"I was raised up thinking I was unique..."
I knew I had to know the rest... As a forty-five year old who is struggling with a life-changing illness and a second-career "dream job" gone terribly sour, these lyrics speak directly to me.
"...And now after some thinking, I'd say I'd rather be a functioning cog in some great machinery serving something beyond me.
But I don't, I don't know what that will be.
I'll get back to you someday soon, you'll see." Yes music speaks to us and sometimes custom made for us to hear!

Rare Earth - Get Ready (Apr 01, 2011 - 10:23) | This is good and all...but I've been "bob-ma-tised" by having to listen to an oldies station 24/7 at my last job so I am tainted for life. YUCK.

Please DON'T put us through his self important dronings again! You gotta include all those Christians in that rant as well Screature.....aren't they always hammering into us what God wants, does, says? Believe in our God or we'll kill you? Idiots....

Anna Ternheim - I'll Follow You Tonight (Mar 07, 2011 - 12:26) | I am sure this can be a little down and depressing for most people, but I love this girl and her lyrics. A little downslide for a follow up to the Spinners though....
|
Spinners - I'll Be Around (Mar 07, 2011 - 12:24) | Didn't believe what I was hearing. Too Commercial, this gets played on the easy listening stations too much (which I have had to endure at work endlessly). |
The Waifs - London Still (Jan 18, 2011 - 16:12) | Yes, very Sheryl Crow and Rickie Lee, I'm 50/50 cause I don't like either one of them. I'm not crazy about it......but say London to me and I'm there!

|
Jenny Lewis & the Watson Twins - Melt Your Heart (Oct 20, 2010 - 11:28) | This might be a sweet little ditty.....but it has no substance...and its a little boring. Its a song for a child. Gillian Welch - Caleb Meyer (Dec 06, 2009 - 10:52) | Well all the replies on my comment were very interesting.
First off, yes, I know the difference between Country (wide category) and Folk (sub category). Everyone listening to this station knows the quality and diversity of music played here. That is why we listen.
Its not that I don't think this artist is a talented singer.....and I have said before Bill does a great job at really playing a wide variety of great artists. My comment expressed that too much of this genre of music is played on RP. I think what I said was a fair comment of my opinion, NOT of the artist. There is so much more good music out there, and Bill is a master at finding it.
Enough said.

|
Po' Girl - Old Mountain Line (Nov 09, 2009 - 08:07) | Songs like this are one reason I have not listened to RP as much as I use to. Can we do without this hillbilly folky stuff? Too much of this style is played on RP.
|
Enya - Orinoco Flow (Nov 05, 2009 - 10:49) | I am an Enya fiend......so I am still listening to RP right? Wow......but there are better songs, course this does fulfill the commercial aaspect most people seem to want.

Grizzly Bear - Ready, Able (Sep 16, 2009 - 11:43) | Unusual, at first I thought oh no another David Byrne song....but then when they started the reverb, I realized it wasn't him and really took notice.

Having said all that, I still like Cat and his music. I agree that it's a shame he was indoctrinated into thinking he had to stop making music. Here Here and Huzah on those comments!!!!!!

I don't want to say it's religious. I'm sure "Greenman" implies nature and such. But it's a pretty corny tune.
You obviously understand nothing about this group. They are deep but quirky, simple English lads living in the country but all the while being intricately complicated and very aware of the world.
Thanks Bill for playing this-more XTC!!

Jethro Tull - With You There to Help Me (May 04, 2009 - 16:55) | fredriley wrote: This track coming on prompted me to mute and switch to iTunes where I've got a bunch of Levellers tracks. That's modern folk rock, not the dated Jethro Tull effort. Mind you, they were sure big in the day, a veritable supergroup, such that Ian Anderson made enough money to buy himself a very nice, pricey hideaway on the Isle of Skye. I never really got into them even then, although I was amused by the album cover with the fake newspaper on :o) Considering you joined RP in 2006 you should know better and know Bill and his wide scoped taste by now. Mind you, I have to mute a time or two that is just some horrid song...but hey the pros far outweigh the cons on RP

David Bowie - Wild Is The Wind (Mar 19, 2009 - 15:49) | Dear RP....while I once cherished this radio station above all others for its propensity to play obscure and unusual songs, I really hope and wish that you would loose your infatuation with Talking Heads, David Byrne and David Bowie because it just drags down the entire ship.

Oh! So sorry...you obviously must not be familiar with their music. They are highly talented and imaginative. Nice smooth beats on this one with some excellent vocalists!
Bill, thanks for adding this to the playlist. Call it eclectic.
|
Azam Ali - Abode (Oct 15, 2008 - 16:18) | I bought this entire CD through RP/Amazon the minute I heard the first track Bill played. Love it.

|
Al DiMeola - Mediterranean Sundance (Oct 07, 2008 - 11:59) | I know this would not seem a good follow up to this beautiful song...but try "helpless hoping" by CSN&Y.....or did I hear that ON RP????

I sooo agree, no offense to Ms Parton who is a great little talent...RP doesn't need country or banjo anything!!
|
Tori Amos - Space Dog (Sep 26, 2008 - 15:37) | Amazingly enough, a Tori Fan I AM NOT...but this isn't half bad in the beginning...then she ruins it in the middle of the song.
|
Fleet Foxes - Your Protector (Sep 26, 2008 - 10:40) | Bill, thanks for playing the other stuff from these guys, because the first one or two songs I heard were just not showing this bands style. Hear a little Jackson Brown voice in there?
|
Midge Ure - Dear God (Sep 23, 2008 - 09:25) | Ironic...I am listening to this song and the previous one by Camper Van Beethoven-(Might Makes Right) as I am looking at 34 pictures of India, where there are Monsoon victims and refugees and fighting between Hindu & Christian, soldiers and protesters and many other images of unrest and attempts at peace in a restless world.
Pretty cool pictures http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2008/09/scenes_from_india.html

Space - Neighbourhood (Sep 20, 2008 - 14:43) | After the snooze of Norah Jones.......this make's me get up out of my coma! Play more from this CD.
|
Neil Young - Long May You Run (Sep 20, 2008 - 12:08) | This must be the live set.......I have to say, as much of an old Neil fan I am, it doesn't follow Bowies Heroe's very well. The mixing on those seemless seques seems to have gone away for a long time now.
|
Midnight Oil - Antarctica (Sep 18, 2008 - 19:52) | Wow, in all my listening, I have never heard this! Great.....play this and something else from Midnight Oil....interesting.

|
Joni Mitchell - Coyote (Sep 10, 2008 - 17:58) | Still cannot help but love Joni, because it always takes me back to a better time...even her depressing songs. This one is such classic Joni!
|
Yes - Roundabout (Sep 09, 2008 - 13:55) | Have always just missed this when RP plays it...which is funny because YES and The Moody Blues were my top favorites..back in the day. Nowdays, this track would seem too commercial. But, could hear more Yes on RP just something more obscure.
|
Soundgarden - Fell On Black Days (Sep 08, 2008 - 14:08) | RP, I wish you would play more tunes like this......today you have been playing some great stuff.....unlike some when I have to suffer through the country-folk stuff.

Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata (Aug 20, 2008 - 14:32) | Beautiful but....I've had my lunch, it's mid-afternoon and after that last set, I am ready for a nap with this! Maybe on a different rotation?

Eliza Gilkyson - Is It Like Today (Aug 15, 2008 - 09:50) | Oh, here we go again...first song I hear today on RP just happens to be this one! WTF? I've been an Eliza Fan since "Pilgrim", and yes this is song is overplayed but also this isn't the only song in her catalog. COME ON!!
|
Coldplay - Lost? (Aug 12, 2008 - 08:34) | Right now the only difference between me and Coldplay is that they can take a bunch of lyrics that probably every other person has gone through, write a song from it and make millions from it. I can go through the same thing, write the same thing and get nothing but evicted, depressed and lonely. I wonder where they think this is going? I use to really like this group.

Emory Joseph - Tennessee Jed (Aug 07, 2008 - 15:56) | For what he does it's fine, and I am thrilled that you value him enough as a friend to play his stuff. That said, this style of music is just not for me at all.

If that's the standard, then fully half or more of the playlist here must drive you positively bats, because it's all played on any radio station anywhere. Especially a handful of currently popular acts who are in a very heavy rotation here and on every 'modern rock' and 'alternative' station in the world.
This one deserves an 8 if for no other reason than historical significance.
I'll give you that 8 for historical significance, but I guess I hold RP in a higher standard and listen to RP to not hear too much commercial slop.....I think they have been slipping a bit lately. I've been hearing way more commercial stuff on RP these days whereas before I would go "wow, I have never heard that before".
|
Bruce Springsteen - Jungleland (Aug 07, 2008 - 10:53) | Hate it Hate it Hate it Hate it. If I want to hear stuff like this I can turn on ANY radio station ANYWHERE.
|
Sam Phillips - No Explanations (Aug 07, 2008 - 09:44) | So far from what I have heard Sam Phillips has really missed the boat with this album. Don't even like the tired sounds of both songs I have heard so far. I agree, maybe a better producer?
|
Toots & The Maytals - Pressure Drop (w/ Eric Clapton) (Aug 04, 2008 - 14:33) | If your going to play Toots & The Maytals, since you've overplayed this song to death, can you please pick something else from the album?? Pleezzzzz, lest I keel over and die from this play it again sam rountine!
|
Gigi - Guramayle (Aug 04, 2008 - 09:44) | I heard this from a far and thought...is there something wrong with this record? It's skipping or something...then I realized. Thankfully this is not one of the Putamayo songs I have had to endure over the years. Ever listened to the children's one? Three little monkeys swinging in a tree? Pla-eeeeze shoot me now!

Joni Mitchell - Harry's House / Centerpiece (Jul 28, 2008 - 14:03) | Bravo on that comment! I totally agree. Sheryl Crow lyrics and style-no comparison!
jedley wrote:
Hearing this now, I'm even more indignant than before when a fellow listener compared Sheryl Crow to the supreme Ms. Mitchell. That's like comparing Coldplay to Radiohead, another favorite juxtaposition of people who were apparently born with neither ears nor sense. When are folks gonna learn the difference between what they LIKE and what's actually GOOD?
|
Eric Clapton - After Midnight (Jul 28, 2008 - 10:28) | While I loved this album at the time and played it to death....this is the last song I want to hear from it! Come on RP....the hits? This goes along with the Brewer & Shipley heard a few plays earlier.
Not good.....not good at all.

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here (Jul 21, 2008 - 14:32) | As much as I love this song, following the upbeat Viva La Vida by Coldplay, with this slow and coaxing Floyd melody....well....er, NO!! Then of course throwing in Don't Give Up by Peter Gabriel. Well it's the mute button now!
