Queen - '39
(Apr 12, 2013 - 15:43)
Saw this performed live at the Coliseum in Vancouver 1980 - what a show!

My Morning Jacket - Hopefully (Live)
(Feb 21, 2013 - 03:47)
Bought the EP - wonderful!

Gypsy Tailwind - Way To Here
(Feb 18, 2013 - 14:51)
Turn it LOUD!

Bruce Cockburn - Creation Dream
(Feb 01, 2013 - 16:43)
Been listening to this for 30 + years and it's still near the top of my list of favorites. Great guitar work, melody, and lyric.

Pink Floyd - Childhood's End
(Jan 24, 2013 - 01:32)
Ausgezeichnet!

Translation: 9

Guadalcanal Diary - Trail of Tears
(Dec 31, 2012 - 05:16)
Speaking of R.E.M. Guadalcanal opened for them on October 5, 1986 at the War Memorial Gym, University of BC, Vancouver. R.E.M. were fans and supported them with back-up gigs. The G. Diary highlight for me was their cover of "I Can See For Miles" by the Who which they slipped into the middle of "Kumbaya". The transition from one song to the other was seemless and the jangly guitar sound was awesome. An excellent evening of music that will not be soon forgotten!

thanks for the comments - good and bad - we always appreciate honest feedback.  our new record is in the works and shows quite a growth in our sound and how we've evolved as a band... thanks for the support yall

Love the vocals, harmonies, strings, and vibe - great song. Thank you for the music. Looking forward to the new album! This track is a solid 9.

Agreed, neither have I.

The unhurried arrangement, the embrace of melody and harmony, heartfelt lyrics.

Well Said.

R.E.M. - So. Central Rain
(Dec 04, 2012 - 23:21)
When Monster was released I thought it was quite different and very good. Now, even though I still enjoy some of the songs from it, I don't think it stacks up to their earlier work or their later Automatic For The People.

Cheap Trick - On Top Of the World
(Dec 02, 2012 - 17:44)
Saw them on the Dream Police tour - '80, 81? Great live performance! Good memories.

R.E.M. - Me In Honey

If I retrace my steps, this is the last milestone where I totally loved REM. The trail peters out afterward.

I feel very much the same - with the exception of Automatic For the People.

This is a great pop song!

Fairport Convention - Who Knows Where the Time Goes
(Nov 28, 2012 - 02:21)
What a tune!

A great female singer who does this song great justice is Eva Cassidy. Her version of this is on the album - Imagine.

Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now
(Nov 24, 2012 - 02:38)
Not many songs one can say this about, but I find Bold Sides Now - timeless.

Elbow - My Very Best

i totally don't get it when people think this is gabriel. so different in my mind.

but then again, i love this band, and this song.

The lead singer, Guy Garvey, apparently is a big fan of Peter Gabriel.

Neville Brothers - Will the Circle be Unbroken
(Nov 19, 2012 - 15:18)
When you're not quite certain you like it, turn it up - way up!

Never any doubt with this great rendition, love the reverb and the harmonies. Lanois & Eno are all over this sound.

Joe Jackson - Fools in Love (Live)
(Nov 19, 2012 - 14:22)
Like the music but the singing is painfully bad. That's why I find it hard to enjoy any songs Joe has recorded. His live performances in particular reveal how poorly he sings.

Lost at Last - Ocean of Mercy
(Nov 17, 2012 - 16:10)
Good singer! Good fun! Very danceable.

First Aid Kit - Emmylou
(Nov 14, 2012 - 01:45)
Very enjoyable. Has a sadness about it, sentimental, bitter sweet.

Country Comfort - Waimanalo Blues
(Oct 25, 2012 - 01:52)
Sweet melancholy

R.E.M. - Pretty Persuasion
(Oct 19, 2012 - 03:37)
I remember getting turned on to this and Murmur in late '84 early '85. It was so different from everything else on the radio (except College radio of course). It was nice to have this band as sorta' your own in a way because they were quite obscure until the latter part of the '80s. It brings back fond memories.

Natalie Merchant - Space Oddity
(Oct 19, 2012 - 03:23)
Funny, I don't care for Natalie's singing but I do like this version of Space Oddity. The guitar parts I enjoyed the most.

Monika - Yes I Do
(Oct 15, 2012 - 17:44)
I enjoy the talented singing ability demonstrated in this song, even though at times some notes are almost dragged out of tune.

Eric Clapton - Beware of Darkness

Natalie Merchant - After the Gold Rush (Live)
(Sep 10, 2012 - 02:34)
I can't say I care for merchant's singing at all - especially on this classic track.

Lang's version of Neil's song is soooo much better.

The Fixx - Beautiful Friction
(Sep 01, 2012 - 16:01)
I've often wondered what happened to the Fixx. This song is likable - perhaps the rest of the album will prove to be good as well.

The Records - Starry Eyes
(Aug 23, 2012 - 02:54)
Wow! X 2! I had their self-titled album on cassette 30 years ago and thought it was great pop-schlock that apparently no one else I knew had ever heard of. This song was also on that album. I have since found two copies on vinyl.

Great to hear it on RP!

TV On The Radio - Killer Crane
(Aug 19, 2012 - 20:21)

Turned up it goes from an 8 to a 9 !

Bahamas - Lost In The Light
(Aug 16, 2012 - 19:58)

It reminds me of the style and sound of Ron Sexsmith. "Riverbed" or "Secret Heart" would be great to hear again.

I'm also enjoying this a great deal.

I think this album will have to be acquired - it sounds like it will be a classic.

Doobie Brothers - Black Water

This song is actually older than that, I think 1972 or so.  I remember hearing this for the first time while at church summer camp about then...  Anyway, it is still just as fantastic now as it was then...

Granted, not church music, but we had some cool counselors!

Love it!

I had a similar experience with that great old Rock & Roll at Camp Squeah in the mid '70s.

Eva Cassidy - Ain't No Sunshine
(Jun 13, 2012 - 17:12)
If one listens for the subtleties of Eva's vocal inflections the emotion and passion does indeed reveal itself. However, one must have a playback system with enough fidelity to reproduce at least some of that through the speakers.

In my opinion, Eva rarely showboats like Adelle or C. Dion. That's why her songs seldom induce listening fatigue.

R.E.M. - Radio Free Europe
(Jan 22, 2012 - 02:57)
A great old REM track originally from their first full-length Album - Murmur.

R.E.M. - Pretty Persuasion
(Jan 21, 2012 - 15:20)
Great song from their second full album! The third and final album done with Mitch Easter.

Tori Amos - Shattering Sea
(Jan 19, 2012 - 21:51)
Sorry, but this irritates me like 40 grit sandpaper. I'll just turn the volume down until it's over and let others enjoy it.

Elbow - One Day Like This

can someone recommend other Elbow song as good as this?

I love "Powder Blue" from their first album! Also, "the Lonliness of a Tower Crane Driver" from TSSK is one of my favorites. Oh, and "Grounds for Divorce" from TSSK is really good! They may not be as good (not as uplifting or celebratory) but they're good for the ears!

Elvis Costello - Beyond Belief
(Jan 19, 2012 - 13:50)
Reminds me of "Green Shirt" another one of my favorites!

Stevie Wonder - I Believe
(Jan 19, 2012 - 11:55)
Hard to rate this less than a 9 and very tempting to rate it a 10! A classic by one of the most gifted singers of the past 50 years.

Joan Osborne - What You Are
(Jan 19, 2012 - 03:27)
Osborne has a beautiful voice -she's a great singer. I thought she sounded a bit like Linda Ronstadt when the song began.

R.E.M. - Me In Honey
(Jan 18, 2012 - 18:36)
Simply a great POP song - with excellent melody and harmony!

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
(Jan 17, 2012 - 16:21)
He does sing with conviction - but he doesn't sing very well. There are other versions that are preferred.

K.D. Lang - Hallelujah
(Jan 17, 2012 - 13:47)
This has got to be the very best version of this song to date! How can you not enjoy any song sung with such perfection? Pure Buttah.

Entrain - Dancin' in the Light (live)
(Jan 16, 2012 - 11:14)
Oddly the lead singer of Entrain reminds me of Ted Nugent - like his singing on "Great White Buffalo."

Little Feat - Cold Cold Cold/Tripe Face Boogie
(Jan 13, 2012 - 18:35)

The original version of Cold, Cold, Cold from Sailin' Shoes is quite excellent also - more bluesy!

Ok, I'm a sucker for songs that include birds, insects and small furry animals—witness:

  • Leon Russell - My Cricket
  • Leon Russell - Out In The Woods
  • Pink Floyd - Grantchester Meadows
Anyone have some 'adds' for this list (to fulfill my completist tendencies)?

There are a few that come to mind...
  • Even in the Quietest Moments - Supertramp
  • Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict - Pink Floyd - Ummagumma
  • Good Morning, Good Morning - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)  - The Beatles
  • Across the Universe - Let it Be - The Beatles
  • Free As A Bird - The Beatles Anthology
Also:
  • Wind on the Water - Graham Nash/David Crosby
  • Porpoise Song (Theme from Head) - The Monkees
  • My Bird Performs - XTC
  • Grass - XTC
  • Jungle Love - Steve Miller
  • Loving You - Minnie Ripperton

Bruce Cockburn - The End of All Rivers
(Oct 07, 2011 - 01:38)
Saw Bruce last year at the Clarke Theatre - what a show! He performed this track also - it was awesome to see it and hear it done live!

Cat Stevens - On The Road To Find Out
(Oct 07, 2011 - 01:33)
From what I've seen and heard, Yusuf Islam is a man of peace - and a great singer/songwriter!

David Bowie - Helden
(Oct 05, 2011 - 19:00)
Simply ausgezeichnet!

Eva Cassidy - Ain't No Sunshine
(Oct 04, 2011 - 01:10)
Eva was indeed a great singer and this is a good version, but the very best rendition must be Jose Feliciano's live take.

The video is grainy and so is the audio but the power and groove still comes through in spades.

Check it out here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-lUBlbJkrQ

Jake Shimabukuro - Bohemian Rhapsody
(Sep 21, 2011 - 14:24)
No doubt it was fun for Jake to arrange and record this version on ukulele - and good for him to doing so. But if I want to here this classic, why wouldn't I rather just play the original? It's much more enjoyable. But kudos to him for taking on what must have been a challenging piece!

K.D. Lang - So It Shall Be
(Sep 21, 2011 - 14:02)
Love the arrangements for this and most of the other tracks from this album. kd's singing is unmatched!

Elvis Costello - Green Shirt
(Sep 20, 2011 - 16:57)
Classic Costello! Turn it up and it only gets better!

Led Zeppelin - That's The Way
(Sep 16, 2011 - 01:57)

Always liked this song and the album has other fine ones on it.  Someone said there's a mandolin on this one but I sure don't hear it.

You can hear it, especially on the left channel, when he sings the chorus - "That's the waaaayyyy."

Awesome tune! Love the feeling it draws out during the softer passages.

Cocteau Twins - Iceblink luck
(Sep 16, 2011 - 01:23)
Wow, that female vocalist from the Cocteau Twins sound just like Jane Siberry. You can hear her sing Calling All Angels here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev5byDGADKs

Track over to the 1:00 mark - that's where the vocals begin.

Little Feat - Easy To Slip
(Sep 15, 2011 - 13:50)
What a song!!! One of my all-time favorites.

Too bad it only got a short snippet on Almost Famous.

George is soooo missed in music today.

R.E.M. - So. Central Rain
(Sep 15, 2011 - 04:25)
A friend introduced me to this album shortly after it was released in '84. I kind of liked it at first but after a few listens I thought it was fantastic stuff! Ended up seeing them live 5 times starting with the Fables tours at the Commodore in Vancouver - Simply awesome!

Met them (except Peter Buck) after the Monster show in '95 at the Colosseum.

All their great albums were the early ones ending with Automatic For The People.

This one's a solid 8.

Joan Osborne - What You Are
(Sep 14, 2011 - 14:38)
I agree with the comments that the arrangement needs a few dynamic changes. However, a sparse arrangement may have chosen to showcase Joan's voice - and what a voice it is! Well, not just a great voice but she's a talented singer with beautiful vibrato! In the same league with Bonnie Raitt, Jane Siberry and kd lang.

Little Feat - Mercenary Territory
(Sep 13, 2011 - 04:30)
The album was very well recorded - sounds great on an audiophile rig, especially Spanish Moon!

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
(Sep 13, 2011 - 04:07)
Not a good singer. Poor control, terrible vibrato. Not likely to reach the top 25 on any talent show. But does sing with some emotion - I'll give him that.

K.D. Lang - Hallelujah
(Sep 13, 2011 - 01:40)
What's great about this version is that at least k.d. can sing - and very well. That itself makes it worth a 9. The other popular versions are also sung with emotion but certainly not sung well.

Her live version at the Vancouver Olympics was very moving.

Elbow - The Fix
(Sep 08, 2011 - 12:56)
I like the song overall but find the repeating six-note motif following the verses annoying. The album is fantastic - probably their best.

Guster - What You Wish For
(Sep 07, 2011 - 14:07)
 sronis wrote:

wow, such a contrast between a superlative-filled comment and the true quality of this song, which is mediocre at best. At least in terms of vocals (the singer's high notes are really bad), melody (simple and unimaginative), instrument playing (again, very simple) and mixing and production (flat sound, almost no changes in tempo). just boring...

That's just one way of looking at it. The success of a song to inspire or simply to bring a bit of joy does not depend upon the complexity of the arrangement or the degree of imagination involved. In fact some of the most-loved songs have very simple arrangements - think early Beatles, Buddy Holly, etc.

I have to agree with coloradojohn on this one even though this is the first time I've heard this song. The singer's high notes are not really bad, they are in key and well sung. The production may be have a bit of a flat sound due to its simplicity, but again, that doesn't prevent good songs from bringing joy to its listeners.

As an audiophile (of sorts) I enjoy well recorded, well produced, and oftentimes complex music through a true hi-end system, but at the same time, I can enjoy listening to a great song even through a clock radio. {#Smile}

Just my $.02 worth.

Bruce Cockburn - Wondering Where the Lions Are
(Sep 07, 2011 - 01:19)
Another great tune from the Dragon's Jaws. I would love to hear "Hills of Morning" as well - great guitar work, harmonies, and awesome band backing Bruce up.

Bruce Cockburn - Creation Dream
(Aug 30, 2011 - 17:53)
One on my all-time favourites! I've seen Bruce several times since the early eighties and always enjoyed his performances immensely. My wife and I last saw him in Mission BC in 2010. We managed to get backstage and ending up chatting with Bruce for about an hour and a half. Ten minutes in we felt we were talking with an old friend - he's just a regular guy who happens to be a phenomenal guitarist, song writer, poet.

During our conversation I mentioned kd lang covering One Day I Walk on her album and Bruce told the story about when they were both doing a radio program recently and sang that as a duet. kd asked him later about the verses in the song, "One day I walk in flowers, One day I walk on stones, Today I walk in hours, One day I shall be home." Apparently she didn't get it. Interesting she was unable to perceive the context. Nevertheless, I would have loved to hear them sing together.
