John Hiatt - Crossing Muddy Waters (Aug 05, 2012 - 17:04) | Cynaera wrote:With very few exceptions, John Hiatt is my favorite artist. Saw him at the LB Day Amphitheatre in Salem, Oregon, and he played opposite Robert Cray and the late Stevie Ray Vaughn (who did a breathtaking set - RIP, Mr. Vaughn. Hold that guitar close, because you'll want it when you come back.) No matter what people say about JH - he's in my pocket. "Slow Turning," "Your Dad Did," "Drive South," "Memphis In the Meantime"... I'm learning not to be so critical of a vocal, or a weird guitar part. If the music as a whole moves me, I'm just cuddly with joy. And John Hiatt makes me cuddly with joy. Listen to "Your Dad Did" - especially if you have children, but even if you don't, you'll laugh at the lyrics, and might even relate to them. God - good and bad, I just LOVE RadioParadise!

Sarah McLachlan - Possession (Aug 05, 2012 - 15:53) | I love this song. I loved it before I ever heard it was inspired by a stalker. I hear it and feel it as a deeply personal love song. I love the combination of the music, the liquid mercury of her voice, and the words themselves. The total package is a 10 for me. The only radio that I usually listen to in my car is NPR so this is never overplayed for me. Thank you, Bill.

Aimee Mann - Save Me (Apr 02, 2010 - 17:59) | Heh.
Having said what I did below, it looks as though the live version of this played less than 10 hours ago.

There is so much good music out there and you only hurt yourself when you place arbitrary boundaries and limits and what you will or won't listen to. One of the greatest gifts the Grateful Dead gave me was an appreciation for the roots music of rock--country, folk, blues, jazz, bluegrass. Don't forget that CBGB stands for "country, bluegrass, blues". There is amazing music in many non "rock" genres--and a lot of it still rocks. Don't tell me that just because an artist has a twang in his/her voice that they don't rock. Todd Snider rocks, James McMurtry rocks, Buddy and Julie Miller rock. Some of best guitar players are in Nashville and Austin. Open your mind and ears and some terrific stuff will pour in.

i don't mind
put your elbows on the table

there's nowhere i'd rather be
secret fears
*the supernatural
thank god
for this new laughter
thank god

That I started looking for a warning sign
When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you so
A warning sign
It came back to haunt me, and I realised
That you were an island and I passed you by
And you were an island to discover
Come on in
I've gotta tell you what a state I'm in
I've gotta tell you in my loudest tones
That I started looking for a warning sign
When the truth is, I miss you
Yeah the truth is, that I miss you so
And I'm tired, I should not have let you go
Oooooooo
So I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms
And I crawl back into your open arms
Yes I crawl back into your open arms.

We make it home this place is a mess
The smell of cologne mixed with all that we own
Not much i must confess
I hold your hand as you slip from me
As i watch your breath i say to myself one day this will all end
And i look at you
You look at me
We're a real fucked up family
All night i feel it inside
But i know you're right as i begin to pack
Without raising your eyes i hear you sigh oh you'll be back

Van Morrison - And It Stoned Me (Mar 13, 2005 - 00:33) | Half a mile from the county fair
And the rain keep pourinÂ’ down
Me and billy standinÂ’ there
With a silver half a crown
Hands are full of a fishinÂ’ rod
And the tackle on our backs
We just stood there gettinÂ’ wet
With our backs against the fence
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Hope it donÂ’t rain all day
Chorus:
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like jelly roll
And it stoned me
And it stoned me to my soul
Stoned me just like goinÂ’ home
And it stoned me
Then the rain let up and the sun came up
And we were gettinÂ’ dry
Almost let a pick-up truck nearly pass us by
So we jumped right in and the driver grinned
And he dropped us up the road
We looked at the swim and we jumped right in
Not to mention fishing poles
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Let it run all over me
Chorus
On the way back home we sang a song
But our throats were getting dry
Then we saw the man from across the road
With the sunshine in his eyes
Well he lived all alone in his own little home
With a great big gallon jar
There were bottles too, one for me and you
And he said hey! there you are
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Oh, the water
Get it myself from the mountain stream

Breathes a chill in your heart and life in your wings

Does it feel left behind
All alone, all alone
Does it wander through the dark
Does it wait for the dawn, wish on a star
Does it stray very far
Very far
Where is your home restless wind
Is it there, is it here
Do you search for a place to belong
Search in vain, search in fear
Or is your spirit everywhere
Is your voice every tree
Your soul of the air
If there's no home is there no death
Is there no death

I love Harry Manx.

Sweet advice! Thank you! :D

Aimee Mann - Save Me (Feb 18, 2005 - 22:28) | Sweetly sad or is that sadly sweet?
She could have crawled right out my head with this one.
|
Grant-Lee Phillips - See America (Feb 18, 2005 - 19:38) | What a slender thread I've been clinging to
All these cracks for me to slip into
So pefectly fitting for my mood.
More, please?

Crowded House - Into Temptation (Feb 14, 2005 - 21:06) | preacher wrote: This is really nice on a Saturday morning...goes well with a hot cup of coffee.
Equally lovely on a quiet Valentine~less evening.
|
Harry Manx - Crazy Love (Feb 06, 2005 - 19:31) | Okay, I love Van Morrison. He seems to sing to my heart at times. He can take me from carefree to wanting to cry in a heartbeat.
But, that being said, Harry Manx sings to something else entirely. I can't say it is exactly my libido but I can't say it isn't either. He touches me.
And Crying isn't what he makes me want...
|
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Feb 06, 2005 - 17:32) | I don't think that anyone will ever capture the raw emotions of this the way that Johnny does.
|
Iguanas - 9 Volt Heart (Feb 04, 2005 - 16:45) | I'd heard this by Dave Alvin and loved it but I have to admit that this one is nice, too. Their voices are nothing alike yet they both infuse feeling and mood into the words and music.

Jesse Cook - Fall at Your Feet (w/ Danny Wilde) (Jan 30, 2005 - 19:28) | anthom wrote: Of course it's a good song - it's kinda hard to foul up one of Neil's classics.
I don't know about that flamenco-style noodling in the background, though. It kinda makes the song sound like background music for the "multicultural" store at the mall that sells rain sticks and Zen rock gardens.
Exactly!
I heard this in a cool cultural shop in Old Sacramento and asked to see the cd cover. I recognized the vocals immediately but nothing else. I love Crowded House and this was certainly putting an original twist on a favorite song.

May be thinking about the song, "Into Temptation," which has pretty much the same subject matter (temptation/adultery). Just a guess.....
Nope. I know the difference and the lyrics are a dead giveaway.
I must have just received it from someone labeled with the wrong artist.
I like it no matter who sings it.
And I love Crowded House even if they don't sing it! :D
|
Leonard Cohen - The Future (Jan 17, 2005 - 15:54) | He just has THE voice.
He IS the voice.
I never saw that movie but, trust me, he could be doing the soundtrack to my life sometimes.
|
Joan Osborne - Make You Feel My Love (Jan 17, 2005 - 15:31) | I don't think that this is even close to as good as Trisha Yearwood does it.
Wasn't this in the movie Hope Floats?
I love the song and it's okay here.
But you can feel it right down to your toes with Trisha.
|
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Nature Boy (Jan 09, 2005 - 12:38) | And she moves among the flowers
And she floats upon the smoke
She moves among the shadows
She moves me with just one little look
*sigh*
Wonderful!

Iron & Wine - Love and Some Verses (Jan 09, 2005 - 09:05) | Platypus wrote: not bad, but i just don't think it lives up to all the hype.
Having heard no hype at all - I am, happily, not disappointed in the least.
I like how easy it fits into my mellow Sunday morning.

|
John Hiatt - Lift Up Every Stone (Jan 08, 2005 - 17:30) | The really good southern gospel had such soul and movement in it that you could NOT sit still.
This is a perfect example of that toe-tapping, hip-checking, amen'ing beat!
|
Travis - Re-Offender (Jan 08, 2005 - 10:19) | I like this more and more every time I hear it.
Are the other songs on the cd like this?
*Poised to purchase...*
|
Train - Mississippi (Jan 07, 2005 - 18:31) | Hmmm...It even sounds a good bit like Meet Virginia.
Good song if you're already in or looking for a mellow mood.

|
Tom Hall - Paris Rain (Jan 05, 2005 - 06:19) | Hmm....one more than hears the Clapton similarities.
Really kickin' beat....and the lyrics are telling a story!

It's on my computer but maybe it is labeled wrong! I have been know to be wrong (lots)....I did look up their offical discography and did not see it there. That now makes 2 songs that are both Crowded House that I have that are not on their list.....but they both sound J U S T like them.
Hmmm.....

Kate Wolf - The Redtail Hawk (Dec 29, 2004 - 11:25) | jpfueler wrote: I love watching redtails soaring.....as well as red shoulders, kites, and falcons
As a side note....the red tail is the most succesful of the pirds of prey.
A true pleasure to watch here in northern California.
That alone makes this song lovely for me...that I like it musically as well is just icing on the cake.
|
Neil Young - Harvest Moon (Dec 29, 2004 - 06:10) | Life is imperfect and it is often that which is most flawed that is most beautiful.
No, Neil does not have a classical voice - but he speaks to me.
And I hear what he's saying.
Anyone not understanding that will never *get* his appeal and that is their loss not mine.

Creedence Clearwater Revival - I Put A Spell On You (Dec 28, 2004 - 23:11) | I can follow the sequence in the names (playing this right after John Lee hooker's Spellbound) but I can't help but think that musically there would have been better CCR songs to choose from.
imho, of course....

Just a nice flow for a slow moving Sunday morning coming down.
So sue me. I like this.
|
Beck - Beautiful Way (Dec 11, 2004 - 20:01) | I like the mellow smoothness of this.
Pain and beauty are not mutually exclusive.
Such a beautiful way to break my heart...
|
Coldplay - Warning Sign (Dec 09, 2004 - 21:43) | Time, place, and circumstances can add dimensions to music that take a song from being merely good to suddenly becoming heartbreakingly poignant.
Such is the case with this one.

Ben Harper - Gold To Me (Nov 29, 2004 - 05:30) | One of my favorites!
I've made mistakes in the past
But now I know the difference
from gold and brass...
|
Taj Mahal - Corinna (Nov 11, 2004 - 13:52) | I really like voices with character.
Like this...
JJ Cale
Van Morrison
Joe Cocker
|
Finn Brothers - Won't Give In (Oct 31, 2004 - 16:06) | I like some other songs much better than this particular one.
But, having said that, I could listen to Neil sing about anything and be content.
Not everything can be the best....
There couldn't even be a best without the rest.
|
K.D. Lang - The Air That I Breathe (Oct 31, 2004 - 10:29) | I think that this song does exactly what it is intended to do.
It conveys a message of absolute peace and contentment with life.
When you are with the right person and in the right moment...
There is a languid quality that comes after making love that this speaks to pefectly, for me.
And if that wasn't a TMI, then I don't know what is...
|
The Highwaymen - Highwayman (Oct 24, 2004 - 19:52) | Okay...the irony here is slaying me!
Loreena McKennitt just played before this...
And I said that it wasn't one of my favorite song of hers...but that The Highwayman is...
And here this is....totally different but....same name.
I love this place...and you are quite clever, Bill!
|
Mark Knopfler - Coyote (Oct 24, 2004 - 18:42) | I will listen to my share of this....and anyone else's, too.

Waifs - Flesh and Blood (Oct 24, 2004 - 16:25) | I like it.
It is nice to hear songs that do not have to crowd every moment with vocals.
And she does remind me of Fiona, too...with some maturity behind it.
|
Jeb Loy Nichols - As The Rain (Sep 25, 2004 - 08:37) | Not sure if it is just the mood of the morning or the blend of tempo and voice...
But I like this very much.
|
Neil Young - Helpless (Sep 12, 2004 - 20:44) | I don't think that Neil has a particularly good voice but he definitely has his own style.
I find that he strikes a chord when I am feeling blue and his appeal is more than his voice, it is, perhaps, that you can believe he has traveled the road, waded in the pain bog, and lived to tell the tale...
|
Leonard Cohen - Famous Blue Raincoat (Sep 09, 2004 - 22:07) | This is very much a *sit in the dark, drink, and sob* kind of song.
Not that there aren't times when that is exactly what hits the Spot.
The desolation spot, that is.
|
Sarah McLachlan - Fallen (Aug 20, 2004 - 08:59) | I love listening to Sarah.
My favorite song of hers is Possession but I like this one, too.
|
Annie Lennox - Into The West (Aug 20, 2004 - 08:35) | I love this song and her voice singing it.
It just seems to reach right in and touch your soul.
Perhaps, having had death close to home, I am overly-sensitive.
I can live with that.

I can always listen to Crowded House.
A friend in Malta sent me Recurring Dream and I was hooked.
