Neko Case - I'm An Animal (Mar 13, 2009 - 08:17) | Every Neko Case album is awesome and her latest is no exception. This is a wonderful track.
Sun Kil Moon - Glenn Tipton (Nov 23, 2008 - 18:37) | Great song from THE best album, so far, released in the new millenium. Koz is a supremely talented musician.
The Beatles - In My Life (Nov 21, 2008 - 07:43) |
jimbaca wrote: This song inspired me to write this short poem:
Many changes my life has seen The bleakest winters and summers so green Springtime promising new life, autumn it's end Throughout it all, many lovers and friends Precious times and memories Sometimes filled with joy Sometimes blue All of these things, none so dear to me As you
This song is about as good as it gets. Very nice.

The Police - Driven To Tears (Nov 03, 2008 - 07:53) | Ahnyer_Keester wrote: So could anyone do a decent cover of this today? Who? It strikes me as a song begging to be covered.
Pearl Jam has covered this song - and done a pretty good job of it too.

World Party - Is It Like Today? (Oct 22, 2008 - 08:54) | chiggins wrote: I woulda thought it was from a Kinks album I hadn't heard if I hadn't seen the title.
Good call. It does sound a bit like a Kinks tune.
Eddie Vedder - Society (Jun 03, 2008 - 12:58) | Great song. Great soundtrack. Great movie. Incredible book. Get, watch, read.
Ani Difranco - Little Plastic Castle (May 29, 2008 - 15:02) | This isn't even better than the stuff she used to sing with her kin - The Difranco Family. "Heartbeat" is better than this swill.
Gary Numan - Cars (May 28, 2008 - 08:21) | Cool song. Its Kraftwerk as interpreted through LOW-era David Bowie.
Blur - Beetlebum (May 23, 2008 - 07:54) | eastcoast wrote: I doubt if the self indulgent Mr. Cobain would have much cared for meeting Mr. Lennon despite all the ridiculous comparisons that are made. Remember Mr. Lennon was killed by someone else's gun.
Please. Lennon was pretty damn self-indulgent himself. "Bed-in"???
Sun Kil Moon - Gentle Moon (May 08, 2008 - 10:12) | GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY is the best album of the last 5 years imo.
Bill, please play more Sun Kil Moon!
David Bowie - Always Crashing in the Same Car (May 01, 2008 - 08:51) | Great song from perhaps the most groundbreaking album of the 1970s. I recommend anyone who has not heard LOW in its entirety to do so asap. Amazing album. And this song is even better within the context of the album as a whole.
Bob Dylan - Hurricane (Apr 28, 2008 - 14:24) | Rubin Carter, wrongfully accused on a triple murder or not, was a bad guy. Read about him on Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rubin_Carter
I like the song but not the subject of it.
Eddie Vedder - Rise (Apr 18, 2008 - 14:05) | This song is probably my favorite tune from 2007. Amazing song. Very moving.
Stevie Wonder - Living For The City (Apr 16, 2008 - 13:08) | DoctorHooey wrote: This song is so awesome but that bit in the middle is just plain silly.
Agreed. I wish that weren't in there.

R.E.M. - Bang and Blame (Apr 11, 2008 - 11:46) | REM were my favorite band up until MONSTER. They ran out of ideas and this clumsy song is an example.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Apr 11, 2008 - 11:34) | bizon wrote:
I'm not a real fan of either but I think that Dave Grohl is a much better song writer than Kurt Coabain. For the drummer of such an iconic band to come out with his own, write all the music and consistently pump out good, catchy pop rock tunes, album after album, year after year, is pretty incredible. I doubt that Nirvana would have had much of a shelf life, had Cobain not blown his head off.
Grohl is a very good songwriter but Cobain was at an entirely different level. Its not even a comparison. Cobain changed the landscape of music with his songs.
Not much of a shelf life for Nirvana??? Cobain's suicide did not suddenly propel him into the spotlight. Cobain was THE rock icon of the 90s - before he ever shot his face off. When he commited suicide it was a gigantic deal b/c of who he was and what he represented. Nirvana's albums still sell to new kids every year. And I have no doubt they always will.

Great tune.

Sorry, a harsh opinion but just mine.
Foo Fighters don't compare to Nirvana. Cobain wrote amazing songs whether you you found him to be a whiny irritant or not.

The Who - Eminence Front (Apr 01, 2008 - 14:04) | This is one of only two 'great' truly great Who songs post-Keith Moon. The other being "You Better You Bet".
Buffalo Tom - Soda Jerk (Apr 01, 2008 - 12:04) | In an alternate, i.e. better, universe, this song would have been a #1 hit. Great power pop.
Eddie Vedder - Hard Sun (Mar 31, 2008 - 12:46) | Wonderful song from a great film. Vedder did a great job with the soundtrack.
David Bowie - Heroes (single mix) (Mar 28, 2008 - 13:08) | Of all the songs recorded during Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, this is the greatest. Bowie, Eno, Visconti, and Fripp did this one in its entirety at Hansa Studios in Berlin near The Wall.
Absolutely stunning.
Steve Earle - I Feel Alright (Mar 28, 2008 - 08:30) | A very good song from back when Steve was more concerned about writing a great song than espousing left wing politics.
And this songs kicks ass.
Edie Brickell & New Bohemians - Circle (Mar 25, 2008 - 07:59) | Love this song and the whole album. I remember seeing Edie & New Bohemians at Mcalister Auditorium at Tulane University in '89 as they were touring for this album. Great show.
Eddie Vedder - End Of The Road (Mar 24, 2008 - 15:19) | Good song but there are at least 5 other tracks from this album that blow this one away. "Ride" is a good place to start.
Joe Jackson - Steppin' Out (Mar 24, 2008 - 14:06) | Saw Joe jackson in concert 2 weeks ago at the Schiller Theater on Bismarkstrasse in Berlin, Germany. AMAZING show. He opened with an altered version of "Steppin' Out". His new album, RAIN, is fantastic.
Pearl Jam - Daughter (Mar 24, 2008 - 14:03) | Love this song. Great memories of the early 90s when rock was still important in the mainstream.
U2 - One (Mar 07, 2008 - 06:58) | Pretty incredible song. Was this recorded in Belin? What studio?

My wife and I are major Old 97's fans and we went to The Empty Bottle for a beer as a tribute to this great song when we were in Chicago a couple of years ago. And, by the way, The Empty Bottle was indeed half empty when we were there.
Sarah McLachlan - Possession (Jul 05, 2007 - 14:19) | As per Sarah herself, this song is written from the point of view of a stalker. Sarah was being stalked by a wacked out guy who was sending her letters which expressed the things being said in this song. Her frightening experience is what led her to write this song.
That being said, I love this song. The best version is the piano/vocals hidden track version at the end of FUMBLING TOWARDS ECSTACY.

Peter Tosh - Mystery Babylon (Jun 13, 2007 - 14:37) | Good tune. Talented dude.

The Verve - Lucky Man (Jun 07, 2007 - 08:03) | Wow - The Waterboys, The Sundays, followed by The Verve. You gotta love Radio Paradise. Thanks Bill!
"Lucky Man" is a classic song from a classic album.

Waterboys - Strange Boat (Jun 07, 2007 - 07:57) | A great song from a classic album. The Waterboys were one of the best bands ever. The real deal.

Son Volt - Medicine Hat (Jun 04, 2007 - 07:30) | Great song from a very underrated album. TRACE gets all the attention, and no question it is an awesome album, but WIDE SWING TREMELO is seriously good as well.

Crowded House - Pineapple Head (Jun 01, 2007 - 08:08) | formersnowbug wrote: When I was 14, my friend Geneva came with my parents and me to Dallas. She and I went to Six Flags. That night, after dark but long before closing, she and I were waiting in line for some roller coaster, and there were tv screens in each corner playing videos to entertain you as you waited. (And the wait for this particular ride was, like, an hour.) We were sitting on one side of the rail with our feet on the other when the video "Don't Dream It's Over" came on. We had spent most of our money, and we were young and free and girls. We were hot and tired and just sat there, waiting and listening. I don't think I've ever been more content in my whole life. For years, that song would instantly transport me to 1988, to Dallas. As I get older, and contentedness is harder and harder to come by, I've found that any song with his voice will do.
One of the best posts I've ever read. And I can identify with precious moments like that.

Donovan - Hurdy Gurdy Man (May 29, 2007 - 15:22) | I quite like this song though I loathe Donovan. Well, he did father Ione Skye. So that's 2 good things.

Red House Painters - Song For A Blue Guitar (May 15, 2007 - 09:33) | This is not bad but if you want to hear great Mark Kozelek music listen to his next band, Sun Kil Moon, and the album GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY. Its a bona fide classic that was released in 2003. Bill, please play tracks from that album. Listeners would love it.

One of those places was Athens, GA...a town where I spent many nights jamming to bands like Pylon, R.E.M, and the B-52's.
The Clash have informed and influenced my taste from that point - from the new wave/alternative of the '80s to the indie rock I listen to today.
Great post.

Son Volt - Windfall (May 10, 2007 - 08:08) | A classic song from one of the best albums of the 90s. A definite 10.
R.E.M. - World Leader Pretend (May 08, 2007 - 08:18) | One of the better songs off of GREEN. Good choice Bill.
Apparently some guys here in New Orleans dig this song so much they named their band World Leader Pretend. They're actually a pretty good band too.
Steely Dan - Bodhisattva (May 07, 2007 - 07:02) | Heard Steely Dan play this song live yesterday (as the encore song)at Jazz Fest here in New Orleans. It was even better live than on record.
The Beatles - In My Life (May 04, 2007 - 21:32) | I couldn't disagree with anyone who calls this the greatest pop song ever written.
The White Stripes - Icky Thump (Apr 26, 2007 - 09:01) | Jack White needs a drummer. Mo Tucker would be a huge improvement over poor Meg White. The novelty of her drumming has worn off - if it was ever appealing.
The Lightning Seeds - A Small Slice of Heaven (Apr 26, 2007 - 08:53) | Lightning Seeds fun fact: they got their name after misinterpreting the lyrics to Prince's "Raspberry Beret". They heard "the thunder drowns out what the lightning sees" as the lightning seeds.

Totally agree with this. I really wish Skunk was still with them to give them that guitar edge they've missed since then.

Joni Mitchell - Coyote (Apr 26, 2007 - 06:53) | There are few artists who can match Joni's artistic greatness. Great song from one of the all-time great albums.

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky (Apr 23, 2007 - 09:22) | I like the music a lot on this but Jeff Tweedy's voice has changed so much over the years - for the worse.

Steely Dan - Aja (Apr 23, 2007 - 07:43) | I generally don't like music that is this slickly produced but Steely Dan is the exception. Great song.

Steely Dan - Do It Again (Apr 16, 2007 - 15:33) | A great tune worthy of RP airplay despite having been played a lot on FM radio since the 70s.
Pearl Jam - Indifference (Apr 16, 2007 - 08:01) | Great song. Pearl Jam has taken so much crap over the years - much of it totally unfair.
Nick Lowe - Peace, Love And Understanding (Apr 13, 2007 - 13:19) | All these years and this is the first time I've ever heard the original version of this song. Completely love EC's cover but I have to say I love this almost as much.

PJ Harvey - Down by the Water (Apr 11, 2007 - 07:10) | Polly is one of the greatest female rock n roll artists ever. So talented. This is a very good tune but its not even one of her better tracks. Strongly suggest to anyone who is unfamiliar with her to pick up any album by her.
The Verve - Bitter Sweet Symphony (Apr 10, 2007 - 14:16) | Didn't like this song when I first heard it all those years ago but when I heard the rest of this incredible album it grew on me big-time. One of the best bands of the 90s and one of the most underrated bands in rock n roll history.

Carole King - So Far Away (Apr 10, 2007 - 11:36) | Great song from a classic album. Reminds me of a certain girl from a certain time.

Tom Petty - Feel A Whole Lot Better (Apr 10, 2007 - 10:30) | Brings back great memories of riding around Washinton D.C. in the spring of '90 with my best friend with the top rolled down.
Uncle Tupelo - Still Be Around (Apr 10, 2007 - 06:53) | Easily one of Jay Farrar's finest songs. Truly moving lyrics with a wonderful acoustic guitar melody. And those classic Farrar vocals.
Bob Marley - Concrete Jungle (Apr 09, 2007 - 13:42) | The guitar solo is by American musician Wayne Perkins, isn't it? If I recall correctly, Perkins had never even heard any reggae music prior to playing on this track. He just sorta winged it. Did a great job too.
Indigo Girls - Closer To Fine (Apr 04, 2007 - 12:56) | I had only just graduated from college when this song was released. Very fitting tune. And fun tp play on guitar.
The whole album is excellent.
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (Apr 04, 2007 - 06:53) | I remember hating this song in the 80s when I first heard it. To say that it has grown on me since then is an understatement. And I just bumped it up from an 8 to a 9.. Excellent production on this one especially considering it was released in the production challenged 80s.
Prince - When Doves Cry (Apr 02, 2007 - 09:07) | I was a huge Prine fan from 80-87 as many people were. This song is definitely one of his very best creations. The classical sounding synth solo and the bad-ass guitar solo are amazing. Too bad he stopped making music of this quality after Sign O' The Times.

You mean The Jayhawks want THEIR riff back from Petty - i.e. "Waiting For The Sun" came out over a year before Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance". The Jayhawks opened for Petty as they toured for HOLLYWOOD TOWN HALL and Petty heard this tune every night. Safe to say he was a little influenced.
And while I truly love Petty its not the 1st time he "borrowed" from an opening act. In the late 80s The Replacements opened for TP & The Heartbreakers. One of The Replacements' songs, "I'll Be You", had the lyric "a rebel without a clue" in it. well on Tom's next album he used that exact same lyric on one of the hit singles from that album.

Steve Earle - Transcendental Blues (Mar 30, 2007 - 13:10) | ty wrote: I saw Steve Earle in a small theatre in Colorado just before the 2004 presidential election. While he was very fired-up, his singing was incoherent, and his internal rage made a mess of the show. He released his frustration with the current administration at his fans by repeatedly swearing at us, and calling us "fucking lazy" for not voting and not protesting.
I like Steve Earle's music. I am not a wealthy industrialist who has sold congress and the presidency and shipped Amercia's jobs to foreign countries.
I also share some of Steve's sadness and anger with the direction the US government has taken us, but I guess he didn't know that when he was yelling at me. I bet there were very few neo-conservatives in his audience, but he attacked us like he was performing at the Republican Convention.
And when he broke a string during "Jerusalem", I worried that the blood vessels in his lungs or brain were not up to the task, or that he might kill his guitar tuner.
Steve Earle could be a powerful voice if he would learn from the great revolutionary speakers that unified people rather than insulting them. It might also help if he would open his mouth when he sings.
Lighten up, man. I voted.
Yeah the guy's a total prick. Not surprising he's been married so many times. I happen to agree with Steve regarding abolition of the death penalty but he's such a jerk-off when he talks about it I'm prone to wanting to disagree with him. He's made more enemies than people he's converted I'll bet.
Tom Petty - Don't Come Around Here No More (Mar 30, 2007 - 11:50) | I didn't like this song back when it was released (probably b/c it was such a departure what with the sitar and all) but it grew on me tremendously over the years. Really dig it now.
Elliott Smith - Waltz #2 (Mar 29, 2007 - 08:16) | What a talent this guy was. So sad how he ended his life. His music will definitely live forever.
The Bangles - A Hazy Shade of Winter (Mar 29, 2007 - 08:11) | This is a kick-ass cover by a band that made a great debut album then sadly devolved into commercial hell. This song was an example of how they could be really great when not making Egyptian dance songs.
Son Volt - Action (Mar 29, 2007 - 07:58) | I like the music but not Farrar's vocal on this. And that's strange b/c there was a time 10 years ago that I thought Farrar had one of the best vocal deliveries around. Smoking must have done something to his voice since then.
U2 - In God's Country (Mar 29, 2007 - 06:48) | Just a beautiful song by a band that is at its best when it wears its heart on its sleeve like this.
Third World - 96 Degrees In The Shade (Mar 28, 2007 - 21:40) | Wow, can't believe I'm hearing this song on RP. This was the song that got me to appreciate reggae music and shortly thereafter discover the greatness of Bob Marley. Thanks Third World.
Stevie Wonder - As (Mar 28, 2007 - 21:33) | Man, its been a long time since I've heard this song. Sounds even better than I remember. Stevie was on a creative high at this point in his career.

James Gang - Funk #49 (Mar 28, 2007 - 13:48) | One of the all-time great balls out rockers. Always great to hear this one.

Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend (Mar 28, 2007 - 10:46) | miguel1220 wrote:
Kim Novack?... I'll have to go find the darn jewel case now..lol
As I recall its Tuesday Weld.
Matthew Sweet - Girlfriend (Mar 28, 2007 - 10:38) | Such a phenomenal song! Sounds just as great as it did back in '91 when I first heard it. Tasty guitar playing. GIRLFRIEND is definitely one of the best albums of the 90s and the title track is one of the best songs off of it.
David Bowie - Golden Years (Mar 28, 2007 - 09:12) | Pleasant enough but not one of my favorite Bowie songs.
Factoid: Elvis Presley, shortly before he died, expressed interest in covering this tune.
Wilco - Kamera (Mar 28, 2007 - 09:03) | I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is one of the most overrated albums in history. That being said this is a helluva song - my favorite from YHF.
Jimi Hendrix - Angel (Mar 28, 2007 - 08:04) | Great song. You can hear Prince's "Purple Rain" in Jimi's "Angel" imo.
Peter Gabriel - Biko (Mar 28, 2007 - 07:28) | Such a powerful song. Brings tears to the eyes. Peter Gabriel is truly an amazing artist.
Wilco - Someone Else's Song (Mar 27, 2007 - 16:19) | marmelock wrote: This is GOOD Wilco.. Not like the 'YHF' or 'A Ghost Is Born' crap...
My sentiments exactly.
This song is brilliant in its simplicity. Tweedy, you need to get back to this instead of the Krautrock influenced stuff of late.
Lucinda Williams - Hot Blood (Mar 27, 2007 - 13:04) | I love Lucinda (and the rest of this album) but this song is positively wretched. Whoever advised her to keep that high register vocal should be drawn and quartered.
Johnny Cash - Hurt (Mar 27, 2007 - 12:04) | Its amazing that someone who released so many classic tunes in his storied career just might have topped them all with this incredible song released at such a late stage.
Jimi Hendrix - 1983.. (A Merman I Should Turn To Be) (Mar 27, 2007 - 09:23) | Great Jimi tune. I've always noticed that many professional guitar players cite this song as their favorite Hendrix tune. That surprises me a little but no arguing the greatness of the tune.
Billy Bragg & Wilco - California Stars (Mar 27, 2007 - 07:01) | horstman wrote: but quite honestly, I don't need some Brit telling me to vote Ronald Reagan out of office. Dumb republican idiot appealed to an even dumber American republic.
Yeah we would have been better with 4 more years of Democrat Jimmy Carter, don't you think? Carter did such a wonderful job - inflation over 20%, 4 hour gas lines, the Iranian hostage situation (yes, the Middle Easterners were pissed at us during a Democratic regime), national morale at an all-time low, the nation's military competence at an all-time low.
I love this song.

Hardly.. could be their best. Most tunes from it are REM classics in their own right, and this one is no exception.
By the way, the woman singing is from the B52's.
Could be their best? Do you have Murmur, Reckoning, Life's Rich Pageant, Fables Of The Reconstruction, or even Automatic For The People?
Out Of Time has the following weak songs on it: "Shiny Happy People", "Radio Song", "Near Wild Heaven", and the boring "Low". With those songs on it there no way it could ever be REM's best. Doesn't touch the other REM albums mentioned - though as I said "Me In Honey" is awesome (along with "Country Feedback" and "Belong").
David Bowie - Heroes (single mix) (Mar 26, 2007 - 18:11) | Incredible song written and sung by a brilliant artist and produced by another genius - Eno. Bowie talked about he and Eno recorded this song in Berlin on a PBS History of Rock n Roll special about a dozen years ago. It was amazing what they did in the studio.
R.E.M. - Sweetness Follows (Mar 26, 2007 - 15:04) | 99 wrote:
If you truly want to be an REM snob then you can't like any album post Murmur.
Nah, to be a true REM snob you just can't like anything they released after signing to Warner Bros -only the IRS stuff is considered lovable. I guess I'm not a true REM snob since I do love Automatic For The People - I think its a genuine classic album - but I also only think AFTP is the only great album they ever released after they signed to Warner Bros.
Tom Petty - Angel Dream (No. 4) (Mar 26, 2007 - 12:50) | Great song from a great album. I even liked the movied though I know most people don't.
Question: I heard that Petty sued someone regarding this soundtrack - what was that about? Anyone?
The Shins - Black Wave (Mar 26, 2007 - 08:36) | While this is not my favorite song from Wincing The Night Away its still a wonderful track.
The Band - Stage Fright (Mar 23, 2007 - 13:23) | This was an original, unique group if there ever was one. Never been a group like them - before or since. Elvis Costello has said as much. 4 singers, 3 songwriters, everyone switched up their instruments and roles in the group frequently, they didn't follow the musical trends of the day.
And this song is amazing.
Peter Murphy - Cuts You Up (Mar 21, 2007 - 15:37) | Great song. The vocals are amazing. Remember when MTV's 120 Minutes used to play this video quite a bit. The good old days.
Euphoria - Fire In The Hole (Mar 21, 2007 - 15:17) | Leo Kottke meets Led Zep. I like it though I do find myself wanting to hear some wailing vocals.
Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street (Mar 21, 2007 - 14:16) | Luv, luv, luv this song! Great memories listening to this as a kid in the 70s. The production is much cleaner than I would normally care for but the melodies are amazing. Dave Grohl and The Foos did a cool cover several years back where they changed the lyrics from "give up the booze and the one night stands" to "give up the crack and the one night stands". Nice!
Led Zeppelin - Nobody's Fault But Mine (Mar 21, 2007 - 13:47) | I love that this great Zep tune has been added to the RP playlist. Page's guitar hook is a doozy on this one. Serious drumming from Bonzo as well.
Nick Drake - One Of These Things First (Mar 21, 2007 - 13:33) | Its great to see Nick Drake getting more and more popular with each passing year. Should've happened in his lifetime but at least people are catching on now.
Phil Keaggy - County Down (Mar 21, 2007 - 09:26) | Wow, this is truly beautiful. Never heard of this artist before but I'll have to check him out.
Siouxsie & the Banshees - Kiss Them For Me (Mar 21, 2007 - 09:20) | Love this song. Brings me back to the days of the 120 Minutes and Post-Modern MTV shows. Back when MTV was still playing at least some quality music.
U2 - I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (Mar 21, 2007 - 09:16) | meydele wrote: I always find this song uplifting. It never fails to raise my spirits. Snark that if you will, but it still is as true for me today as it was when I first heard it lo these many years ago.

Neko Case - If You Knew (Mar 21, 2007 - 08:32) | Another wonderful Neko tune! Thanks Bill.
Neko's voice is as great as it gets.

Sting wrote the melody and guitar line for this song. I know its Andy playing guitar on the album but Sting composed that music on guitar.

Pearl Jam - Black (Mar 14, 2007 - 09:24) | Love the version of this song found on PJ's greatest hits album from 2004. Much less production sheen.
Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Mar 14, 2007 - 08:47) | I still remember when this album was released and MTV(!) played the video for this song. It was such a breath of fresh air from all the overproduced 80s stuff out there at the time. Love Margo's voice.

Neil Young - Helpless (Mar 13, 2007 - 15:03) | Welly wrote: Neil is a god. Period.

The Crowes are going to go down in history as quite possibly the last great rock and roll band. What you hear in this track is only a tiny taste of the mind-boggling talent possessed by these guys. Check out amorica and Lions if you want the REAL Crowes.
Agree with all of this except the Lions recommendation. I'd choose Amorica and Southern Harmony And Musical Companion as their greatest albums.
Jayhawks - Wichita (Feb 20, 2007 - 15:14) | This song and the album it comes from has the most beautiful harmonies ever.
Mazzy Star - Fade Into You (Feb 19, 2007 - 22:06) | Great tune. Still remember hearing this one on WTUL, Tulane University's radio station, back in '93 on a car ride home at about 3:00 am. Perfect tune for one of those late night/early morning drives.

Neil Young - Dont Let It Bring You Down (Feb 11, 2007 - 23:29) | This song is pure greatness. It takes a rare and special talent to create a song as beautiful as this one.
One of my all-time greatest concert memories is seeing Neil perform this song as the final encore in a May 1999 solo acoustic tour in New Orleans. Wish I had a bootleg of that show and especially that song.
U2 - Desire (Jan 30, 2007 - 20:16) | This song still rocks after all these years.
The Police - Message in a Bottle (Jan 18, 2007 - 22:43) | This song is greatness - lyrically and musically. Love Copeland's drumming on this track. And a really clever melody by Sting on guitar.
The Who - Baba O'Riley (Nov 30, 2006 - 20:31) | The very best song from one of the top 5 albums in the history of rock n roll.

Great song btw. She's looney tunes but this was when she could at least still write a great song.
James - Laid (Nov 29, 2006 - 21:35) | I've always dug this tune. Bit of a guilty pleasure.
Mazzy Star - Blue Flower (Nov 27, 2006 - 22:36) | Still remember the first time I ever heard this great song - on WTUL (Tulane University's radio station) way back when. Still a very moving song.
Nick Drake - Road (Nov 27, 2006 - 22:34) | Nick Drake could do some wonderfully complex fingerpicking and this song is an great of an example as you'll ever hear.
U2 - Walk On (Nov 27, 2006 - 22:30) | Just a beautiful song - the best from All That you Can't Leave behind.
R.E.M. - Sweetness Follows (Nov 27, 2006 - 00:38) | A great song from a classic album. AFTP is the best album by REM since they left IRS. Out Of Time may have sold more units that AFTP but Automatic is decidedly better.
Jay Farrar - Different Eyes (Nov 25, 2006 - 22:47) | RobK wrote: Not to be neg but he blows Jeff Tweedy out of the water in my opinion.
Completely agree. Tweedy doesn't hold a candle to Farrar. He does have a great publicist however.
Yannick Noah - Simon Papa Taba (Nov 25, 2006 - 12:08) | This is beyond bad. In fact, its even worse than Noah's forehand. I remember Noah saying in the 80s that his musical hero was Bob Marley. Bob is turning over in his grave after hearing this monstrosity.
Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Child (Slight Return) (Nov 22, 2006 - 16:58) | Quite simply, rock n roll doesn't get much better than this. The man was a genius guitar player. Definitely, as Pete Townsend has said, an alchemist of sound.
Ryan Adams - New York, New York (Nov 22, 2006 - 14:15) | lmic wrote: Every generation needs their John Cougar Mellencamp!
Seriously.
Ryan, while frequently a jerk, is musically far beyond what Mellencamp ever did or could hope to do. Ryan's work in Whiskeytown alone makes him a special artist.
Phil Lesh asked Ryan to perform with him on stage and asked Ryan to play Jerry Garcia's guitar on a bunch of Greatful Dead songs - a rare honor by Phil. Mellencamp won't ever be getting that call.
Sting - Mad About You (Nov 22, 2006 - 14:08) | This was the last great song Sting ever wrote and recorded. A pity.
XTC - Grass (Nov 20, 2006 - 23:07) | XTC are truly masters of pop music.
U2 - All I Want Is You (Nov 19, 2006 - 06:43) | U2 have written so many great songs over such a long period of time. And this is definitely one of their great ones.
Pearl Jam - Alive (Nov 18, 2006 - 22:01) | Mugro wrote: Overplayed or not, this was a classic song from a classic album that defined a generation.
This album and Nirvana's breakthrough album (with Smells Like Teen Spirit leading the way) were albums that revolutionized the way we thought about music. It broke music programming into "alternative" and "classic rock".
In Boston, we all listened to WBCN. In the 80s, it was very common to hear the Beatles, Pink Floyd, the Cars and Boston in the average hour of music, with a little U2 mixed in for good measure. We were happy with this and did not feel that the music that we were listening to was tired or old. Then came Pearl Jam and Nirvana and they blew the doors off the traditional format. You can't call yourself progressive anymore when you play this stuff and then try to go back to playing the Beatles.
WBCN turned into "Alternative Rock" instead of just "the Rock of Boston". It was 1991, and there was no looking back.
Ironically, today in 2006, we look back on Pearl Jam as the Led Zeppelin of our time. Classic rock. Been around forever. This album broke in 1989, which is now 17 years ago. A lot like in 1987 listening to Let It Be (released in 1970).
Sounds like it is time to turn the clock forward again folks and find the new music revolution. Who will it be?? Better come quick because the natives are restless!
Great post. One correction though: TEN was released in 1991, not 1989.
Yep, definitely one of those songs that takes you back to a specific time and place in the world.
Old 97s - Broadway (Nov 12, 2006 - 00:15) | Love the Old 97s!. Definitely one of the best live bands out there. TOO FAR TOO CARE is a great album and "Broadway" rocks.
R.E.M. - Walk Unafraid (Nov 12, 2006 - 00:10) | Just cannot get into any REM post-Bill Berry. This is a bad song.
Anders Osborne - Had My Reasons (Nov 08, 2006 - 21:58) | fcatalao wrote: never ever heard of this guy before. good stuff
Anders is a legend here in New Orleans. He's originally from Sweden but visited New Orleans sometime in the late 80s or early 90s, fell in love with the city and its music and never left. You really need to check this guy out live. His guitar playing is smokin'.

You know nothing of what you are talking about here. Nothing.
And I'm no Bush fan.
This song is, and always has been, great.
R.E.M. - New Test Leper (Feb 25, 2006 - 09:04) | This song is very similar to an earlier REM song - "Try Not To Breathe". Breathe is much better imo.
Cat Power - The Moon (Feb 09, 2006 - 22:45) | This is the first thing I've heard by this heavily hyped artist - and I'm not impressed. What's the big deal?
Howard Jones - No One Is To Blame (Acoustic) (Jan 23, 2006 - 17:25) | Great song. I always thought Howard Jones came along at the wrong time in music history. Too often his music was diluted by that crappy 80's production style. This version of No One Is To Blame is rightious. Btw, I met Howard at JFK airport several years ago. Very cool guy. He seemed a little sad though.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Jan 22, 2006 - 01:51) | Thank God for this song and this band. It helped rid the earth of the hairband crap. And it made real rock relevant again. The bottom line on the Seattle/grunge era: those bands (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam) mattered. And they will contiue to matter to each new generation of rock n roll fans. The early 90s were a great time for rock music. When rock bands like the aforementioned groups released a record it was a big deal, an event. That's really the last time you could say that. Since 1998 its been crap pop or crap rapcore dominating the charts. And the great rock bands are relegated to almost underground status compared to the Brtneys and the Limp Bizkits and Stinkin Parks of the world.
U2 - God Part II (Jan 19, 2006 - 12:27) | Fantastic song from a very underrated album.
Gillian Welch - One Little Song (Jan 19, 2006 - 01:52) | Such a great little tune. Gillian is an amzing talent. Can't wait for a new album from her and David.
Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink (Jan 17, 2006 - 15:18) | Love this original version of Pretty In Pink. The Psych Furs were an unbelievable band in the 80s - especially live.
Ryan Adams - Cold Roses (Jan 11, 2006 - 22:26) | Great song. Ryan Adams is undeniably talented and this song is one of the examples of that. Too bad he's a whacked out loon.
The Replacements - I Will Dare (Dec 21, 2005 - 16:14) | This is one of the greatest songs of the 80s by the best songwriter of the last 20 years - Paul Westerberg.
R.E.M. - She Just Wants to Be (Dec 21, 2005 - 16:10) | This is so bad. hard to believe there was a time 15 years ago when REM was my favorite band bay far. O how the mighty have fallen.
Son Volt - Route (Dec 20, 2005 - 21:39) | Great song from TRACE, one of the 5 best albums of the 90s imo. Farrar at the top of his game here.
Ryan Adams - Easy Plateau (Dec 20, 2005 - 08:27) | This is a great song that's about as far removed from Chris Isaak as you can get.
Big Head Todd & The Monsters - Bittersweet (Dec 19, 2005 - 22:33) | Great song. Have always loved this band (seen 'em live 3 times) but love them even more now because they are playing the house Of Blues in New Orleans in February - one of the 1st bands to book N.O. post Hurricane Katrina. Thanks guys.

The disc is the single most overrated album is the history of pop music. Not bad mind you but no way the masterpiece most would have you believe.

Beta Band - Dry The Rain (Dec 15, 2005 - 16:00) | Cusack digs it and so do I.
"I will now sell a copy of The 3 E.P.s by The Beta Band."
Jimi Hendrix - Drifting (Dec 15, 2005 - 15:59) | Great song. I always thought Prince nicked from this tune when he came up with Purple Rain.
Jayhawks - Clouds (Dec 13, 2005 - 06:40) | Please play more Jayhawks! They are an incredible band.
R.E.M. - Me In Honey (Dec 03, 2005 - 17:34) | An excellent song from an otherwise below-average album. This tune is a good memory from the early 90s.
English Beat - Best Friend (Dec 03, 2005 - 12:56) | The English Beat are one of the most underrated groups of all time. Excellent song as usual from the Beat.
Pearl Jam - Black (Nov 14, 2005 - 16:34) | Great song from back in the day. My only complaint with this song is the production and the sound of the drums. Too crisp.
The Clash - Train In Vain (Nov 07, 2005 - 22:34) | I'm a huge Clash fan and I know Train In Vain is not very representative of their sound bit I have always loved this tune.
Pete Yorn - Turn of the Century (Nov 06, 2005 - 11:46) | This is actually a very cool song. Not a lot of Pete Yorn I like but this is one. His Springsteen cover from a few years back is definitely another.
Sarah McLachlan - Hold On (Nov 05, 2005 - 21:22) | I heard Sarah do a solo acoustic version of this song once and it kicked this versions' ass.
The Band - Atlantic City (Nov 05, 2005 - 21:21) | ANNE_MARIE wrote:love this tune....so great to hear The Band on RP! thanks!

Ryan Adams - Easy Plateau (Aug 26, 2005 - 07:39) | This is a great song. RA is a jerk but also a very talented artist. Phil Lesh wouldn't have asked Ryan to tour with him if he weren't.
Richard Ashcroft - Brave New World (Jul 04, 2005 - 22:47) | Not a bad song. I might want to get this as I was/am a huge Verve fan but does any of the album rock? An entire album of this would get very old very quickly.

How did the media destroy Nirvana? Their legacy as one of the all-time great bands is still very much intact. No one destroyed Nirvana because the music is too powerful. Cobain, as a person, is ultimately a sad figure but the music he created is amazing.
Pet Shop Boys - West End Girls (Jul 04, 2005 - 22:28) | Saw an interview withe the 5 stars of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy - they said this was their all time favorite song. And those guys are supposed to have great taste. I can't stand this song. Nasally, whiny vocals.

Wilco - Kamera (Mar 22, 2005 - 23:59) | I think Yankee Hotel Foxtrot is an overrated album but this is definitely a great song.

Johnny Cash - Hurt (Mar 22, 2005 - 23:56) | This is one of the best songs of the last 5 years.
Belly - Gepetto (Mar 10, 2005 - 00:28) | Nice. A fine tune from back in the day.
Beck - E-Pro (Mar 02, 2005 - 16:30) | This song kicks ass! Another classic tune by Beck fo sho'.
Son Volt - Loose String (Jan 10, 2005 - 22:43) | Wow - my all-time favorite Son Volt track! SV kick butt! I'm glad Jay Farrar is doing a new Son Volt project even though its with three new members.
Bill, please play this wondeful song more. And more SV while you're at it.
Kennedys - Life Is Large (Jan 08, 2005 - 23:49) | I saw these guys live about 5 years ago and they were amazing. That being said, this song is weak and sounds nothing like they did when I saw them live. Boring pop.
Pink Floyd - Fearless (Jan 02, 2005 - 22:48) | I've always been lukewarm at best towards PF but this is a great tune for sure! Surprised I've never heard this one before.
Youssou N'dour - Chimes of Freedom (Dec 27, 2004 - 01:32) | Saw him first perform this tune on the '86 Amnesty International Tour with Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, and Sting. Great stuff.
Wilco - Kamera (Dec 26, 2004 - 20:25) | I like Wilco but don't consider myself a "true believer" however this is a really great song. Great vocal melody.
Tom Petty - Breakdown (Dec 25, 2004 - 09:46) | Classic tune by one of the very best in the history of rock n roll. TP has so many classic songs at this point its unreal.
Uncle Tupelo - New Madrid (Dec 23, 2004 - 15:21) | A classic tune from one of the best bands of the 90's. More UT, Bill! In fact, more Son Volt, Jay Farrar solo, and Golden Smog while you're at it. Thanks for playing this!
James McMurtry - Good Life (Dec 11, 2004 - 12:18) | James is a great live performer. Good tune.
P.S. James' dad, Larry, just released a new novel.
R.E.M. - Talk About the Passion (Dec 11, 2004 - 12:15) | A classic song from a classic album! Too bad no one makes records like this anymore - including, in fact especially, R.E.M. Love the beautiful guitar playing by Pete Buck and the indecipherable vocals by young Stipe.
R.E.M. - Final Straw (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:59) | Listening to this song makes me wish Stipe's vocals were still as unintelligible as they were on Murmur. Having grown up on R.E.M. it just sounds strange to me to hear Stipe enunciate this clearly.
Indigo Girls - Land Of Canaan (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:48) | Hearing this brings back great memories of Fall 1989 and just graduating from college. In fact, I saw Indigo Girls at Tipitina's in New Orleans in September '89. Great show , great time with my friends. Those first 4 IG albums are awesome.
Richard Thompson - Sibella (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:45) | RT is an amazing artist but this is just an average tune by his high standards. Bill, please play "Calvery Cross" or "Heart Needs A Home" by RT.
Billy Bragg & Wilco - California Stars (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:42) | Love this song. One of Wilco's best for sure. This song is way too good for Billy Bragg to have had much to do with it. Bragg's music is the absolute worst. The best Billy Bragg song is worse than the worst Yoko Ono tune. Bragg's politics are a joke also - not the part about gays or women but rather the fact that he is for the redistribution of wealth.
The Beatles - All You Need Is Love (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:35) | One of my favorite tunes ever! I love towards the fade how Paul tips his cap to "She Loves You". In that movie LOVE ACTUALLY, it was pretty cool how they played "Love Is All You Need" as the recessional song of the wedding scene.
Pearl Jam - Yellow Ledbetter (Dec 08, 2004 - 16:32) | Pearl Jam should take a good listen to this song and try to remember what its like to make quality music. Great song.
The Beatles - Rain (Dec 07, 2004 - 23:24) | More props to McCartney for his awesome bass playing on this one.
Lightning Seeds - My Best Day (Dec 07, 2004 - 23:08) | This band has a cool name - especially how it came to be. Word is they were listening to Prince's "Raspberry Beret" and the part where he sings "thunder drowns out what the lightning sees" was mistakenly heard as "lightning seeds" by the band. And the rest is history. A little bit anyway.
The Beach Boys - God Only Knows (Dec 05, 2004 - 23:06) | This is simply one of the greatest pop tunes ever written. And I'm not that much of a Beach Boys fan but this song is just greatness.
Cowboy Junkies - Powderfinger (Dec 05, 2004 - 23:04) | I'm surprised at all the negativity aimed at this tune. I love this version of one of Neil's great songs.
R.E.M. - Belong (Nov 20, 2004 - 15:00) | One of REM's best tunes. No doubt. REM should give tunes like this a listen and then compare them to the songs from their last 4 albums and they'll hear how crappy they've become.
The Beatles - Tomorrow Never Knows (Nov 15, 2004 - 00:10) | This is one of the songs that sets The Beatles apart from the rest of the pack. Amazing song that shows how incredibly creative those 4 guys were. This track is way, way ahead of its time.
Eastmountainsouth - Hard Times (Nov 15, 2004 - 00:04) | Great song. Does sound a lot like NOMADS INDIANS SAINTS era Indigo Girls - and that's a good thing.
Jayhawks - Waiting for the Sun (Nov 14, 2004 - 23:22) | Tony, Tom Petty, whose music I really dig, totally stole this tune from The Jayhawks. Petty's "Mary Jane's Last Dance" was released a couple of years after The Jayhawks' "Waiting For The Sun". In fact, The Jayhawks opened for TP & The Heartbreakers in 1992 and, obviously after listening to "Waiting For The Sun", Petty wrote "Mary Jane's Last Dance" for his greatest hits album.
Blind Melon - Change (Nov 12, 2004 - 15:22) | Great tune by a great band. Shannon Hoon had some serious personal issues but the guy was a very talented artist.
The Bangles - Walk Like An Egyptian (Nov 10, 2004 - 18:12) | This is a bad tune. If you are going to play The Bangles, play "Going Down To Liverpool", "Dover Beach", or "Hero Takes A Fall" - great tunes from their 1st album. They turned ultra-cheesy after that unfortunately.
The Smiths - How Soon Is Now (Nov 07, 2004 - 15:26) | "How Soon Is Now" was about 20 years ahead of its time. Brilliant song with amazing production.
Old 97s - The New Kid (Nov 06, 2004 - 23:01) | Definitely one of my favorite bands of the last 10 years. "The New Kid" is one of the better songs off of their latest album.
Lucinda Williams - Can't Let Go (Nov 06, 2004 - 14:27) | Lucinda is as great a singer/songwriter as there is for the last 15 years. This a another from a long list of great tunes by her.
Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit (Nov 02, 2004 - 21:50) | I still remember the first time I ever heard this tune. Heard it on my local college radio station (WTUL) while driving and immediately pulled over and went into the nearest record store (The Mushroom). Hummed the tune for Mike and he hooked me right up. The rest as they say is history. A great memory.
The Verve - Lucky Man (Nov 02, 2004 - 21:47) | God, I wish The Verve were still together. "Lucky Man" is one of my favorites of theirs. The Verve were one of the best bends ever.
Billy Bragg - Sexuality (Nov 02, 2004 - 14:19) | Billy Bragg's music is as bad as it gets. I think I'd rather listen to Yoko Ono than this drivel.
Ryan Adams - Wonderwall (Nov 02, 2004 - 11:54) | I'm surprised at the negative comments on this one. This is a great reworking of a good tune. I'm not a big Oasis fan but "Wonderwall" is definitely (maybe) an excellent pop tune. And Ryan's cover gives it a whole new flavor. Ryan's guitar playing is really good on this.
PJ Harvey - A Perfect Day Elise (Nov 02, 2004 - 01:06) | Fantastic tune! PJ Harvey is one of the all-time greats imo. She gets compared to Patti Smith (whom I love) but I think PJ is even more brilliant. Play more PJ!
Cracker - Low (Nov 02, 2004 - 00:16) | A blast from the days of golden era alternative nation.
Indigo Girls - Become You (Nov 01, 2004 - 21:11) | I totally agree with Roverfish - the Indigo Girls were never as good after NOMADS, INDIANS, AND SAINTS. This song is fairly lame.
Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (Nov 01, 2004 - 21:09) | This was the first song I ever heard by Kate. It won me over as a lifelong fan. What's Kate up to these days?
Beck - Lost Cause (Nov 01, 2004 - 21:08) | This is a great song and what's truly amazing is that its not even one of the 3 best songs on the album.
Neko Case - Stinging Velvet (Oct 31, 2004 - 14:19) | Neko's a huge talent. And, having seen her perform live, I can tell you that the voice is the real deal. Great tune.
David Bowie - Heroes (single mix) (Oct 09, 2004 - 20:09) | Awesome song! Fripp did an amazing job with the production on this tune - especially on Bowie's vocals. Classic Bowie for sure.
The White Stripes - Ball And Biscuit (Oct 09, 2004 - 10:26) | I wish Jack White would get himself a drummer - and maybe a bass player and keyboard player while he's at it. He could be really great if he ever actually surrounded himself with people who can play beyond the kindergarten level of musicianship.
Blind Melon - Soul One (Sep 12, 2004 - 21:49) | This is one of the most incredible acoustic tunes ever! A real heartbreaker for sure. Shannon Hoon was a very talented bro.
Badly Drawn Boy - Something To Talk About (Sep 11, 2004 - 12:21) | Love the song, the soundtrack, the book, and the movie. ABOUT A BOY was the best film of 2002 for my money. And the book is indeed a great read with an entirely different slant than the movie chose.
Son Volt - Windfall (Sep 05, 2004 - 22:24) | "Windfall" is one of the handfull of best tunes of the entire 90's. It's perfect.
R.E.M. - Country Feedback (live) (Sep 02, 2004 - 00:19) | One of R.E.M.'s best tunes in the 90's. And oOne of the few tunes they released in the 90's that sounds incredible live.
Richard Ashcroft - Brave New World (Aug 25, 2004 - 22:37) | Just shows me that the people who voted were yellow dog Democraps, Now the term "yellow dog Democrap" can be updated to "dead guy Democrap". They deserve the dead sob to be propped up in a chair making their important decisions.
