangin' rock-n-roll then, utterly epic bangin' rock-n-roll now.

Monsters of Folk - Sandman, the Brakeman and Me

Arcade Fire - Half Light II (No Celebration)
(Dec 07, 2012 - 11:38)
I'm dreaming of a UFC style celebrity cage match between Mumford & Sons vs. Arcade Fire where neither shows the other any mercy.

Happy Mondays - Step On
(Dec 06, 2012 - 17:16)
Hooman dat sum happy happy mooseek!

Dave Matthews Band - Lying In The Hands Of God
(Dec 06, 2012 - 16:30)
I dunno, it's kinda the Mummford Syndrome. For some reason I feel like I should like Dave Matthews. I've tried, and I just can't. There's just something mushy about it, like static. Sorry fans. On the bright side his band at it's worst is a solid couple of notches above them Mummfords.

Led Zeppelin - That's the Way (live)
(Dec 06, 2012 - 15:37)
Zeppelin is utterly immune to the passage of time.
Immortal awesomeness.

And hey Bill, thanks for these less-frequently heard versions - bravo.

Mumford & Sons - Babel
(Dec 04, 2012 - 17:12)
If Mumford drops another .5 rating points they're gonna go code-red!

Sinéad O'Connor - You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart
(Dec 04, 2012 - 17:06)
Ah Sinead, when she was good she was grrrreat! This is a great one. And what the heck is that some kind of electrified violin in the background? It's epic. It sounds like it's being played by the Tasmanian Devil. Love it.

Mumford & Sons - Babel
(Dec 04, 2012 - 16:59)
I feel like I should like these guys. For some reason I feel like I should like these guys. I've tried. I just can't. I really can't stand the racket. Maybe I just need to be a little more drunk in a really dark old bar surrouded by deteriorating soccer paraphenalia tacked to the smoke stained walls. Maybe...naaaah. I just don't like 'em. Sorry fans.

Fever Ray - Keep The Streets Empty For Me
(Nov 19, 2012 - 12:28)
Sooo spooooky sooo nice.

Queen - Somebody To Love
(Oct 12, 2012 - 11:16)
Freddy, you're immortal.

Wherever you are thank you, thank you, thank you.

Jake Shimabukuro - Bohemian Rhapsody
(Oct 05, 2012 - 12:24)
I'd like to swat this song like an annoying fly.

Basia Bulat - Go On
(Oct 04, 2012 - 16:20)
Actually woke the dog up out of a dead sleep. He fled the room whimpering. I might do the same.

New Grass Revival - When The Storm Is Over
(Sep 04, 2012 - 11:01)
I really hate giving a mediocre rating to any musician who can really play, and this banjo player clearly can. But hoo-man...this is a style of music I've just never been able to get into no matter how hard I try. That said, I bet it's terrific to see it played. Interesting that, hmmm.

Jesse Sykes & The Sweet Hereafter - The Dreaming Dead
(Aug 31, 2012 - 16:03)
Great music for driving through the desert...what is that quality?

Camper Van Beethoven - Sweethearts
(Aug 31, 2012 - 11:37)
Strangely happy and melancholy all at the same time.

Breeders - Cannonball
(Aug 22, 2012 - 11:01)
I saw the Breeders on a sunny day at a Lollapalooza Festival in Mountain View, CA back in the 1990's. They were having fun. The crowd having fun. Rock-n-roll should be fun. The Breeders are proof. YAY!

Conjure One - Center of the Sun (w/ Poe)
(Aug 22, 2012 - 09:47)
A little uplift to start the day - very nice.

Etta James - At Last
(Aug 21, 2012 - 17:00)
Ah...radio paradise indeed !

Basia Bulat - Go On
(Aug 13, 2012 - 22:16)
Dolly Parton singing under an alias. Gawd the warbling. It's makes me want to smash up the furniture.

Björk - Human Behavior
(Aug 09, 2012 - 15:22)
I really enjoy Bjork's music, I just can't get that damn swan outta' my head.

Pink Floyd - Shine On You Crazy Diamond
(Aug 09, 2012 - 11:38)
What is it exactly that makes some music immortal? That's so rare. I think much of Pink Floyd qualifies.

Mark Knopfler - Get Lucky
(Aug 09, 2012 - 10:51)
You know, watching the Grammy's over the past few years it's occurred to me that actually knowing how to play a musical instrument or even sing well is not necessarily a prerequisite for fame and fortune in the "music" business - alas. On the other hand, at the other end of the talent and skill spectrum is Mark Knopfler.

The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary
(Aug 06, 2012 - 17:56)
Still smokin hot. The Cult was a godsend for American youth seeking deliverance from the Adam Ant Cyndi Lauper Air Supplyish musical infestation of the 80s.

Arcade Fire - Half Light II (No Celebration)
(Aug 06, 2012 - 17:34)
I've changed my mind. I've underestimated Arcade Fire. This song isn't the least bit "2-marginal". It's definitely "3-HoHum."

Sam Cooke - A Change is Gonna Come
(Aug 03, 2012 - 17:09)
Some voices - very few - are so utterly amazing it almost doesn't matter what they sing, it's stunning. That's Sam. Fortunately he sang plenty of great songs. But his voice is so extraordinary it's actually difficult to assess the song itself. What an amazing gift to be able to bring joy to so many people so long after you've passed from this earth.

Neil Young - Harvest Moon
(Aug 03, 2012 - 15:31)
Okay, that does it. I'm sending RP the cash. Keep up the great work guys. Damn this is just a really good radio station!

B-52's - Planet Claire
(Jul 31, 2012 - 16:56)
B-52's at the old Armadillo in Austin a really long time ago - funniest and most fun concert EVER.
There is no second place.

Rachid Taha - Barra Barra
(Jul 31, 2012 - 14:09)
Exactly! Well said Fred! I'm with you on this one regarding the eclectic playlist and this song.

fredriley wrote:

Quite. Our resident troll Stingray's cannibalism jibe is plain racist. For those who don't get 'world music', fine, hit mute and come back when it's gone, but as this an explicitly "eclectic" station then variety is to be expected so it's out of order to complain about non-Anglo music being played. The thing I love about this station is that I hear something new every day, and quite often songs that make me jump in my chair. This is one such.

Björk - Big Time Sensuality
(Jul 27, 2012 - 15:44)
Oh come now. It's fun.

Elton John - Madman Across The Water
(Jul 26, 2012 - 15:26)
Just awesome. At the risk of sounding a bit callous (not my intent); I'm truly happy for Elton now that he seems so much healthier and happier than when he was younger. That said, he sure did create stunning music when he was stoned, in-the-closet, and generally a mess. Go figure. Whatever the case his earlier and mid-career material is astounding. Thanks for the songs Elton, now please continue to be well!

Gustavo Santaolalla - Deportation/Iguazu
(Jul 26, 2012 - 12:31)
A great song from a very thought-provoking movie (Babel). Check it out if you haven't seen it.

Aboslutely !  Oakenfold oughtta be sued for malparctive for abusing the great song by slathering it in that clumsy monotonous monotonous monotonous candy-coated computer shell.

This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (Oakenfold remix)
(Jul 19, 2012 - 10:22)
A stunningly beautiful song murdered by computerized bass hammer with ray-gun accompaniment. Swoosh! BoomBoom. Sizzle! Sparkle! BoomBoomBoom. Snap! Crackle! BoomBoomBoomBoomBoomBoom. Pop! Sparkle Sparkle! Boom. Boom. Boom. Draw a line around the corpse of a great song laying dead on the floor beneath Oakenfold's discorave goulash.

Stevie Wonder - I Wish
(Jul 18, 2012 - 15:59)

Truly, and bravo.

Caro Emerald - A Night Like This
(Jul 17, 2012 - 16:07)
Oh come now, this is just big time fun.

Cowboy Junkies - The Stars of our Stars
(Jul 16, 2012 - 17:33)
Oh joy unbounded - an entire day of great RP music without a single second of Arcade Fire to take the shine off.
Thanks Bill !

Porcupine Tree - Start of Something Beautiful
(Jul 12, 2012 - 11:23)
Intelligent lyrics + great melodies + impressive musicianship + plus crashing guitars = pure awesomenes.
Love these guys.

Fleetwood Mac - Sentimental Lady
(Jul 10, 2012 - 10:05)
Well, at least Bob Welch lives on in his music. It's great to be a talented musician or an artist. They leave behind something that continues to give so many joy long for so long after they're gone.

Goldfrapp - Utopia
(Jul 05, 2012 - 11:24)
Goldfrapp always feels like listening a classic James Bond soundtrack somehow...love that.

God is an Astronaut - A Deafening Distance
(Jul 05, 2012 - 11:21)
Ah....nothing like a dreamy interlude in the middle of a crappy work day. Nice!

Fleetwood Mac - Hypnotized
(Jun 11, 2012 - 15:49)
A song almost 40 years old - FORTY! - and it's as captivating as ever. Thanks for the great songs Bob and r.i.p. brother.

Abba without the attractive melodies. The sound of Arcade Fire on the office speaker system illicits immediate pleading to change the station from every corner - fast, fast, fast. People begging to turn it off. Honestly, pound, pound, pound, pound, pound behind a man with no vocal talent whatsoever. Their popularity mystifies me. I've never met anyone who likes them - never.

Still epic genius after all these years - bravo gentlemen, bravo.

Arcade Fire - Rebellion (Lies)
