They play him a lot on radio shows such as, "Music From the Hearts of Space" and such. I got turned onto him by a syndicated radio show in the U.S. named "Quiet Music" that airs Sunday mornings on a local jazz/NPR station. See http://www.quietmusic.com/about.asp. Another PT song I've never heard before from an album I've never seen before - they must have some discography. Good stuff as ever, a little more mellow and less grungey than their later material in Deadwing and Fear of a Blank Planet. 7 from the Nottingham jury, and once again a big thanks to Becky and Bill for introducing me to this stunning band.

I hear ya on the lyrics to this tune, a bit more interesting than some of his other songs, but musically I just find it below the quality of mind numbing. Thanks though for your comment because it made me revisit the words to this song and see that there was something to it that would spark interest for some, and helps me understand what Cave is about beyond his usual fake stagecraft, that maybe there's more artistry to him than I thought, though beyond one or two songs I doubt I could get past his dreary musical approach, and his hideous subject matters.

I find his guitar playing trite and repetitive. He has one tone, and though it's a GOOD tone... come on. Variety is nice... even a little.

There is as much difference between Mexican and Cuban music, as between Cesaria Evora and REM musical genres.

None of the members of the Buena Vista Social Club - who are/were all Cuba citizens - ever seeked the "privilege" to immigrate in the US. They used to play their music from La Habana, Cuba with the inspiration they probably could not get if they were in the US as immigrants - legal or not - and working by the American show business commercial rules. They were approached by Ry Cooder several years ago and before some eminent members passed away. They organized an international tour that included the Madison Square Garden and recorded several albums of great musical interest. Worth going to your local public library and dig in their rarities.

it's interesting musically and I'm sure it was groundbreaking for its time. However musically it really doesn't appeal to me, as far as the opera part, there's real operas I enjoy more, same goes for the rock part.

My favorite thing about this cut is how it delivers objectively upbeat lyrics with such morose singing and lugubrious instrumentation.

To me that constitutes an auditory irony. Either it's a funny and wry joke, or it is a depiction of a depressed mood in which one remembers having felt better and is trying to recapture that, but totally in vain.
