John Hiatt - Crossing Muddy Waters

With very few exceptions, John Hiatt is my favorite artist. Saw him at the LB Day Amphitheatre in Salem, Oregon, and he played opposite Robert Cray and the late Stevie Ray Vaughn (who did a breathtaking set - RIP, Mr. Vaughn. Hold that guitar close, because you'll want it when you come back.) No matter what people say about JH - he's in my pocket. "Slow Turning," "Your Dad Did," "Drive South," "Memphis In the Meantime"...

I'm learning not to be so critical of a vocal, or a weird guitar part. If the music as a whole moves me, I'm just cuddly with joy.  And John Hiatt makes me cuddly with joy. Listen to "Your Dad Did" - especially if you have children, but even if you don't, you'll laugh at the lyrics, and might even relate to them.

God - good and bad, I just LOVE RadioParadise!{#Sunny}

Sarah McLachlan - Possession
(Aug 05, 2012 - 15:53)
I love this song. I loved it before I ever heard it was inspired by a stalker. I hear it and feel it as a deeply personal love song. I love the combination of the music, the liquid mercury of her voice, and the words themselves. The total package is a 10 for me. The only radio that I usually listen to in my car is NPR so this is never overplayed for me.  Thank you, Bill.

Having said what I did below, it looks as though the live version of this played less than 10 hours ago.

It is certainly okay with me but I can see how that might bug some people.

John Hiatt - Crossing Muddy Waters
(Sep 27, 2009 - 11:33)
My baby's gone and I don't know why
She let out this morning
Like a rusty shot in a hollow sky
She left me without warning
Sooner than the dogs could bark
and faster than the sun rose
Down to the banks on an old mule cart
she took a flatboat across the shallow

CHORUS:
Left me in my tears to drown
she left a baby daughter
Now the river's wide and deep and brown
She's crossing muddy waters

Tobacco standing in the fields
be rotten come November
And a bitter heart will not reveal
a spring that love remembers
When that sweet brown girl of mine
her hair black as a raven
We broke the bread and drank the wine
from a jug that she'd been saving

CHORUS

Baby's crying and the daylight's gone
That big oak tree is groaning
In rush of wind and a river of song
I can hear my true love moaning
Crying for a baby child
oh crying for her husband
Crying for that river's wild
to take her from her loved ones

CHORUS TWICE

Yes! There is so much good music out there and you only hurt yourself when you place arbitrary boundaries and limits and what you will or won't listen to. One of the greatest gifts the Grateful Dead gave me was an appreciation for the roots music of rock--country, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass. Don't forget that CBGB stands for "country, bluegrass, blues". There is amazing music in many non "rock" genres--and a lot of it still rocks. Don't tell me that just because an artist has a twang in his/her voice that they don't rock. Todd Snider rocks, James McMurtry rocks, Buddy and Julie Miller rock. Some of best guitar players are in Nashville and Austin. Open your mind and ears and some terrific stuff will pour in.

That you were an island and I passed you by
And you were an island to discover

Come on in

When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you so

And I crawl back into your open arms

Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me
(Mar 13, 2005 - 00:33)
Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain keep pourinÂ’ down
Me and billy standinÂ’ there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishinÂ’ rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there gettinÂ’ wet
With our backs against the fence

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it donÂ’t rain all day

Chorus:
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like jelly roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goinÂ’ home
And it stoned me

Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettinÂ’ dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me

Chorus

On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said hey! there you are

Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream

Venus Hum - Hummingbirds

Some of my favourite colours in the world
Beat against my eyelids with the blues of green hummingbirds
Some of my favourite colours in the world
Beat against my eyelids with the reds of pink hummingbirds
Blue Moon
So white
So scared
To come out tonight
It's too dark
For him
He's just a boy
With a man's grin
Crane and the swan-Wingspan across
Lake's silver light-The ivory night
Some of my favourite colours in the world
Beat against my eyelids with the blues of green hummingbirds
Some of my favourite colours in the world
Beat against my eyelids with the reds of pink hummingbirds
Godiva Girl
Swimming in chocolate
Winged foil heart cardinals
Oh but February stopped it
Red Bird
Scared white
She's just a girl
With a woman's smile

Where do you go little bird
When it snows, when it snows
When the world turns to sleep
Do you know, do you know
Is there something in the wind
Breathes a chill in your heart and life in your wings
Does it whisper 'start again'
Start again

Where is the sun in the night
Is it cold, is it cold
Does it feel left behind
All alone, all alone
Does it wander through the dark
Does it wait for the dawn, wish on a star
Does it stray very far
Very far

Where is your home restless wind
Is it there, is it here
Do you search for a place to belong
Search in vain, search in fear
Or is your spirit everywhere
Is your voice every tree
Your soul of the air
If there's no home is there no death
Is there no death

You can feel it down deep when it is done right.
Ben E. King - Stand By Me
(Dec 20, 2004 - 14:34)
This is a classic!
Thea Gilmore - Rags and Bones

Norah Jones - The Long Way Home
(Dec 12, 2004 - 09:46)

Pain and beauty are not mutually exclusive.

Such a beautiful way to break my heart...
Southern Culture On The Skids - Voodoo Cadillac
(Dec 10, 2004 - 18:12)
I wouldn't classify this as country at all.

I'm exhausted but here I am tapping my feet to this and wanting to move.

Gotta love that!
Coldplay - Warning Sign
(Dec 09, 2004 - 21:43)
Time, place, and circumstances can add dimensions to music that take a song from being merely good to suddenly becoming heartbreakingly poignant.

Such is the case with this one.
Crowded House - Never Be The Same
(Dec 08, 2004 - 19:38)
Thank you, may I have another?
Sarah McLachlan - Fallen
(Dec 07, 2004 - 19:11)
So much can change...

Timing.....

(Dec 07, 2004 - 04:58)
Bittersweet memories attached to Sarah now.

Always and all ways.

(Dec 06, 2004 - 21:15)
Entirely too appropriate for someone feeling so lost.

Exactly. :nodhead:
Ben Harper - Gold To Me
(Nov 29, 2004 - 05:30)
One of my favorites!

I've made mistakes in the past
But now I know the difference
from gold and brass...

Neil Finn - Turn and Run
(Nov 28, 2004 - 19:08)
I'd buy this.

Oh, wait, I already did!
Ben Harper - Steal My Kisses
(Nov 28, 2004 - 13:07)
This one is okay.

I like By My Side & Gold to Me better....
Got those...??
K.D. Lang - Helpless
(Nov 27, 2004 - 18:27)
I am a fan of both Neil and kd...
I like both versions.

Joe Cocker - Darling Be Home Soon
(Nov 26, 2004 - 19:20)
I like it!

Reminds me of uptempo southern gospel...
Lyle Lovett - Private Converstions (Acoustic)
(Nov 23, 2004 - 19:37)

(Nov 20, 2004 - 22:00)

Finn Brothers - Won't Give In
(Oct 31, 2004 - 16:06)
I like some other songs much better than this particular one.
But, having said that, I could listen to Neil sing about anything and be content.
Not everything can be the best....
There couldn't even be a best without the rest.
K.D. Lang - The Air That I Breathe
(Oct 31, 2004 - 10:29)
I think that this song does exactly what it is intended to do.
It conveys a message of absolute peace and contentment with life.
When you are with the right person and in the right moment...
There is a languid quality that comes after making love that this speaks to pefectly, for me.

And if that wasn't a TMI, then I don't know what is...
J.J. Cale - Crazy Mama
(Oct 27, 2004 - 21:22)
I love JJ...
This is one that I play frequently here at home...

The Highwaymen - Highwayman
(Oct 24, 2004 - 19:52)
Okay...the irony here is slaying me!
Loreena McKennitt just played before this...
And I said that it wasn't one of my favorite song of hers...but that The Highwayman is...

And here this is....totally different but....same name.

I love this place...and you are quite clever, Bill!
Loreena McKennitt - Marrakesh Night Market
(Oct 24, 2004 - 19:49)
I love Loreena's voice but this is not one of my favorite songs.
The Highwayman is one of my favorites.
Mark Knopfler - Coyote
(Oct 24, 2004 - 18:42)
I will listen to my share of this....and anyone else's, too.

She has a unique one.
It reaches right through my ears and into my heart.
Waifs - Flesh and Blood
(Oct 24, 2004 - 16:25)
I like it.
It is nice to hear songs that do not have to crowd every moment with vocals.
And she does remind me of Fiona, too...with some maturity behind it.
Toni Price - Comes Love
(Oct 24, 2004 - 15:47)
Lovely voice.
Reminded me of Peggy Lee...

(Sep 25, 2004 - 10:00)
Only one complaint - too short!
Jeb Loy Nichols - As The Rain
(Sep 25, 2004 - 08:37)
Not sure if it is just the mood of the morning or the blend of tempo and voice...
But I like this very much.
Neil Young - Helpless
(Sep 12, 2004 - 20:44)
I don't think that Neil has a particularly good voice but he definitely has his own style.
I find that he strikes a chord when I am feeling blue and his appeal is more than his voice, it is, perhaps, that you can believe he has traveled the road, waded in the pain bog, and lived to tell the tale...
Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat
(Sep 09, 2004 - 22:07)
This is very much a *sit in the dark, drink, and sob* kind of song.

Not that there aren't times when that is exactly what hits the Spot.
The desolation spot, that is.
Robbie Robertson - Broken Arrow
(Aug 20, 2004 - 09:27)
More emotional appeal than Rod.
You can just "feel" it when Robbie sings it.

I love listening to Sarah.
My favorite song of hers is Possession but I like this one, too.
Annie Lennox - Into The West
(Aug 20, 2004 - 08:35)
I love this song and her voice singing it.
It just seems to reach right in and touch your soul.

Perhaps, having had death close to home, I am overly-sensitive.
I can live with that.
Apocalyptica - Drive
(Aug 03, 2004 - 11:13)

Also agreeing - it was seamless...

Shannon McNally - Down and Dirty
(Aug 02, 2004 - 18:21)
I liked this.
It reminded me of Fiona Apple - Criminal
Crowded House - Private Universe
(Aug 02, 2004 - 12:43)
I was in the other room but recognized something that made me come look.
I can always listen to Crowded House.
A friend in Malta sent me Recurring Dream and I was hooked.
