The Cure - Young Americans
(Sep 12, 2004 - 18:45)
Interesting take on a brilliant song. Bowie and The Cure are 2 of my faves, quite a treat.

Or perhaps because they were having fun on a song that they can afford to be experimental and different with... the sound sure goes with the lyrics! Never dropped before, but just from going to a few Cure shows one gets a glimmer of what "purple haze" must be like...

Again, find a fan, have them burn you a cd and actually listen to the Cure, they have much more talent than a moajority of the band out now, or the last 2 decades.

A haunting and original cover, as is their "Hello I Love You" cover and their "Young Americans" cover, though those are not as good as this one.

Disintegration is the last good Cure album IMHO, but Staring at the Sea is a great way to get a sample of their music spanning several albums. Even though I own all the albums, it's the one I always seem to pull out to play.

It's hard to say, "Pornography" for the dark and depressing, "The Head on the Door" for poppy cure, and the new album "The Cure" for a harder edged Cure. I however am in the minority and really like "Wild Mood Swings". Also, the new B Sides Box Set is pretty great.

Because it's a great song. Well, to be fair, ANY Cure song is a great song. I really can't understand how people can dislike The Cure, considering all the crap that is out there.
The Cure - Let's Go To Bed
(Sep 12, 2004 - 18:18)
The Cure wrote some of the most hypnotic, depressing and intelligent "goth" music of the 80's, as well as some of the most melodic and dancey "pop" music of the 80's and 90's for that matter whilst still retaining the intelligence. Robert Smith is a prolific songwriter, and has wrote some of the best music of the past 30 years. They jump from genre to genre seamlessly. This particular track was the begining of their "pop" stage, an amazing song. Never grows old

lol...that cracks me up. A) Kate Bush came into the music scene around 76 or 78, influenced many female artists and male artists as well, including Tori Amos. It was David Gilmour from Pink Floyd who really pushed her career and plays on a few of her albums. And B) One hit wonder? Eh? Pick up The wWhole Story, its about 15 hits and there were a few following that from The Sensual World and The Red SHoes, also check out Peter Gabriels "Don't Give Up" and "Games Without Frontiers".

Well, I went and read that review and the reviewer, Dean Carlson, seems to be suffering from that all-to-common disease among his ilk, that of being too clever to be fair. Claiming Remy Zero are trying to satisfy "the bland fans of Britney Spears cover bands" and calling Sting a "socially conscious Dune actor" is pretty pedestrian. He was basically showing off his meager talents as a writer, not reviewing the recording, so I don't take it too seriously.

Now, I have a 12 year old daughter. If you had a 12 year old daughter and this song was (hypothetically) getting a lot of airplay, would you want her listening to it several times a day while she did her homework in her room? It's not that I'm in favor of censorship. I emphatically am not. But I did want to point out that the lyrics to this song, while maybe referring to feelings PG was wrestling with but not indulging, are a fairly graphic depiction of a violent kidnapping by a misogynist lunatic. I find that "creepy."

lol, thats too funny, have you heard what is on the radio and on TV...I have never heard anyone worry about a Peter Gabriel song, Eminem perhaps, but Gabriel. ANyway, amazing song. This whole album has to do with the therapy he had. In fact the album is therapy.

When I hear he went through 3000 songs or whatever and the dreck on 'Up' was the best of the bunch, it got me wondering about how horrible the other 2990 songs were. Well, this is the first time I've heard this song, and it's far and away better than anything that's on 'Up', IMHO. So now I'm wondering what's going on in PG's head.

This song reminds me of Mercy Street from So. The Doors rock, I can't figure out what makes one person loathe something and the next adore and obsess. I don't obsess, but they are a damn fine band. I hate the term classic rock. Music is music, rock is rock, great stuff.

You know, I commented below about its greatness, but said it was not as good as PG 3 and Security. I actually need to revise that. This truly is his greatest album. Has yet to leave my cd player, and probably never will. I can't see how this music can be dissed. I suppose its an aquired taste. WHen I was younger, I hated eggplant with a passion, now, as I am older and wiser, and much more open, I love it. Its different and unusual, as is Gabriel. Give him a chance folks and you really will find how amazing this musician truly is. Yada yada yada, anyway. Peace

Wow, irst off, "Up" is not a bomb. ANd second, I don't see it as a grower either. That term has been used so many times for this album, and from the very first moments of "Darkness" I was hooked. Instantly a classic album right there with Security and PG3, my other faves. "Up" hasn't left rotation since Sept 24th 2002, and shall stay there forever I imagine.

I don't get it. I really liked POP...there are some great songs on there. Go beneath the techno beats and synths and you will find many great tracks. I love the synths BTW, bands need to mix it up. I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! It's so moving. This cd never gets old. I can't see how anyone can deny the beauty of this song. I run with this album daily, when this song comes on I feel this:

"Grasping for breath, but moving on with what feels like the speed of a train. The world around me is a blur, the sounds possess my body, I no longer have control. Red curb, American Flag made up of Christmas lights, sweat streaming down my face, lands on my lips, the saltiest taste that has ever touched my lips. i AM LIFTED UP OOF OF THE GROUND BY A HIGHER FORCE. The music swells and I am let go, falling and falling,my life rewinds from that moment, I can see all that had been, every horror, every moment of joy, every thing of beauty my eyes had ever set its gaze upon. Every orgasm, every sumptuous meal, every heavenly kiss. Smooth, naked, pale skinned bodies, sad homeless hearts, grammy, grampy, grandma and grandpa, gg and grandad, Katie and Daniel,Sean, Kathy, Misty, Dee Dee, mom, dad, all the loved ones, the people that have touched my heart and made my world sing, below a bright white light shines, I fall through and my breathe is gone, I feel crushed, my body being pushed through a soft fleshy wall, another light appears and the world slowly comes into focus, there are loving faces all around me, giants, pushing each other to lay their hands and eyes upon me. I relive this every evening, I wipe my brow and collapse onto the bed. All is well, all is grand"

Still, I love his new album and his music in general--especially Biko...

The "Growing Up" Tour was amazing. Yeah, he did all those things you speak of, and he did similar theatrics 20 years ago with Genesis, he wasn't trying to be hip, he was putting on a show. But everyone has their opinion, I found it to be a feast for the eyes and ears. And the album continues to amaze and never leaves the cd player.

Beautiful Gabriel song. I sang this for a High School audition for the musical Fiddler on the Roof, I got the part. Anyway, great song.

Hmm, I actually like it.
Live - Pain Lies on the Riverside
(Dec 14, 2002 - 12:34)
I agree. 10 in my book. An oldtime fave. Mental Jewelry brings back great memories. Such a wonderful, intense album. Doesn't get enough attention. Radio should start playing this album again, get Live back in the mainstream for their 6th album due out in MAY. Saw them a few months back, they still ROCK!!! Much better than any rock currently on the radio. They have become mainstream too, but always a step above I think. Much better than that Creed crap.
R.E.M. - I've Been High
(Dec 14, 2002 - 12:30)
This album does not get enough respect. Its perfect relaxing, bedtime music. Chill out REM. I love it. I used to play it at this gift shop I worked at in LA. Everyone said they loved it and actually shopped longer just to hear the whole thing. It takes time to seep in, but if you give it a chance its very subtle and will reward or Reveal its greatness. :) :D

When I grieve I often do become detached and distant. I think he has given up Grieving and wants release, which comes later in the song. You can't compare this song and Great Gig In the Sky. Two totally different, and great songs.

Too bad he didn't play this one in San Diego or LA, but both amazing shows.

ROCK ON PETER!!!!! I love this cd. 7 more days til I hear it live in San Diego, woo hoo. :D
U2 - Beautiful Day
(Dec 01, 2002 - 17:27)
How can one not like U2? I recently drove from LA to Santa Barbara to pick up a friend, she had U2's hits 1980-1990, I hadn't listened to U2 since my old roomate sold my U2 collection on me, anyway, we listened to it on the drive back. I have never had a better time belting and singing. Every song amazing. So I went and bought it and the new 1990-2000 cd. Yes U2 experimented, but never lost their signature sound. This new CD is a bit back to basics, I like that. "Beautiful Day" is a great song to sing and get lost in. I love it, and never tire of it. It gets me goin. I HATE commercial music. I don't find U2 commercial, all of you that find it overplayed and too commercial should stop listening to commercial radio then. I rarely hear this song, and that is because I avoid commercial stations. They are the best of the commercial. I can't figure out what people have against this song. Love Electrical Storm too, and the song from Gangs of NY. Has anyone heard Passengers, their collaboration with Brian Eno. Good stuff. Looking forward to summer 2003 when their new album is released. Rock on U2!!!

They are reuniting. They open in Santa Barbara in Dec, then will be playing some shows opening for Counting Crows, then they will be doing a 20 city tour next year. Go to www. glen phillips dot com. Check it out
Peter Gabriel - Burn You Up Burn You Down
(Nov 16, 2002 - 10:07)
Actually, I have a promo copy of up with this on it. Got it on e bay. Fits quite well actually, and one of my faves too.
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up
(Nov 16, 2002 - 09:44)
I got a rare demo of Up from e bay. This track IS slightly different, a bit longer. No Way Out( don't leave) was a bit different. Burn You Up, Burn You Down actually fits quite nicely on the cd, its a great tune. This one rocks, can't get enough.
Joseph Arthur - In The Sun
(Nov 09, 2002 - 14:55)
Peter Gabriel does a cover of this on the Prncess Di tribute cd. Its very very mellow and atmospheric. Different from this version, and very different from Petes usual work. Could you perhaps play Petes version?
Radiohead - I Might Be Wrong
(Nov 04, 2002 - 11:36)
Okay, Radiohead, great band!! Kid A/ Amnesiac, great albums, though I can't listen to them that often, always go back to The Bends or my personal fave Ok Computer. There is more to latch onto with those, Pablo Honey occasionally. Fave Radiohead song though is Talk Show Host. Looking forward to their future though.....

Let's face it: I am at work, and I'll take anything with a beat, a melody and decent vocals.

Um, Finn has been around since the early 80's, if anyone could be called sound a like it would be Radiohead, though, I don't see the comparison.

wHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Great album!!!

Wow, there are some strong opinions here. I appreciate both views. No this is not a political outlet, but whatever dude, let the guy speak. You don't agree. Now that everyone has agreed to disagree, what a great song this is :-)
Catherine Wheel - Eat My Dust

Great song, great band. Play something from Adam and Eve, great album. :) :D

Love this song.
Peter Gabriel - Signal To Noise

If you haven't done so, buy UP!!! Just give it a few listens...its a heavy door to open, but beautiful inside.

I think the door opened quite easily :-) I do not understand the debate (with the Gabriel fans that is) about Up, its not really that much of a difference from previous albums, especially if you love Gabriel 3 and 4(security), this cd has much to love for them as well as the So and Us lovers. This CD is achingly beautiful sometimes, danceable at others, uplifting, heartwrenching, haunting, passionate, powerful, artful, well produced (maybe to well) moving...not his best, that title goes to Sec and PG 3, and perhaps a future album (please) but is definitely amazing. I took to it instantly, there wasn't a doubt. From the opening discordant sounds of Darkness, I was hooked and intrigued, a big smile on my face "Gabriel is back" from a place he hasn't been since the early 80's. Seamlessly moving from Discordant and ugly to pin drop quiet and beautiful, all in one 7 min song. Its too bad BYUBYD didn't make the alkbum, I am sure it will turn up on I/O or a film soundtrack.
Peter Gabriel - Signal To Noise
(Oct 19, 2002 - 10:22)
I beleive its just right...and there is never enough Gabriel
Play some Lamb Lies Down...Perhaps Carpet Crwlers or the hilarious Counting Out Time. Peter is a genius and, well, nuff said. I have to add, he has made some missteps, not everything he does is brilliant, but, if you Gabriel haters actuially sat down and listened to his albums from begining to end, perhaps add in some Gabe Genesis, you may not love him yet, but could at least appreciate him. I can appreciate just about any music, I won't just dismiss it. I don't like country or rap as a rule, but I can appreciate much of it and listen to some. Everyone wants something different, something besides top 40, thats why many listen to RP, if PG is not different, what do you want?
Peter Gabriel - My Head Sounds Like That

All this hostility is really not needed. Criticize, but at least do it intelligently.

I don't beleive he was trying to break new ground, just to sing from the heart and make good music. Jeesh....

(Oct 11, 2002 - 12:12)
Toad the Wet Sprocket is still around, they are reuniting to play a show in LA with Counting Crows on Dec 10th, and yes, great song, though its one that isn't sung by Glen, and glen is my fave.
Peter Gabriel - Signal To Noise
(Oct 07, 2002 - 16:30)
Its a shame you can't at least appreciate this amazing song. There are songs that I hate as well, but I can always find something to appreciate in it. However, a work of art such as this song and this album at least deserves SOME praise. Listen to it closer. Give it a chance. Peters work will grow on you.
Kristin Hersh - Your Ghost
(Oct 07, 2002 - 16:24)
Great song, first heard this back in 95 in college. I sang this with my friend Tracee at a coffee house in Salem, MA
Toad The Wet Sprocket - P.S.
(Oct 07, 2002 - 16:23)
That is an odd comment. Most of Toads and Glens solo songs are dark and somewhat depressing, or like previously posted, intospective. Yes, they have a few happy ones, and quite honestly, I prefer their darker, slower songs, but please make an educated critisism. Listen to other Toad. :D
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up

What is all this about goats? Great song, amazing album. Everyone go and get it NOW!!!!
David Gilmour - There's No Way Out Of Here
(Oct 01, 2002 - 14:57)
I am a PF fan, never heard his solo stuff. Intense guitarist though, he was best vocally when playing off of Waters, love their voices together, switching versus. He sings on a few Kate Bush songs on the Dreaming and The Sensual World. Great stuff.
Kate Bush - The Big Sky
(Oct 01, 2002 - 14:53)
Its funny that you play Kate so soon after Gilmour, he helped jump start her career, along with Peter Gabriel. Gilmour plays and sings on a few songs on her The Dreaming" album as well as in The Sensual World on two tracks, one of which is one of her best songs. Check out both albums. The Dreaming is the female equivalent of Peter G's Security or Melting CD. The Hounds of Love is excellent, but not my favorite. Relistened to The Red Shoes lately, like it more over time, she is recording something new, lets hope she goes expirimental again like Peter G with his new one. I am all over the place with this post...sorry. Good song, but not her best.....
Starsailor - Love Is Here
(Sep 22, 2002 - 17:56)
Great song and a great album. I particularly enjoy Fever. Great driving song. This album is in constant rotation along with Coldplay, the doves and has anyone heard Vast. They have some great songs too. Keep the Starsailor coming, play "fever".

Their best cd, and an amzing song. They still write great songs, but none with the power of Mental Jewlery.

Great song, though not my fav from this album, which by the way is one of the best cd's to be released in years. Breathtaking! Check out Politik and the sweet Greeneyes.
Peter Gabriel - Growing Up
(Sep 17, 2002 - 17:11)
Very reminiscent of old Pg, but with a new millenium edge. No matter what style PG goes for, its always incredible. When I first heard it I wasn't sure what to think, but then I couoldn't stop thinking about it. Only one more week and I will have the album in my hands....waited 10 yrs for this. By the way, OVO and Rabbit Proof Fence are great too. Though PG doesn't sing enough on OVO.
Doves - Last Broadcast
(Sep 17, 2002 - 17:08)
This is an amazing album with a sound all its own, definately worth buying. This is one of many amazing tunes on the record. Try playing "Fridays Dust" or "Satellite", truly spine tingling
Peter Gabriel - My Head Sounds Like That
(Sep 17, 2002 - 17:03)
:D Can't wait to hear more of this album. Peter Gabriel is one of the greatest expirimental artist out there. And god, what a voice. Thank god for some originality. I met PG in 94 at Womad, I wanted to bow like the little yellow head...I'm not worthy....Oh, check out Elbow, they have a little PG mixed with Radiohead and Pink Floyd going
